  • IBM calls for global identity management solution
in ID cards border controls and other areas Beyond different governments trying to create a mosaic for what they want as good identity management wider international cooperation is needed to establish a common language and standards said Cal Slemp vice president and global leader for security and privacy services at IBM Global Services The common language for exchanging user access information is also known as federated IAM Governments have a huge part to play in this because they have ultimate responsibility for their citizens and depending on the country they may have ultimate responsibility for the businesses and e commerce as well Slemp said But current efforts are piecemeal and much more can be done to exploit the potential of the federated environment added Slemp During a medical emergency for instance the identities of a foreign doctor and a visiting patient need to be established quickly and accurately in order for the right healthcare to be administered What s missing right now he noted is a trusted third party to authenticate trustworthiness So we ve got inconsistent and incomplete implementation in individual countries and also no standard approach to the future nor a target to shoot at Slemp believes that

  • IBM Builds 'Bar Code Reader' for DNA
closer The DNA Transistor is a project from IBM Research that aims to advance personalized medicine by making it simpler and much cheaper to read an individual s unique DNA sequence the special combination of proteins that makes you unlike anyone else The technology isn t finished yet but its potential is tantalizin enough that IBM wanted to share it with the world And the company claims researchers are making progress Essentially a bar code reader for genes the DNA Transistor is part technique and part device It consists of a 3 nanometer wide hole known as a nanopore in a silicon microchip A sensor in the pore can read DNA and determine its unique makeup The challenge scientists face is controlling the rate at which a strand moves through that nanopore A DNA molecule needs to spend enough time in it for the sequencing to work By cycling voltages to the transistor s poles IBM aims to move the DNA through the nanopore at a consistent rate one nucleotide molecule of DNA at a time The company s researchers are currently investigating various housings for the pore as well honing the multilayer metal and dielectric nano structures to move

  • Australians refused insurance because of poor genes
Barlow Stewart said the research also showed consumers needed to be better informed about their rights Eighty five per cent of the people in the study didn t know where to go to seek assistance if they had been discriminated against she said Associate Professor Barlow Stewart and her colleagues surveyed more than 1000 people who had attended clinical genetic services about their experiences of discrimination In a long complex process that was only possible because of the assistance of organisations and companies that had carried out the discrimination the researchers were able to verify 11 cases of genetic discrimination and their results are published in the journal Genetics in Medicine Previous to this paper only anecdotal reports of genetic discrimination have been available with some commentators questioning whether or not the phenomenon actually existed Professor Barlow Stewart said In one case two women with the same genetic fault linked to breast cancer applied for income protection to the same insurer three years apart One was denied any type of cover while the other was offered insurance with an exclusion of breast cancer The different decisions were justified by the Insurance and Financial Services Association on the grounds of updated

  • Fury at DNA pioneer's theory: Africans are less intelligent than Westerners
wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so The furore echoes the controversy created in the 1990s by The Bell Curve a book co authored by the American political scientist Charles Murray which suggested differences in IQ were genetic and discussed the implications of a racial divide in intelligence The work was heavily criticised across the world in particular by leading scientists who described it as a work of scientific racism Dr Watson arrives in Britain today for a speaking tour to publicise his latest book Avoid Boring People Lessons from a Life in Science Among his first engagements is a speech to an audience at the Science Museum organised by the Dana Centre which held a discussion last night on the history of scientific racism Critics of Dr Watson said there should be a robust response to his views across the spheres of politics and science Keith Vaz the Labour chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee said It is sad to see a scientist of such achievement making such baseless unscientific and extremely offensive comments I am sure the scientific community will roundly reject what appear to be Dr Watson s personal prejudices These comments serve as a reminder of the attitudes which can still exists at the highest professional levels The American scientist earned a place in the history of great scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century when he worked at the University of Cambridge in the 1950s and 1960s and formed part of the team which discovered the structure of DNA He shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for medicine with his British colleague Francis Crick and New Zealand born Maurice Wilkins But despite serving for 50 years as a director of the Cold

genes or in this case an embryo with the desired physical traits such as blonde hair and blue eyes to continue the pregnancy and discard any others Dr Steinberg said couples might seek to use the clinic s services for both medical and cosmetic reasons For example a couple might want to have a baby with a darker complexion to help guard against a skin cancer if they already had a child who had developed a melanoma But others might just want a boy with blonde hair His clinic is offering this cosmetic selection to patients already having genetic screening for abnormal chromosome conditions in their embryos Not all patients will qualify for these tests and we make NO guarantees as to perfect prediction of things such as eye colour or hair colour says the clinic s website Dr Steinberg said I would not say this is a dangerous road It s an uncharted road He said the capability to offer such services had been around for years but had been ignored by the medical community It s time for everyone to pull their heads out of the sand Slippery slope But Dr Gillian Lockwood a UK fertility expert and member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists ethics committee questioned whether is was morally right to be using the science in this way If it gets to the point where we can decide which gene or combination of genes are responsible for blue eyes or blonde hair what are you going to do with all those other embryos that turn out like me to be ginger with green eyes She warned against turning babies into commodities that you buy off the shelf Josephine Quintavalle of Comment on Reproductive Ethics said This is the inevitable slippery slope of a

  • School defends experiment to separate black students in a bid to boost their academic results
strong same race role models led to better academic results Mr Jimenez admitted that no other students were divided by race at the school but he added that academic data dictated the school take a different approach with its black students He told Lancasteronline com One of the things we said when we did this was Let s look at the data let s not run from it Let s confront it and see what we can do about it The idea came from Angela Tilghman an instructional coach at McCaskey East She said statistics had shown about a third of McCaskey s African Americans scored proficient or advanced in reading on last year s Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests compared with 60 per cent of white students and 42 per cent of students overall In mathematics only 27 per cent of black students scored proficient or advanced She said research had shown that grouping black students by gender with a strong role model could boost both academic achievement and self esteem Some students staff and parents were against the segregation saying that it ran against everything the school stood for with students from diverse backgrounds But it was
