    for Ontarians with Disabilities Act AODA Other Resources Links Endorsers Effective Implementation Strong Legislation You Can Help Make Manitoba Barrier Free Spread the Word Endorse the Call Subscribe Follow Us on Twitter Join Us on Facebook To increase decrease the font PC ctrl ctrl MAC command command Disabled in Manitoba still waiting for democracy Feb 02 2016 Letter to the Editor in February 2 Edition of the Winnipeg Free Press As we celebrate 100 years since women in Manitoba won the right to vote and as we approach the provincial election we feel it s important to note people with disabilities were left far behind other groups in gaining the right to vote in Canada and Manitoba It wasn t until 77 years later in 1993 that people with intellectual disabilities secured the right to vote after changes to the Canada Elections Act following a Charter of Rights and Freedoms challenge in 1988 Although the right for people with intellectual disabilities has been secured many are still waiting for fulfilment of that right According to Electoral Insight April 2004 an Elections Canada publication the process of securing full access to the right to vote is ongoing and unfinished Although there has been some progress toward accessibility and inclusion people with disabilities face difficulty when engaging with our democratic institutions and processes The sheer lack of policy and accountability means for instance even our provincial legislature is not accessible In that same vein we pay lip service to equality and while Elections Manitoba and Elections Canada are working to make voting accessible without any hard and fast regulations imposed on candidates and parties election information materials meetings and debates are still mostly inaccessible to many people with disabilities Excluding people with disabilities from the election process makes it very challenging for

    The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act AODA Other Resources Links Endorsers Effective Implementation Strong Legislation You Can Help Make Manitoba Barrier Free Spread the Word Endorse the Call Subscribe Follow Us on Twitter Join Us on Facebook To increase decrease the font PC ctrl ctrl MAC command command Remarkable Contrast in Headlines for Two Free Press Human Rights Stories Jan 28 2016 Stories featured in January 29th print edition of the Winnipeg Free Press dealt with about recent advances in human rights One headline celebrates a courageous champion The other headline focuses on the cost of complying with human rights obligations Here s the letter we just submitted to the paper s editor note that the links are to the online version of the paper that feature slightly different headlines What a striking contrast in the headlines for two human rights stories featured in the January 28th print edition Mia Robson s article celebrates Cindy Blackstock as a civil rights heroine in A Champion for Canada s indigenous children A4 for her determined and courageous leadership in forcing the federal government to fulfil their longstanding charter and human rights responsibilities On the other hand the headline for Nick Martin s article Accessibility to cost millions B1 focuses on the costs that Manitoba school divisions may face in fulfilling their charter and human rights responsibilities Not surprisingly the cost faced by those divisions that have worked hard to meet these obligations over the last decade will be considerably less than the divisions that have not yet made this a priority And yes The Accessibility for Manitobans Act now requires that school divisions and other public sector bodies hold public meetings that are accessible to all Manitobans It is alarming that some public sector bodies would find this a novel concept
