  • How fake images change our memory and behaviour
photograph surfaced of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney s children who each wore a shirt with one letter of their last name The children mistakenly lined up spelling out MONEY rather than ROMNEY Or at least that s what the picture will have you believe In reality the children lined up properly spelling their own last name and someone later simply switched the letters on the image But like a balloon ride or Bugs Bunny these fake images can have very real effects on memory In 2010 the online magazine Slate ran an experiment showing readers a handful of political photographs Some of them were of real events while others were doctored Readers were then asked whether or not they remembered those events happening Nearly half of Slate s readers claimed they remembered the fake political events happening And that s in an uncontrolled setting where they could have easily cheated and looked up the answers Many people are adamant that John Kerry and Jane Fonda protested together simply because they saw that photograph Seeing these fake images goes even beyond altering our memory of events It can actually change our behaviours too One study convinced people that egg salad had made them sick in their childhood Four months later those participants were less likely to want to eat egg salad even though the memory that made them feel that way was entirely false Another study showed participants images of two different protests some from the 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square others from 2003 anti war protests in Rome The researchers doctored some of the images to make the protests more crowded and violent than they really were When asked about the events later not only did the participants remember the protests being violent but they also expressed more hesitance to attend a protest in the future And when asked for comments about the events people wrote about conflicts damage to property and injuries from the police and participants that were never documented at the time of the event Whether or not these sorts of false images could radically change someone s mind on political issues has yet to be proven says Steven Frenda a memory researcher from the University of California in Irvine who has a forthcoming paper examining the results of the Slate survey But he thinks yet is the operative word I believe it probably is true he says but we don t have the evidence to say that Researchers are still pushing the limits of just how far they can go with doctored photographs Frenda says and they re planning some experiments to assess whether long held political beliefs can be swayed by faked imagery Why we re fooled Images are really good at fooling our memories for a number of reasons Wade says A big part of it is because people trust photographs We still think of them as frozen moments in time she says even though most people know that photographs can be and

  • Email tells feds to make sequester as painful as promised
few accounts Ms Noem told Mr Vilsack that the email made it sound like the administration was sacrificing flexibility in order to justify its earlier dire predictions I m hopeful that isn t an agenda that s been put forward the congresswoman told Mr Vilsack Late Tuesday evening the Agriculture Department issued a statement disputing Mr Brown s read of the situation The department said Mr Brown had suggested dividing his region s cuts among a number of states but he was told that idea was already part of their sequester plans The APHIS budget officer explained that USDA is already proposing these steps in order to avoid furloughs USDA is committed to doing all we can to minimize the impact of sequester for our employees and the farmers ranchers and rural communities we serve the department said in its statement The 85 billion in automatic spending cuts began Friday leaving the White House with tough decisions to make though it argues its hands are tied by the way the cuts were written into law That s left the administration trying to balance dire predictions with good management Last week immigration officials confirmed they were releasing immigrants awaiting deportation from their detention centers in order to save money and this week top officials said they were already seeing long lines at airports because of cuts in screenings But those decisions are being scrutinized as agencies continue to advertise for job openings and spend on other priorities The White House had to fend off questions Tuesday about the Homeland Security Department s decision to sign a 50 million contract for new uniforms for airport screeners just days before the sequesters All sides in Washington agree there should be a way to lessen some of the impacts of the cuts The House

  • Jeb Bush: I won't rule out 2016 White House run 'but I won't declare today'
t happen he actually himself kind of stepped back on Friday and said it wasn t going to happen that way he said Bush said the impact of the sequestration was oversold and people are just numbed by this dysfunction and they watch it with their peripheral vision Bush also said recent fiscal problems are hampering progress on immigration reform an issue he believes could help restore the nation s economic growth It s also the one of the few areas where both parties have shown considerable compromise This is the one place where cats and dogs seem to be getting along a little more so I m optimistic that there could be a consensus about going forward on immigration said Bush who addresses the issue in his new book Immigration Wars Bush faulted both the Republican party and its 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney for failing to garner more support from Hispanic voters during the last election cycle Gov Romney put himself in a box I think in the primary by trying to out conservative conservatives some very good conservative candidates and never really recovered from it Bush said Immigration may not be the dominant issue for Asian Amerians Hispanics and other minorities Bush added but Republicans need to recognize that it is important to them It s a gateway If you set a tone that you don t want people to be part of your team they don t join he said While Bush supports an immigration policy that would grant legal status to people who enter the country illegally if certain conditions are met he does not support granting them citizenship There has to be some difference between people who come here legally and illegally It s just a matter of common sense and a matter of

  • How the Insurer Knows You Just Stocked Up on Ice Cream and Beer
Some diabetic AT T employees also use mobile monitors in September AT T also started selling to employers its blood pressure cuffs and other devices to track wearers 24 7 But companies also have started scrutinizing employees other behavior more discreetly Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina recently began buying spending data on more than 3 million people in its employer group plans If someone say purchases plus size clothing the health plan could flag him for potential obesity and then call or send mailings offering weight loss solutions Marketing firms have sold this data to retailers and credit card companies for years and health plans have recently discovered they can use it to augment claims data Everybody is using these databases to sell you stuff says Daryl Wansink director of health economics for the Blue Cross unit We happen to be trying to sell you something that can get you healthier Some critics worry that the methods cross the line between protective and invasive and could lead to job discrimination It s a slippery slope deal says Dr Deborah Peel founder of Patient Privacy Rights which advocates for medical data confidentiality She worries employers could conceivably make other conclusions about people who load up the cart with butter and sugar Analytics firms and health insurers say they obey medical privacy regulations and employers never see the staff s personal health profiles but only an aggregate picture of their health needs and expected costs And if the targeted approach feels too intrusive employees can ask to be placed on the wellness program s do not call list For their part companies say tracking employees medical data saves money because they use it to make people healthier and sometimes reward them in other ways too Johnson Johnson JNJ 0

  • Landmark study warns gender bending chemicals in your home, food and car ARE linked to a huge range of diseases
said there was only weak evidence that gender bending chemicals were harming human health Declaring the chemicals a global threat the new report s authors said humans and animals were exposed to hundreds of compounds many of which have yet to be identified or properly studied Some are inhaled in dust others make their way into our bodies from food or simply licking our fingers The WHO stops short of saying the chemicals actually caused the illnesses but did say that in some cases the evidence was very strong The report State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals is the most comprehensive of its kind because rather than focusing on one chemical or one illness it evaluates all the evidence It says The diverse systems affected by endocrine disrupting chemicals likely include all hormonal systems and range from those controlling development and function of reproductive organs to the tissues and organs regulating metabolism and satiety Effects on these systems can lead to obesity infertility or reduced fertility learning and memory difficulties adult onset diabetes or cardiovascular disease as well as a variety of other diseases Worryingly it warns the chemicals assessed so far by scientists may only be the tip of the iceberg and there could be many other potentially harmful compounds out there It cautions that the key role of hormones in the development of tissues and organs means that unborn babies and young children may be particularly vulnerable The report written over two years by international experts who collated and weighted scientific studies on the topic also states the rise in some conditions is too rapid to be blamed on genes alone The prevalence of paediatric asthma has more than doubled over the past 20 years and is now the leading cause of child hospitalisations and school
