  • Getting it Right? 2013 – Julian Philips » aaronhollowaynahum.com
with little interaction between Julian and the conductor and even less with the orchestral players The performance was relatively successful but it quickly became clear to Philips that the orchestra had no plans to play the piece again We got to hear a few moments of Out of Light which was previously unknown to me The few short sections we heard were colourful and inviting The presentation of the piece felt rather more objective and detached than the urgency that marked the music we heard Philips description of the process as a sort of creative hit and run might have explained some of this dichotomy Mr Philips turned finally to the question of creative development and his feeling that the commissioner of the work should be intimately involved in the creation of the works they commission Julian clearly felt opera was a good example of this though he conceded there was a large difference between workshopping an opera with a few singers and a piano as opposed to a full orchestra He had though returned and re conceived large portions of Out of Light a few years after its premiere and had found a more engaged creative dialogue with the orchestra and conductor including feedback on form playability and poetic function far more fulfilling to his work Already a highly prolific composer of opera it is clear that Philips is a composer who is particularly nurtured by collaboration and creative feedback from the artists with whom he works His vision on a wholesome creative process is certainly an attractive if practically difficult one 1 Comment Blog Getting it Right Live Blog Tagged Julian Philips Out of Light One Response Feb 06 2013 Getting it Right 2013 Richard Causton aaronhollowaynahum com Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply Name required

  • Getting it Right? 2013 – Julian Anderson » aaronhollowaynahum.com
is the very high level of sight reading ability that is both necessitated by and factored in to the economics of UK orchestras Yet Anderson lamented many masterpieces remain economically difficult to mount for other reasons of complexity including extra players choreography of the orchestra and unfamiliarity of some notation Anderson eventually rounded on questions the current repertoire of UK orchestras What is the repertoire What is being played What is not being played And why A number of pieces including David Lumsdain s Mandala V 1991 Tristan Murail s recent piano concerto Le Désenchantement du Monde 2012 and James Dillon s Ignis Noster 1992 were presented as examples of fine compositions that have not been played or sometimes only very rarely played in England Anderson s ultimate question was what is happening to the orchestral music that is being composed If these and other masterworks are going into a sort of black hole of sorts then the question of why is an important and pressing one Anderson conceded that we can t play all music all the time yet argued that if we are those who cherish music we must cherish the gems of our recent past and that it is important to hear the pieces lives to do so Julian Anderson addresses the Getting it Right 2013 Conference in his keynote address Anderson concluded his remarks by turning to the ways he addressed these questions and problems while composing Fantasias 2009 His own understanding of the orchestra and the orchestra s audience has been heavily influenced by Elias Canetti s Crowds and Power Anderson paused on Canetti s illustration of the crowd as a rainforest a group with many different sections and subsections with highly varied rates of change within itself e g insects vs trees Anderson didn

  • Getting it Right? 2013 – Mark Anthony Turnage » aaronhollowaynahum.com
those players growing experience with his music Mark Anthony Turnage is interviewed by LSO Manager Kathryn McDowell The conversation also touched on the question of large orchestras and large orchestral pieces in the 21st Century I heard Turange speak earlier in the week as part of the LSO Soundhub Scheme and he emphasized in both that talk and today s interview that he has a deep affinity for the orchestra because of its power sensuousness and unique sound Kathryn McDowell promisingly also emphasized the importance of major commissions in the regular life of a 21st century orchestra Turnage had advice for composers to not to spend too much energy in sending in unsolicited scores orchestras receive far too many and even published works are hardly listened to but rather to try and build relationships with conductors because it really is the conductors who can go to an orchestra and suggest programming a composer or a specific piece The questions touched on many aspects perhaps most interesting was Turnage s practice stated practice of omitting those instruments that have become most important to him e g harp saxophone to force himself into new areas questions and solutions No Comments Blog Getting
