    m Breedte 8 8 m Diepgang 3 6 m Zeiloppervlak 1200 m2 22 zeilen Waterverplaatsing 850 t Masthoogte 34 m Motor 2x500 HP nieuwe motoren Geschiedenis De Driemaster Bark Belem is de laatste 19 eeuwse Franse handelschip dat nog steeds zeilreizen maakt De Belem was gebouwd aan Chantenay sur Loire vlakbij Nantes en begon te zeilen in 1896 Als een koopvaardijschip heeft ze de Atlantische Oceaan 33 keer overgestoken tussen 1896 en 1913 In die dagen kon ze tot maximaal 650 ton van goederen en koopwaar transporteren vooral cacao uit Brazilie en rum en suiker uit de Franse Antillen De enige constructie gebouwd op het dek was de kombuis In 1914 werd de Belem verkocht aan de hertog van Westminster toen werd ze veranderd in een prive jacht gerenoveerd en voorzien van motoren Oorspronkelijk was de romp van de Belem zwart met een gouden rand In 1906 werd ze overgenomen door een nieuwe eigenaar Demange Freres die de romp grijs geverfd en versierd had met blinde kanon poorten Haar huidige look zwarte romp en witte geweerpoorten stamt uit de Westminster tijdperk net als de zeer karakteristieke balustrade rondom de quarterdeck De oorspronkelijke masten met uitzondering van de stalen boegspriet waren van hout gemaakt Tegenwoordig zijn alle masten van staal Het hoofddek huis was gebouwd in 1914 het kleine dek huis na 1921 de twee waren samengevoegd in de jaren 1960 Het stuurhuis op het achterdek is een recentere toevoeging gedateerd 1984 Echter de wijzigingen die de Belem in haar hele leven heeft meegemaakt eerst als een koopvaardijschip vervolgens als een jacht en tenslotte als een training schip hebben nooit haar fundamentele uiterlijk echt veranderd Ze ziet er vandaag de dag net zo uniek uit als ze er in haar verleden uitzag De keuze die de Belem Stichting heeft gemaakt toen zij het schip restaureerde in het begin van de jaren tachtig was om de wijzigingen in de achtereenvolgende periodes van haar uitzonderlijke carrià  re te respecteren De Belem heeft maar liefst vijf verschillende levens geleefd ze vloog drie verschillende vlaggen en ze blijft varen terwijl vele duizenden grotere luxere en nieuwere zeilschepen voor altijd zijn verdwenen Dit is het verhaal van een trouwe overlevende een schip geboren onder een gelukkig gesternte Belems meest memorabele ontsnapping uit zekere vernietiging en de dood van allen aan boord was in 1902 in St Pierre de la Martinique op 8 mei la Montagne Pelee de naburige vulkaan barstte spugend verbrandende aswolken die de stad en de schepen in de haven vernietigd hebben en 30 000 mensen in 90 seconden gedood hebben De Belem had de haven de dag ervoor bereikt maar als gevolg van een bureaucratische vergissing was haar havenplaats door een andere Franse schip bezet dus ze moest ankeren in een baai verderop langs de kust En zo overleefde ze ongeschonden het eilands ergste catastrofe English Nederlands Nieuws LAATSTE Log Kapitein Stad Amsterdam Richard Slootweg Everything has a last time A few months ago I started my last term on board the
