    Implementation Strong Legislation You Can Help Make Manitoba Barrier Free Spread the Word Endorse the Call Subscribe Follow Us on Twitter Join Us on Facebook To increase decrease the font PC ctrl ctrl MAC command command We All Rocked It on December 3rd Dec 05 2015 The December 3rd International Day events in Manitoba were an extraordinary and empowering expression of full citizenship by Manitobans with disabilities An estimated 1 600 Manitobans literally jam packed the Legislative Building today to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and launch Disability Matters Vote 2016 Indeed it was an overflow crowd with some folks turned back at the front door including a few media staff Apologies to all who experienced communication and other barriers that limited their participation our plans for accommodations were overcome by the sheer size of the crowd An extraordinary turnout to be sure Sister events were also held throughout the province Brandon and Thompson for sure We are pleased to share a series of captioned videos of the event for those who were unable to attend or wish to re live the extraorindary event Disability Matters Vote 2016 Launch Video Part 1 Welcome Malinda Roberts Part 2

    MAC command command Barrier Free Launches Drive Thru Five Oct 26 2015 Barrier Free Manitoba has launched Drive Thru Five to ensure strong community advocacy throughout the critical first five years of implementation of the landmark Accessibility for Manitobans Act AMA that was passed in 2013 Two years have already passed and we need to step up our game for the three years that remain before 2018 This time frame is important because 2018 represents the half way point between the date the AMA came into force December 5 2013 and the 2023 date set by the act for achieving significant progress towards full accessibility All five of the first accessibility standards customer service employment information and communication transportation and the built environment should have been developed and brought into force by 2018 2018 extends two years beyond the upcoming Spring 2016 provincial election and the possible change in the political leadership responsible for implementing the AMA Providing for strong independent community capacity through to 2018 will ensure meaningful participation in the first comprehensive review of the effectiveness of the Act due to start by December 2017 As part of Drive Thru Five Barrier Free Manitoba is asking all those who worked so hard to secure the legislation to re commit by endorsing our call for its timely and effective implementation based on nine basic principles We are also asking all other Manitobans committed to disability and human rights to support our efforts toward making Manitoba a truly inclusive province It s easy Just complete the webform today at https www surveymonkey com r BFMandAMA Without strong and sustained community advocacy we are very concerned that the passage of the AMA will be but hollow victory won at tremendous cost The Customer Service Standard is just the first of five

    policies and practices to provide accessible customer services that are consistent with the AMA s four principles access equality universal design and systemic responsibility and The Human Rights Code Develop formal policies and practices to identify and remove existing barriers and prevent new barriers from being created Provide descriptions of these policies and practices upon request this only applies to organizations with more than 20 employees Ensure that there is a clear process to secure and respond to feedback on accessibility concerns Document actions taken to address accessibility concerns and make this document available on request Recognize that persons disabled by barriers have the right to be accompanied by a support person and or a service animal when accessing goods and services Communicate with persons disabled by barriers in a manner that takes the barrier into account Train all staff and volunteers who provide goods and services to the public on The Human Rights Code the AMA and the organization s accessibility policies and practices Can organizations charge extra for accessible services Only if the organization cannot reasonably accommodate the person otherwise This includes any additional charges for support persons We asked that any and all additional charges be prohibited but the standard s current restriction was seen to go as far as was possible while complying with The Human Rights Code What about the accessibility of public meetings All public sector organizations are required to ensure that Public meetings and events are held in accessible space Notice of public meetings and events is provided in an accessible format and indicate that relevant accessibility supports will be made available upon request The physical and communication needs of persons disabled by barriers are met upon request What is the deadline for organizations to comply with the standard All Manitoba government departments

    Barrier Free Spread the Word Endorse the Call Subscribe Follow Us on Twitter Join Us on Facebook To increase decrease the font PC ctrl ctrl MAC command command BFM Releases More Accessible Summary of Final Draft Regulation Apr 06 2015 Barrier Free Manitoba has now released an alternative and more accessible summary of the Consultation Draft of the proposed customer service standard regulation Word PDF The draft regulation released by the Minister Word PDF is presented in the style and format of an actual regulation This is an interesting choice On the positive side you see exactly what is being proposed As such it reads like a legal document and does not include the helpful explanations included in the earlier discussion papers This will mean that revisions can be made more easily and quickly before the Minister forwards an improved version of the regulation for Cabinet approval The negatives of the choice are the flip side of this It reads like a legal document This may be a delight for those who enjoy reading legislative documents cookbooks and dictionaries However for most members of the general public the document is thick with legalistic jargon It is also not organized in
