I m delighted to announce that I ve been selected as one of five composers writing new works for the New Dots spring concert at the Forge in May 2013 I ll be writing for the atea wind quintet and all the composers selected will be writing for some subset of wind quintet and piano The other composers selected were Michael Cutting Piers Tattersall Emma Ruth Richards and Yuko Ohara New Dots launches this month with a concert at the Forge on 20th November No Comments Blog Events News Performances Tagged Atea wind quintet composition Emma Ruth Richards Michael Cutting New Dots Piers Tattersall The Forge Wind Quintet Yuko Ohara Embedded Induction Day Yesterday was the first day of the Sound and Music 2012 13 Embedded Scheme with the BBC Symphony Orchestra The centrepiece of the scheme is an 12 commission for the orchestra with two workshops with the full orchestra in March and April before a final public performance at BBC Maida Vale Studios in November 2013 Our meetings yesterday included time with a wide array of BBCSO management including chief producer Ann McKay the marketing and education department and even one of the orchestral librarians who unsurprisingly recommended Elaine Gould s fantastic Behind Bars and also gave us the MOLA Music Preparation Guidelines for Orchestral Music The Embedded scheme promises an array of opportunities to interact with every area of the Orchestra s operations and will become a far bigger part of our compositional development than a single commission would be It was amazing in particular to hear how much learning work and audience engagement the BBCSO are involved in including an array of programs for families I m already planning on being at the free Nov 11th Family Orchestra Chorus day with my wife and am hoping that we ll find a number of ways to interact with the BBCSO audience throughout the year The commission itself will be for the full BBCSO triple winds brass three percussion harp and strings at 14 12 10 8 6 The afternoon rehearsal of Michael Zev Gordon s Bohortha immediately confirmed the BBCSO as a dynamic orchestra that sinks its teeth into contemporary music with intensity and confidence As an American I continue to be amazed at the level of detail English orchestras achieve even in their first reading and the evening rehearsal promised equally exciting performances of Shostakovich s 4th Symphony and Mahler s Rückert Lieder with the simply incredible Alice Coote Michael Zev Gordon discusses Bohortha with a BBCSO player during a break in rehearsal at Maida Vale s Studio 1 The day finished with composer Richard Causton who will act as a mentor to us throughout the coming year Richard gave us some foundational advice on composing for orchestra and in particular how to make best use of the workshops We will each have time with Richard to look at our scores discuss our ideas and he ll be at both the workshops and final performances as

players to mentorship to increasing the platform for your work Show that you are an artist in all that you do Be brave Be open Be demanding in a nice way Come to everything Respect your peers Don t be a jerk When applying for opportunities stop and think am I right for this Don t be generic or put in the same application for multiple calls especially with one organisation Remember institutions are really people It s a small world and we re all traveling down this path together Richard Whitelaw The opening panel on Opportunities for Composers Seminar 2 The Role of the Performer Panelists Peter Wiegold Clare Hammond Alice Barron Michael Thrift Kenneth Hesketh Interpretation is the same for contemporary music as it is for all classical music and the role is created by the inadequacies of notation It is rare and wonderful to find a kindred spirit either in a composer or in a performer and these relationships are vital to all we do There is a role for recordings to act as an object which allows for a performance practice to arise around a piece though the thrill is normally about the live performance The role of the performer and composer are only really separate their furthest outsets Kenneth Hesketh I am always looking for the best of 1 preprepared music 2 music realised in the rehearsal and 3 a degree of the unknown in live performance Peter Wiegold When you perform Beethoven there is 10 20 left for the performer to discover The excitement of a new work is that it s 80 or even 90 Michael Thrift Seminar 3 Writing Music to Order Panelists Christopher Cook Richard Blackford Tom Kane Jack White Writing music to order often requires that you don t think of what you are producing as art because it s not art it is a product Commercial music is extremely competitive Library music will provide some dabbling opportunities but making it in the film music world requires devotion If you want to make your living only writing music then you will have to achieve a balance between pursuing the music you want and realistically putting food on the table Personal note my own viewpoint on this is to pursue only the music I want while using other means such as teaching and part time work to supplement that income You don t use music Peter Wiegold Seminar 4 The Business of Composition Panelists Judith Serota Sally Cavender Faber Music Christopher Fox Sarah Osborn MPA A huge amount of the music being created today is really some form of regurgitation of music that has already been written The most important relationships a composer has in life should not be with publishers or administrators but with performers Performers are almost always the best advocates of a composer s work Publishing can be vilified but remember that it is 1 primarily a business and 2 really a devotion and desire of the people involved to do the very best they can for their composers Commissioning is really easy and it is not a huge part of a concert budget Approach people The size and shape of the piece you write is very important Too long is very problematic because nobody has time to rehearse it or perform it well THE INSTITUE OF COMPOSING DEBATE It was also my pleasure to take part in a public festival event debate on a panel chaired by Peter Wiegold and including Christopher Fox and Roxanna Panufnik asking What s it like to be a 21st Century Composer The Institute of Composing is doing a fantastic job of raising the level of debate surrounding new music this is in no small part down to Peter s ability and willingness to say or ask the penetrating and somewhat explosive question or comment which everybody is secretly wondering about as a discussion carries on We had a very lively discussion and next week Peter will be chairing a follow up debate asking What s next for Art Music and I could not more highly recommend it to all of my contemporaries in both the composition and performance worlds 1 Comment Blog Writing Tagged Alex Wilson Alice making photographs more compelling and asked what people thought similar advice might be for composers to make their music more compelling I was thankful for the thoughtful replies that came through Adrian Thomas highlighted the difference between photography and music which he suggested might be down to objectivity I m sensitive to Adrian s point though I m sure he d also agree that much of what makes a photograph compelling is also somewhat subjective I wonder if this isn t more fundamentally about the usually more abstract nature of music In photography we d probably be more likely to agree on whether a picture is good or not where the photograph is more literal in terms of realism There are also perhaps more logistical rules in photography which can more readily be analysed and applied to what we see e g the rule of thirds than a similar idea e g the golden section can be applied to what we hear While acknowledging this I do still think that there are many points of connection between the art of photography and musical composition I ve written before about applying Steve Simon s excellent book The Passionate Photographer to composition and I do think that there
