  • Small steps can reduce your risk of developing Type II diabetes - Atkins Blog | Atkins Low Carb Diet
carbs are converted into glucose which are absorbed into the bloodstream the pancreas releases insulin to shuttle this glucose which is an entirely natural process However when the body can t properly use the insulin it makes Type II diabetes can occur This type of diabetes occurs when the body s cells stop responding to insulin so the body produces more more of this hormone This is caused in part by foods which cause a spike in insulin and the constant intake of such foods These foods include sugar in the form of fizzy drinks sweets cakes and confectionary However sugar can be found in other forms as it s added to so many processed foods now from sauces to condiments to bread Even refined carbs such as those found in white products like rice and pasta cause this rapid insulin spike By constantly fuelling the body with such foods this can cause the insulin resistance which can lead to Type II diabetes The development of Type II diabetes can sometimes be partly attributed to genetics but behavioural and lifestyle factors play a major part too So how can you make lifestyle changes to prevent the development of type II diabetes Keep an optimal weight Being overweight can increase your chance of developing this disease so staying at a healthy weight is advisable By reducing refined and sugary carbs you can stabilise blood sugar levels and your body will be less likely to store excess as bodyfat Reduce your intake of bad carbs Cut down on sugary starchy carbs and 2 things will happen you will be more likely to burn fat as fuel rather than relying on a constant intake of carbohydrates and your body will be less likely to store excess bodyfat once your metabolism changes to a fat burning state White bread rice potatoes doughnuts and sugary breakfast cereals have a high glycaemic index and can lead to an increased risk of diabetes Cut out sugary drinks Sugary fizzy drinks have no nutritional value and even some fruit juices have the fibre taken out and sugar added in Drinking just one sugar sweetened drink a day may increase the risk of developing diabetes by 83 Not only do such drinks lead to weight gain but there s mounting evidence that such drinks contribute to inflammation high triglycerides decreased good HDL cholesterol and increased insulin resistance all of which are risk factors for diabetes Eat more fibre good carbs Don t cut carbs altogether make sure you get plenty of complex carbs in the form of fibrous vegetables Eating more fibre aids digestion keeps you feeling fuller and you get plenty of nutrients from the vegetables which don t cause big spikes in blood sugar Move more Aim to exercise daily if possible Working your muscles more often and making them work harder improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose This puts less stress on your insulin making cells Studies suggest that walking briskly for 30

with good carbs such as lots of green veg By reducing my carb intake my body breaks down fat stores as an alternative source of energy Atkins is not a quick fix diet it s a long term sustainable way of eating and to be successful you have to see it as a lifestyle I find it easy to maintain as I can enjoy a wide variety of foods and the high fat moderate protein combination keeps me feeling full so I don t feel deprived It s about finding healthy alternatives which Atkins low carb products help with too My husband and I love the Advantage Chocolate Decadence Bar and we ll have one for dessert if we fancy a sweet treat Atkins has become a way of life for me now I love my food and love what I eat I feel in control and constantly get people telling me how great I look There s no way I ll ever be going back to my old eating habits For as long as I could remember I d been big I wasn t one of those women who could say I remember when I was a size 12 because even as a teenager I d been overweight Sweet treats were my downfall if I bought a box of Celebrations I couldn t just have one or two the lot would be gone within two days I ignored my weight issues for a long time but in 2012 two factors combined which jolted me into action Firstly I was looking through some snaps from our holiday to Spain the previous year when I stumbled across a photo of myself sat with my daughter I was deeply embarrassed as I look at myself bursting out of my swimming costume so I just shoved them back into the drawer However not long after I was having a routine check up when my doctor told me my cholesterol level had hit 4 85 and was climbing He explained that a cholersterol level of 5 or above would leave me exposed to an increased risk of a heart attack and other coronary health issues Of course I was mortified by my appearance but I was more horrified by the idea that if I didn t slim down and bring my cholesterol under control I might not be around to see my daughter grow up My husband had tried Atkins and successfully lost weight in the past but I d always been sceptical about the safety of the diet Reluctantly I read his copy of the New Atkins New You book and to my surprise I found all of my pre conceptions of the diet were completely incorrect I d studied biochemistry at university and I was amazed by how the science behind the weight loss approach made complete sense Far from feeling hungry and deprived on Atkins I found myself enjoying a wider variety of foods than before including lots of colourful vegetables

It has been designed to replace bad refined and starchy carbohydrates with good carbs such as green fibrous vegetables and red berries By reducing the intake of carbohydrates the body breaks down fat stores as an alternative source of energy During my weight loss journey I ve been lucky enough to have had total support and encouragement from my wife which was a crucial element to keeping me motivated Atkins is a mind set in order to reap the rewards you do have to be fully committed which means no cheating Nothing in life comes easy and any diet must be taken seriously but this was relatively simple to do because of the wide range of Atkins products and meal plans which provide healthy alternatives to some of my favourite foods I rarely felt like I was struggling or that I was restricted by the diet Ever since childhood I ve really struggled with my weight and I was always picked on and called horrible names As the years went on my weight continued to escalate and although I tried a lot of different diets before long I would feel hungry restricted and miserable For that reason the weight wouldn t stay off for long I struggled to lose weight over the years even though I tried numerous well known diets and always gave them my best I just found myself calorie counting which I found to be very tiresome What really made me get serious about losing weight was when I had to visit the doctor because I was suffering from shortness of breath and I sweated a lot The doctor warned me that my blood pressure was very high and he advised me to change my diet and lose weight to make my life a lot easier I

to control my life After my diagnosis I went home and began looking into how I could gain back control and combat my diabetes This is when I came across a website called BloodSugar101 It recommended low carb eating and included testimonies from people for which this method had proved successful Willing to give anything a try I immediately cut my carbohydrate intake to just 20g Net Carbs a day which is recommended by the New Atkins nutritional approach As part of my research I also read a book entitled The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Jeff S Volek and Stephen D Phinney who co wrote the New Atkins New You book This explained to me the effects of carbohydrates on the body and the benefits of reducing their intake Fuelled by anger it wasn t difficult to change my eating habits so dramatically as I knew I was doing it to benefit my health and quality of life When I met with my diabetes nurse she too recommended a change in diet could help me control my condition However she advised that all of my meals should be based around carbohydrates Luckily I d read enough to convince me this was the appropriate approach for me The most difficult thing for me to give up was some of my favourite fruits apart from berries which I do still enjoy in small quantities Before being told I had diabetes I knew I was overweight but I didn t have what you would describe as a bad diet I ate lots of fruit and vegetables bread that I made from scratch fish pasta and the occasional cake as I am keen baker However after adopting the New Atkins style diet I realised just how damaging some of the food I d been consuming had been The weight started to drop off my energy levels soared and most importantly my blood sugar levels decreased significantly In four months it went from 6 8 mmol L to 6 2 mmol L My GP did not know I had adopted an Atkins style eating plan so when I went back to him in the March he was pleasantly surprised to see the improvements in my blood sugars purely from the change to my diet meaning he didn t have to prescribe medication Seeing the difference in my health as well as my appearance means I would never go back to eating carbohydrates If I ever accidentally eat carbs I instantly feel my cravings coming back so I can now see it was an addiction rather than an eating habit Today my diet is full of leafy greens meats oily fish vegetables and I feel better than ever I also always keep Atkins bars to hand in case I am out and about and can t find a low carb snack option my favourite is the Endulge Chocolate Coconut bar I don t feel in the least deprived in any way and
