  • Kissinger resigns as head of 9/11 commission
White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card Friday afternoon to talk about his withdrawal from the position The official would not say if the call was expected but aides said the president was surprised by Kissinger s decision In his letter Kissinger said he was prepared to submit all relevant financial information to the White House and an independent review as well as to other members of the joint commission It has become clear however that although specific potential conflicts can be resolved in this manner the controversy would quickly move to the consulting firm I have built and own Kissinger s letter said To liquidate Kissinger Associates cannot be accomplished without significantly delaying the beginning of the joint commission s work he added I have therefore concluded that I cannot accept the responsibility you have proposed The concern is the questions of conflict of interest that may be raised because the former secretary of state serves on the boards of several organizations and is chairman of some of them Kissinger was national security adviser and later secretary of state under President Nixon After Nixon s resignation in 1974 Kissinger continued as secretary of state under President Ford President Bush in a brief statement said he accepted Kissinger s decision with regret As I stated at the time of his appointment Dr Kissinger is one of our nation s most accomplished and respected public servants I thank him for his willingness to consider serving this country once again the president s statement said Bush promised he would select a new chairman for the commission soon Kissinger s appointment was criticized by some who said he was too close to powerful national and international figures to be independent In an editorial published November 29 The New York Times suggested the White

  • Richard Nixon's scorn for Jews, blacks, Irish and Italians revealed in new tapes
aggressive and abrasive and obnoxious personality Another time he named several top Jewish advisers including Henry Kissinger his legendary national security adviser and argued that they felt a need to compensate for an inferiority complex What it is is it s the insecurity he said It s the latent insecurity Most Jewish people are insecure And that s why they have to prove things The remarks were recorded by the secret taping system that was installed in the White House at Mr Nixon s orders and provided key evidence in his downfall over the Watergate scandal a year later As the WikiLeaks cablegate affair throws the spotlight the inner workings of recent US diplomacy the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum has released 265 hours of tape as well as the notes and documents The paperwork reveals that Mr Nixon s concerns about Jews spread to Mr Kissinger as he ordered all Jewish Americans be excluded from work on the Middle East Get K out of the play he said according to notes taken by chief of staff HR Haldeman in 1971 No Jew can handle the Israeli thing In a separate recording he and Mr Kissinger made bluntly clear that they had no interest in helping Jews escape persecution in the Soviet Union or immigrate to America The emigration of Jews from the Soviet Union is not an objective of American foreign policy Mr Kissinger said And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union it is not an American concern Maybe a humanitarian concern I know Nixon responded We can t blow up the world because of it The New York Times also reported that the president strongly hinted that his reluctance to consider amnesty for young Americans who went to Canada to avoid being drafted

  • Rothschild and Freshfields founders had links to slavery, papers reveal
the 1830s It was the biggest bail out of an industry as a percentage of annual government expenditure dwarfing last year s rescue of the banking sector The chief archivist of the Rothschild family papers Melanie Aspey reacted with disbelief when first told of the contents of the records saying she had never seen such links before Niall Ferguson Laurence A Tisch professor of history at Harvard and author ofThe World s Banker A History of the House of Rothschild said the documents showed how pervasive slavery was in the structure of British wealth in 1830 In Mr Freshfield s case the records reveal that he and his sons had several slave owner clients mostly based in the Caribbean The lawyers acted as trustees of the owners estates and in one case tried to claim unpaid legal fees for the firm through the government scheme set up to compensate owners after abolition Nick Draper a University College London academic who examined the documents which will now form the basis of a comprehensive British slavery database at UCL said the records would hopefully promote a better understanding of of the significance of slavery in Britain We need to fill the gaps between those who deny slavery s role and those who believe Britain was built entirely on the blood of slaves he said Both Rothschild the bank and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer were quick to point to their predecessors anti slavery credentials Rothschild said Nathan Mayer Rothschild had been a prominent civil liberties campaigner with many like minded associates and against this background these allegations appear inconsistent and misrepresent the ethos of the man and his business Freshfields said James William Freshfield was an active member of the Church Missionary Society which was committed to the abolition of the slave trade Apologies
