    Signup BRITISH FORMULA 1 LEGEND DAMON HILL OBE MAKES STAR APPEARANCE AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL 1 2 3 4 5 92 93 94 BRITISH FORMULA 1 LEGEND DAMON HILL OBE MAKES STAR APPEARANCE AT AUTOSPORT INTERNATIONAL 16 Jan 2016 Damon Hill OBE is the star of Autosport International this weekend where he is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his 1996 F1 World Championship win with thousands of fans at the NEC Hill who will be appearing at Autosport International today and Sunday 17th January opened the NEC event earlier this morning with Petter Solberg cutting the ribbon in front of many eager motorsport fans He was reunited with his Williams FW18 racing car on the Williams stand the same car that took him to his 1996 victory and one of the most successful F1 cars in history Hill will be appearing on the Autosport Stage over the course of Saturday and Sunday and will be taking part in several autograph signing sessions One of the most loved British racing drivers ever Hill got his first Formula 1 race seat with Brabham in 1992 but it is Williams with whom he is most associated and thanks to a unique Williams celebration feature Autosport International will be reuniting Hill with not only his championship winning car but also some key members of the Williams team too Having tested for Sir Frank Williams famous racing team in 1991 Hill was given a race seat in 1993 alongside Alain Prost before partnering Ayrton Senna in 1994 that fateful year in which the Brazilian lost his life at the San Marino Grand Prix Hill s battles with Michael Schumacher that same season are the stuff of legend most notably the infamous crash in Adelaide in which he was pipped to the title by just one point

    day of Autosport International has been a huge success with multiple launches insightful interviews and a wide range of features to entertain the crowds The Williams Martini Racing Motorhome proved to be a real crowd puller acting as the focal point for a major feature on the much loved British F1 team Positioned next to the revamped Autosport Stage it is the first time it has been constructed outside of a racing circuit and was surrounded by eight famous F1 cars from the team s history showing the great heritage of the iconic British team Meanwhile Susie Wolff and the Motor Sports Association launched Dare To Be Different The new initiative aims to inspire connect and celebrate women who work in every aspect of motorsport on and off track by building an online community and running a selection of free special events across the UK Susie said Autosport International is an event I always looked forward to coming to and there was no better place to launch our Dare To Be Different campaign Not only was the timing right but it s the one show that brings all avenues of motorsport together Our main aim is to drive female talent in all aspects of the sport boosting awareness with young girls and demonstrating the varied and exciting areas of the sport showing that they too can dare to be different Crowds surrounded the Autosport Stage throughout the day to hear anecdotes and insights from stars of the motorsport world Former World Rally Championship holder Ari Vatenen reminisced about his long career in the sport and discussed his son Max s campaign in the British Rally Championship this year alongside Elfyn Evans in an M Sport Ford Fiesta Three time FIA World Champion Petter Solberg enthralled crowds with his view on

    a stellar line up saw Saturday tickets sell out by early afternoon From the moment he cut the ribbon to open the show at 9am Damon Hill OBE drew huge crowds and was the major attraction at the Autosport Stage Talking to Henry Hope Frost he revealed his love of the Williams Renault FW18 the car in which he won the 1996 F1 World Championship The FW18 was designed for me I just felt so at home in it and had some of the most enjoyable qualifying laps I ve ever had in a racing car Hill said It was a very nimble car and had big power from the 3 0 litre V10 Aesthetically it just looked so right too Hill also recalled the FW14B the car that took Nigel Mansell to the 1992 F1 World Championship and a car that Hill extensively tested That was some car Big tyres big power from a 3 5 litre V10 and no power steering Both Williams cars have been on display for visitors to see at the Williams Martini Racing motorhome joined by six others from the F1 team s history The motorhome which has been constructed for the first time away from a racing circuit has formed part of a revamped Autosport Stage The stage also saw Williams Martini Racing Deputy team principal Claire Williams shed light on the behind the scenes workings of the beloved British team She shared her views on the future of the team expectations for the 2016 season and plans to take the fight to Mercedes She also talked about Williams Advanced Engineering the division of Williams which commercialises F1 bred tech and which supported Jaguar in the development of the C X75 as well as projects outside of the automotive arena as diverse as supermarket fridges Two drivers who pulled in the crowds on the Autosport Stage were Marino Franchitti and Andy Priaulx who will form part of the line up when Ford returns to Le Mans this year in the LM GTE Pro class with the all new GT Marking 50 years since the GT40 finished first second and third at the famous 24hr race the all new factory program will see Ford try to emulate some of that 1966 success I m massively excited to be a part of Ford racing coming back to Le Mans half a century after the original GT40 Marino Franchitti told Henry Hope Frost It s such a beautiful car and it drives even better than it looks Andy Priaulx added Ford s engineers have not compromised on this car at all It s built to win I can t wait to continue putting some testing miles on it Former Stigs Perry McCarthy and Ben Collins regaled visitors on separate occasions during the afternoon McCarthy discussing his career and exploits on Top Gear while Collins talked about racing game Project CARS and stunt work in Hollywood Over at the Coys auction there was a mouthwatering mix of

    Williams Martini Racing driver Felipe Massa was the highlight of another sell out day at Autosport International with the Brazilian drawing huge crowds to the Live Action Arena and Autosport Stage Driving an historic 1983 Williams Cosworth FW08C Massa put on a real spectacle in front of a packed Live Action Arena sliding the historic racing car out of corners and then burying the throttle on the straights The FW08C was provided by Williams Heritage and was campaigned in the 1983 F1 season by Keke Rosberg and Jacques Laffite It was also the first F1 car driven by legendary driver Ayrton Senna who begged Williams team founder Frank Williams for a test and got his chance at Donington in July of that year It was a real honour to drive the FW08C today especially as it was the first car Ayrton ever tested Massa told Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft in the Live Action Arena It s a great car to drive very easy to control very easy to go sideways The engine sounds fantastic Fresh from his drive Massa hot footed it to the Autosport Stage for an interview with Henry Hope Frost He spoke of his love for the Williams team It is a big honour to work for Sir Frank Williams and the rest of the team We have a great relationship it is like a family and talked of his best memory in F1 winning his home race the Brazilian Grand Prix back in 2006 Thanks to appearances from Massa and Damon Hill OBE along with a host of exclusive features including the construction of the Williams Martini Racing motorhome next to the Autosport Stage for the first time outside of a racing circuit this year s Autosport International has been a huge success with
