    that composer is immersed in and loves Julian Anderson pointed out that there are many economic impacts of residencies and that there does need to be a practical and innovative approach to the way composers interact with orchestras There is not he pointed out any way that the economy can sustain a model where every composer who writes an orchestral work receives a full workshop read through of the piece six months before the performance date The roundtable discussion featured from left to right Paul Hughes BBCSO composers Colin Matthews Helen Grime Matthew Kaner chair Julian Philips Julian Anderson Stephen Maddock CBSO and Paul Newland Paul Hughes emphasised the need for composers to continue challenging and pushing orchestras and listeners The discussion turned to the last year s BBCSO performance of Ferneyhough s La Terre est un homme and the ability of something like this to be successfully achieved in weeks that are particularly well prepared and planned for The question that remains of course is how often an orchestra can produce the sustained effort and focus that is desperately needed to create even an adequate performance of such difficult works A rather pointed and extremely borad question at the end pulled forcefully on the positive nature of the entire discussion asking If everything is being run so well and being done so well if things have improved so much in the past 20 30 years why is contemporary classical music held in lower esteem than it ever has before It was heartening to hear both orchestral managers speak clearly and passionately about their desire to keep trying to answer that question and to keep commissioning and producing contemporary music into the future The truth of course is that the answer to this question is at very best unclear and
