  • Sources: Wiretap Recorded Rep. Harman Promising to Intervene for AIPAC
defend the administration s warrantless wiretapping program which was about break in The New York Times and engulf the White House As for there being no evidence to support the FBI probe a source with first hand knowledge of the wiretaps called that bull I read those transcripts said the source who like other former national security officials familiar with the transcript discussed it only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of domestic NSA eavesdropping It s true added another former national security official who was briefed on the NSA intercepts involving Harman She was on there Such accounts go a long way toward explaining not only why Harman was denied the gavel of the House Intelligence Committee but failed to land a top job at the CIA or Homeland Security Department in the Obama administration Gonzales said through a spokesman that he would have no comment on the allegations in this story The identity of the suspected Israeli agent could not be determined with certainty and officials were extremely skittish about going beyond Harman s involvement to discuss other aspects of the NSA eavesdropping operation against Israeli targets which remain highly classified But according to the former officials familiar with the transcripts the alleged Israeli agent asked Harman if she could use any influence she had with Gonzales who became attorney general in 2005 to get the charges against the AIPAC officials reduced to lesser felonies Rosen had been charged with two counts of conspiring to communicate and commnicating national defense information to people not entitled to receive it Weissman was charged with conspiracy AIPAC dismissed the two in May 2005 about five months before the events here unfolded Harman responded that Gonzales would be a difficult task because he just follows White House orders but that she might be able to influence lesser officials according to an official who read the transcript Justice Department attorneys in the intelligence and public corruption units who read the transcripts decided that Harman had committed a completed crime a legal term meaning that there was evidence that she had attempted to complete it three former officials said And they were prepared to open a case on her which would include electronic surveillance approved by the so called FISA Court the secret panel established by the 1979 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to hear government wiretap requests First however they needed the certification of top intelligence officials that Harman s wiretapped conversations justified a national security investigation Then CIA Director Porter J Goss reviewed the Harman transcript and signed off on the Justice Department s FISA application He also decided that under a protocol involving the separation of powers it was time to notify then House Speaker J Dennis Hastert R Ill and Minority Leader Pelosi of the FBI s impending national security investigation of a member of Congress to wit Harman Goss a former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee deemed the matter particularly urgent because of Harman s rank as

  • The war game
than did Iran Quite simply said Iran expert James Bill the US views Iran through spectacles manufactured in Israel Impressing on the US the gravity of the Iranian threat has long been a foremost Israeli preoccupation By the early 1990s the former Minister Moshe Sneh was warning that Israel cannot possibly put up with a nuclear bomb in Iranian hands That could and should be collectively prevented he said since Iran threatens the interests of all rational states in the Middle East However If the Western states don t do their duty Israel will find itself forced to act alone and will accomplish its task by any ie including nuclear means The hint of anti American blackmail in that remark was nothing exceptional it has always been a leitmotif of Israeli discourse on the subject The showdown with Iraq has only encouraged this kind of thinking Within two years said John Pike director of Globalsecurity org either the US or Israelis are going to attack Iran s nuclear sites or acquiesce in Iran being a nuclear state To where this Israeli American neo conservative blueprint for the Middle East will lead is impossible to forecast What can be said for sure is that it could easily turn out to be as calamitous in its consequences for the region America and Israel as it is preposterously partisan in motivation fantastically ambitious in design and terribly risky in practice Even if to begin with it achieves what by its authors estimate is an outward short term measure of success it will not end the violence in the Middle East Far more likely is that in the medium or the long term it will make it very much worse For the violence truly to end its roots must be eradicated too and the noxious soil that feeds them cleansed It is late but perhaps not too late for that to happen The historic and historically generous compromise offer which Yasser Arafat back in 1988 first put forward for the sharing of Palestine between its indigenous people and the Zionists who drove most of them out still officially stands It is completely obvious by now that without external persuasion Israel will never accept it that the persuasion can only come from Israel s last real friend in the world the US that for the persuasion to work there has to be reform or regime change in Israel quite as far reaching as any to be wrought on the other side Given the partisanship it is admittedly highly unlikely to happen any time soon But if it doesn t happen in the reasonably foreseeable future there may come a time when it can no longer happen at all The Palestinian leadership may withdraw its offer having concluded like many of its people already have that however conciliatory it becomes whatever fresh concessions it makes it will never be enough for an adversary that seems to want all The Hamas rejectionists and or those secular as

  • The New Israel Lobby
about 30 Ben Ami speaks for and to this post Holocaust generation They re all intermarried he says They re all doing Buddhist seders They are he adds baffled by the notion of Israel as the place you can always count on when they come to get you Living in a world of blogs they re similarly skeptical of the premise that we re still on too shaky ground to permit public disagreement There s a curious and striking analogy with the situation of Cuban Americans whose politics until quite recently were dominated by the generation that fled Castro s revolution and were grimly determined to see his regime overthrown Obama has not had to pay a price for moderating the American embargo as his predecessors would have because Cuban American opinion is no longer in thrall to the older generation precisely J Street s goal in regard to the Middle East Street PAC sent out a questionnaire to Congressional candidates in the summer of 2008 seeking their views on U S engagement with the Middle East The group ultimately decided to support 41 candidates most of them non Jewish and raised 580 000 in barely six months A lot of the money came in small donations over the Internet another sign of the organization s new generation status And the money has continued to flow This past June several Jewish leaders were quoted in Politico as being disappointed in Donna Edwards an African American freshman legislator from suburban Maryland whom J Street had endorsed last year Edwards voted merely present on a resolution supporting Israel s assault on Gaza and she criticized Israel s settlement policy during a visit to the region Edwards s supporters feared she could face a primary challenge from a more pro Israel candidate As soon as the Politico item appeared Ben Ami fired off a fund raising appeal to the J Street netroots This is exactly how for decades established pro Israel groups have enforced right wing message discipline on Israel in Congress he wrote But not this time and not to our friend Donna Edwards Edwards who says that her own views place her right where the administration is on Israel Palestine issues attracted 30 000 via J Street PAC s appeal in three or four days That made people in Washington take notice It also infuriated some established leaders One of them told me that any group that would raise money for the likes of Edwards is not a responsible Jewish organization On the fundamental questions of Middle East peace J Street occupies fairly traditional liberal territory which of course places it well to the left of the mainstream groups According to its statement of principles the group favors creation of a viable Palestinian state as part of a negotiated two state solution based on the 1967 borders with agreed reciprocal land swaps the formula envisioned by the Clinton administration in its 2000 negotiations with Yasir Arafat and Ehud Barak Ben Ami says he also favors Jerusalem as the shared capital of the two states On the question of talks with Hamas classed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union J Street takes the cautious view that while we should not speak directly with officials we should engage through intermediaries with the goal of finding interlocutors willing to live in peace with Israel J Street maintains that most American Jews share its views on the Middle East They are reliably liberal on questions of war and peace three quarters of Jewish respondents to a 2007 Gallup poll for example opposed the war in Iraq The question is how much of an exception they make for Israel J Street sought to answer this question by commissioning an extensive poll of Jewish opinion on Middle East issues The survey taken in July 2008 and repeated with almost identical findings in March found that American Jews opposed further Israeli settlements 60 percent to 40 percent that they overwhelmingly supported the proposition that the U S should be actively engaged in the peace process even if that entailed publicly stating its disagreements with both the Israelis and the Arabs and that they strongly supported doing so even when the premise was revised to publicly stating its disagreements with Israel Strikingly the average respondent placed Israel eighth among a list of concerns only 8 percent placed it first or second J Street specializes in mounting campaigns that may appeal to the 92 percent who care about other causes more than they do about Israel Last September the organization asked supporters to sign a petition demanding that sponsors revoke an invitation to Sarah Palin to speak at an otherwise nonpartisan rally on Iran J Street says that more than 25 000 people signed it in 24 hours The invitation was revoked though Malcolm Hoenlein who helped organize the event says J Street had nothing to do with it J Street generated a similar response when it sent out a bulletin warning of legislation that could result in a blockade of Iran which critics argued could have led to war Ben Ami also posted links to John Hagee s more outrageous statements as a reminder of the kind of company the mainstream organizations were keeping The most controversial and significant of J Street s campaigns was the one most directly tied to Israel s security When Israeli fighter planes first hit Gaza on Dec 27 J Street issued a press release stating that there is no military solution to what is fundamentally a political conflict and calling for immediate strong diplomatic intervention to negotiate a resumption of the cease fire The next day in a message to supporters J Street s campaigns director Isaac Luria wrote that while there is nothing right in raining rockets on Israeli families or dispatching suicide bombers there is nothing right in punishing a million and a half already suffering Gazans for the actions of the extremists among them

  • Barack Obama: The first Jewish president?
Obama declined saying he was planning to go into politics When Obama graduated Mikva then a U S appeals court judge in Washington tried to lure him with a prestigious clerkship but Obama turned him down too That according to Mikva took some chutzpah Both Mikva and Minow say they sensed back then that Obama was something special They made a point of staying in touch Obama s circle of Jewish patrons and advisers widened further in 1992 when he became involved in a voter registration drive that brought him into contact with Bettylu Saltzman a liberal activist and daughter of the late Philip Klutznick a former commerce secretary and shopping mall developer Saltzman says she knew from the moment she met Obama that he would someday be president She introduced him to David Axelrod who saw something similar Axelrod designed the strategy in which Obama first won the backing of white liberals and then reached out to blacks Jews made up a significant number of the first constituency As Jews got to know him they recognized a kindred spirit not someone who came down from Mars Mikva said Rabbi Arnold Wolf of KAM Isaiah Israel synagogue across the street from Obama s Chicago home was another early backer Like Mikva he sees what he called Obama s Jewish side Obama is from nowhere and everywhere just like the Jews He s black he s white he s American he s Asian he s African and so are we Wolf said Certainly Obama is comfortable with Jews especially Jews from Chicago Axelrod will remain at his side as senior adviser and Rep Rahm Emanuel will be White House chief of staff Billionaire Penny Pritzker who has known Obama since the mid 1990s and served as his campaign finance chairwoman was said to be under consideration for commerce secretary until she took herself out of the running But Jews haven t always been comfortable with him The once solid alliance between Jews and blacks that was forged during the civil rights movement has frayed in recent years During the primary campaign Sen Hillary Clinton was far more popular among Jewish voters many of whom were worried about Obama s close friendships with influential Palestinian thinkers including his former Hyde Park neighbor Rashid Khalidi now at Columbia University Mikva and Minow recall trying to help candidate Obama reassure skeptical Jewish audiences that he would be a genuine friend to Israel He was frustrated Mikva said And I remember I told him that it wouldn t matter if your name was Chaim Weizmann first president of Israel there are some Jews who won t vote for you no matter what you say because they are Republicans Obama jokingly asked if it would make a difference if he called himself Baruch Obama noting that the Swahili name Barack and the Hebrew Baruch derive from the same linguistic root Both mean blessing Throughout the presidential campaign Obama did and said what was necessary to court
