    right to comment TBH I can t see that there are many men who look as weird as he does at his age and yet he feels the has the right to brand someone as beautiful and successful as Adele doubtless is with such derogatory and inflammatory comments My mum taught me that if you can t say something nice about someone then you should keep your mouth shut Losing weight is about the physical but behind all that there is a whole host of emotional baggage to a greater or lesser degree that has to be overcome and I think that is much more difficult 8 Posts Send PM Annina Reply 14 10 months 2 weeks ago Hi Ellen Thanks a lot for your detailed reply sorry it took me a while to get back to you I can definitely see what you mean with society s pressure to conform and the toll that takes on people who don t fit into the slim and fit body ideal So if I got it right in your opinion being overweight has two effects a physical effect on your health etc which is directly connected to your weight and an emotional effect on your self esteem etc which is not connected directly to your weight but to the way society responds to people who don t conform to the body ideal Consequently when you lose weight there will be direct physical improvements whereas the possible emotional improvements are only indirectly linked to weight loss and are much more difficult to achieve Does that capture it Please feel free to correct me if I got it wrong or if you d like to add something How would you say one can overcome this emotional baggage then Does it gradually go away naturally after weight loss or would one need to deal with it separately in its own right 13 983 Posts Send PM Ellen Reply 15 10 months 2 weeks ago That s pretty much it I d say The emotional thing varies I think from person to person For some people the renewed self esteem will strip away the emotional baggage for some having the control will do it for some it will be a number on the scales for some it will be what they see in the mirror for a lot its fragile in that any gain in weight can start a downwards spiral very easily A lot of seriously overweight people have carried this baggage for a lot of years It might have been ingrained by circumstances in their life bullying abuse difficult upbringing family ties marriage breakups and a myriad of other circumstances Where an alcoholic may look to a bottle and emotional eater will look to food A lot of the symptoms are the same As far as I can see although lots of people are well meaning the only person that can support is someone who has been in that situation and has experienced the
