and white view of notation that doesn t hold up in practice Consider for example the proof that a score does not and cannot include information about timbre Merely to mark a given A in a score oboe can never yield some essential content that corresponds to an oboe sounding A as neither the note A nor the timbre ordinarily designated as oboe can be exhaustively determined Consequently timbre can never be in the score never be integrated with line within the score never as a distinction be surpassed negated yet maintained Of course the first part of this argument is partially correct Simply marking an A in the oboe line of a score is not an exhaustive notation of timbre Depending on which venue the A is played in on which country the oboe is made in and by which oboist it is played there will of course be a slightly different sound on that A But does it follow that because timbre cannot be exhaustively in a score it cannot be integrated into a score at all Even those without any previous experience would be able to distinguish between the 440Hz A of an oboe and that of a strikingly different instrument say a trumpet Even the closest relative of the oboe the bassoon will make a very different sound on this A In terms of notated frequency though all of these pitches are the same Therefor when the composer chooses to place that A on the oboe and not on the trumpet or bassoon or violin etc it is a choice integrated into the score that is as much or more about timbre as it is about pitch Many composers would take this argument further The A that exists around 440Hz on the oboe is also different from the A that exists at 880Hz an octave higher on the exact same instrument Is this then a choice that has more to do with pitch or timbre Indeed many composers would argue that all of their indications dynamic articulation orchestration are really indications of timbre Beyond this a composer can make a number of indications that are explicitly related to timbre Obvious examples include the string indications of sul pont and sul tasto Even on the oboe though one runs into music such as this from Denisov s Solo for oboe which relies entirely on notated changes in timbre Clarke speaks about the abyss that opens up between score and performance when one considers these questions and I do agree there is a distance between score and performance Where I disagree is on the length of that distance Is there really so great a distance from that notated A on the oboe line to the note we hear that the two are not essentially connected For the further point is that nothing in a score can be exhaustively communicated The pitch at which that oboe plays has changed through time and will likely change again in the future

of these artists Though I hadn t known either of them before the course I d had the opportunity to work with Natalie in the first week and throughout the course have been struck by her attention to detail constant consideration of the audience and her diligent work ethic Though the visible bulk of Natalie s work might be yet to come she was absolutely invaluable in subtly directing and clarifying Sasha and my thoughts and desires as we honed the idea and created the libretto and music Working with Sasha has been a particular pleasure I d quickly been drawn to the mystery and precision of her poems And all of real life out there Beyond the white snow the horizon the hare And the honour that he covets offending soul He can only give his pen and paper for Drawing pin men on a gallows of dark ink From Hare s Breadth in The Estate Sasha and I wrote the work very much as a team After a section of the libretto was completed we were able to gather at her home and listen to some musical ideas and enjoy a long walk to discuss the opera and generally enjoy the countryside and the company Much of the most important aspects of the collaboration were actually in these moments as I got to know Sasha I learned too about the characters she had created and put into this beautiful if difficult space I don t know for sure but I imagine that Sasha must walk a lot as her libretto carried an innate musical quality that made it effortless to set in the score We have a new house In time it will seem like a home The walls are bare and white There is light in every
