  • CrowdShake, the App that could save lives
to these minor quakes borderline complacent that if and when the big one did strike say in the middle of the night you d think nothing of it Instead you d just roll over in bed ignore the customary feeling and risk being a goner But what if you had your own way of detecting an earthquake before it struck perhaps your very own early warning device that could raise the alarm and tell you that it s more than just a knee wobbler Early Warning Systems The only problem is these early warning systems are an expensive piece of equipment They rely on sensors lots of them which are spread out across a region When an earthquake begins the closest sensor picks up the tremor it gets relied to a processing center where the intensity of the quake is measured and the time it will take for the quake to reach other areas Now correct me if I m wrong but I imagine these systems to take up a vast amount of space So unless Walmart is secretly developing their own Value range of these systems or IKEA is developing a version you can build yourself then you re not likely to find a home version on the shelves anytime soon However having said that a team from the California Institute of Technology or Caltech to you and I might have the answer CrowdShake App Richard Guy Caltech s Community Seismic Network manager along with graduate Matt Faulkner head a team that have created a mobile App that can be used for alerting you to the threat of earthquake The CrowdShake App uses the accelerometer in your smartphone the part of the smartphone s brain that adapts the orientation when the device is changed from vertical to horizontal and vice versa and turns it into a simple seismometer Hmm Explain Essentially CrowdShake employs the same principles as any early warning system The accelerometer in your smartphone senses the movement This information is then analyzed and pushed back to the user Your smartphone then receives the data and knows when and where the tremor was originally felt By using your phones GPS along with the current time it can then calculate how long it will take to reach your location and how intense the quake will be The calculation itself takes just milliseconds to perform and sends out an alert telling you to either relax you re safe or you have literally seconds to get out of there Clear as mud Hmm I ll let the team at Caltech explain further However one of the problems facing the makers of CrowdShake is that the accelerometer in your smartphone isn t powerful enough or of good enough quality to produce reliable data on it s own Therefore in order for CrowdShake to produce accurate information a community of users will be needed If there are just enough phones that are stationary which could be a very small percentage from that we

  • LG’s G2 has buttons on the back!
seok Park LG s president and CEO said as he introduced the G2 on Wednesday Then again I suppose that s what I d say if I decided to revolutionize the way my company designed smartphones namely by placing all the buttons such as volume and quick action buttons for the camera on the back of the phone I am yet to hold the G2 but after so many years of getting used to buttons on the side of devices it just wouldn t feel right And I m sure you might agree Personally I have enormous hands so I struggle at the best of times using side buttons on most mobile devices However out of curiosity just to try and see what it might feel like I held my phone and pretended there were buttons on the back And boy it feels weird Perhaps this is because my giant hands were mimicking functionality that should be used on a 5 2 inch device not my lame 4 2 inch by 2 2 inch phone That s right I said phone as in the non smartphone variety But regardless of my pretense I think because our brains and hands are hard wired to now accept devices designed in a certain way that any form of change to the norm would just be wrong Answer Me Now for all my clear grievance with the whole buttons on the back thing LG has definitely spent some time tweaking and improving the user experience and created their Answer Me functionality To make the answering of a phone call more convenient for the user when you raise the phone to your ear it answers the call without pushing a button One reviewer describes Answer Me as especially useful if you re wearing gloves Now

  • Meet Limbo, the transformable smartphone
there s probably a bunch of stuff I ve missed out too You d think we d be contempt with this but nope we need more stuff to sync charge and weigh us down At the start of the year Jeabyun Yeon a designer from the country that brought us LG Samsung and Psy showcased his concept for a bendable smartphone the Limbo that could transform itself into a watch Now the world is currently alight with the idea of the SmartWatch a trimmed down version of a smartphone in watch format but the Limbo would serve both purposes It would have all the functionality of a smartphone and then if and when you felt like sticking your smartphone on your wrist you d attach it to the accompanying wrist cradle or credle and I don t know go for a jog I ll be honest I m on the fence with this idea Don t get me wrong I think the technology behind it is great but I haven t worn a watch in a long time I think I was 14 when I last wore one And I have a feeling it ll be a little bulky a 4 3 inch display hanging off your arm But that s not to say people won t buy it Samsung is reportedly working on a similar idea producing displays from flexible plastics instead of glass and Apple posted a Display Specialist job which to some means that they MUST be working on this idea too What s your opinion Kudos for the idea but would you actually buy one This entry was posted in Web News and tagged limbo smartwatch Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Click here to

  • Has social media overpowered the way we view TV?
to state that these services put more power in the hands of the consumer Indeed but this power means we re able to influence the outcome and future of a TV show In times gone by we would persevere with a TV show because you wanted to give it a chance I know I m guilty of wasting my time with certain TV shows so see what might happen but then regret the time I just wasted Now as a whole we don t have the patience to watch something that is utter garbage And if it is garbage we take to social media to vent our grievances meaning there s no need to wait for the critic s review the next day And by the morning there s enough traction to see that TV show pulled An example of such an event happened just recently in the UK A much anticipated TV show by comedy writer Ben Elton BlackAdder The Young Ones Mr Bean was cancelled According to most of the general viewership it was poor but more importantly it s cancellation is being blamed in part to an overwhelmingly negative reaction on Twitter According to newly released figures that somewhat are confirming are how much influence social media is having on the way TV is now judged state that up to 62 per cent of TV viewers use social media whilst watching TV This is now leading to a much sharper increase in the monitoring of online reactions even Virgin Media have created a Hotlist which is formula to assess social media engagement and reactions to TV shows I must admit I m not one of these 62 per cent but at times I feel like I should be The amount of crap that I see just rattles
