to remove impurities from raw sugar The bones used are not the byproducts of the meat packing industries but are from cattle that have died naturally in places like India Pakistan and Nigeria The principal use for such bone material is for gelatin production and charcoal manufacture is a by product of this industry In Scotland they are burned in an enclosed atmosphere at 1200º centigrade to create activated charcoal This bone charcoal is used to remove color impurities and certain naturally occurring minerals that could result in cloudiness when the sugar is dissolved The bone char is not in the sugar but is used only as a filter similar to a coffee filter Its use is a very common practice in sugar refining and is currently the best available Vegetable charcoal does not remove ash so sugar produced using this type of carbon as an alternative is likely to be of somewhat lower quality C H Sugar is looking for alternatives If a consumer finds the use of this bone charcoal objectionable an alternative would be a specialty sugar C H Hawaiian Washed Raw is processed in the Hawaiian Islands where lime calcium carbonate is used a s a clarifying agent rather than carbonized bone char It is then transported to our Mainland refinery where it is dried and packaged It should be available in markets that carry C H Sugar Regarding the nutritional value of C H Sugar our pure cane sugar is 100 sucrose it is pure carbohydrate no fat no cholesterol We do not add any fillers to our granulated or any of our other sugar products and the sugar is not bleached For your general information like all other carbohydrates sugar contains 4 calories per gram and one teaspoon contains 15 calories We are especially proud of our brown sugar as we do not need to add flavoring or coloring the molasses flavor is derived naturally from cane through crystallization As you can see this particular company uses animal products in the processing so it is not considered to be vegan There are several alternatives to using processed sugar They include raw sometimes called turbinado sugar beet sugar succanat date sugar fructose barley malt rice syrup corn syrup molasses and maple syrup Also any unprocessed cane sugar would be vegan The following are a couple of opinions on the issue of vegan purity from the Vegan Outreach website Some people feel that veganism should be an all or nothing proposition But this is a somewhat unrealistic attitude So don t pressure yourself to rid your life of every trace animal by product because it does not help animals in any major way to do so Our limited time and energy are better spent persuading people not to eat the legs of chickens or drink a glass of cow s milk As people cut out the primary products that contribute to animal suffering the meat dairy egg industries will fade and by products will disappear Veganism

  • Protests
If you haven t seen these documentaries you should In my experience the power of those films does not necessarily lie in the issues themselves which are powerful enough but rather in the stories of regular folks real people who miraculously woke up to the abuse that was happening around them to the cruelty they had somehow always missed This was reinforced last month while watching and interacting with the winners of this year s Genesis Awards which I ve been honored to help select for the last three years The annual awards show honors positive representation of animal issues in the mainstream media What occurred to me is many people possibly most have little problem with animal rights Of course we need to be more respectful to animals Duh Of course cruelty should not be tolerated No where people seem to diverge are on their views of animal rights activists A quick Google search of the phrase animal rights activist revealed this little beaut as the first link on UrbanDictionary com Hypocritical asshole who thinks that he she can stop the killings of poor innocent animals by harming humans and being a bitch until they get their way Ouch Moreover other definitions I discovered were even less flattering If this is in any way reflective of how the general public feels about animal rights and I suspect it is we re in trouble Shouldn t a primary goal of any social justice movement be to bring more people into the fold If otherwise sympathetic people reject what we re trying to promote because of how activists behave we ve failed miserably by any definition Protest makes sense when no one is aware of what you re peeved about and if people actually listen but perhaps by relying too much on protests we re missing out on even better ways to facilitate change Minds and hearts like parachutes work best when open And minds only open to controversial issues when people are introduced to them through those they like or at the very least respect We can ill afford to keep doing what we ve been doing because it makes us feel better Thankfully we don t have to Animal abuse is no longer a hidden horror Veggie fare is common in most supermarkets and popular films like Finding Nemo and Babe are readily available to rent or own on home video Is it time we talked less and listened more Is it time to move out of our turbulent adolescence to be less enraged and more engaged Is the Animal Rights movement ready to make the transition from one of protest to one that promotes Signs suggest it already is The Witness shows without a doubt how curbside screenings of video footage of fur bearing animals caught in traps can change minds without a single placard or voice being raised Washington DC s Compassion Over Killing among others have been sponsoring veggie outreach events and making converts one person

adopting a vegan diet is the best thing that you can do influencing others must come in a close second Click here for ideas for promoting veganism in your community So this is PETA s plea for patience and tolerance Please don t alienate would be vegans by examining the food in their cupboards or refrigerators Don t make veganism seem oh so difficult as though we spend all our time reading labels and demanding that restaurant servers go back and read the label on the bag of veggie burgers After all veganism is about joy and life and it should not be painted as drudgery PETA wants to show people that veganism is easy and mainstream because that s what is best for animals Sadly some people already perceive vegans as extreme radical and difficult Instead of squabbling about some almost nonexistent ingredient in public situations we should be positive and not pretend that even pure vegan food doesn t come with its quota of rat hairs allowed by law isn t processed using electricity that destroys habitat isn t delivered in gas fueled vehicles and so on Everything that we eat involves some degree of animal suffering our goal is to vigorously reduce that suffering Frankly some not quite vegan food is more vegan than the streets and tires we drive on the houses we live in the petroleum products we use and many other animal based products that we unwittingly consume on a daily basis Remember if you give a server in a restaurant the third degree or spend all your time with your parents telling them that this that or the other is not vegan on the basis of some infinitesimal ingredient that they ve never even heard of you ll inadvertently be transforming your noble
