design aesthetics Dismissed as too revolutionary when it was first submitted in 1931 Harry Beck s Underground map solved the problem of how to represent clearly and elegantly a dense complex interweaving of train lines Placing the stations at similar intervals regardless of their true locations amplifies the area of central London increasing its clarity while the straight lines and interchange symbols confer a simplicity and order on the network A cartographic icon Read the rest of the article via Jason Kottke You might also like The Washington Post election maps How Star Wars changed the world UK general election 2010 maps NYT Top World Cup players on Facebook Election 2010 maps from NYT Previous post Skype in numbers Next post As much light as you need Follow any comments here with the RSS feed for this post Both comments and trackbacks are currently closed You may also like The Washington Post election maps How Star Wars changed the world UK general election 2010 maps NYT Top World Cup players on Facebook Election 2010 maps from NYT Browse by category 3D Apple Architecture Arts Awards winners Books Cartoons Design Expedia Funny Illustrations Infographics Maps Miscellaneous msnbc com New York Times

This is the first time we are using this framework and it is awesome It makes my life as a web developer much easier especially when I was completely new to it For this project we built a framework in AS3 that allows flash to communicate with the server and to make requests in real time The framework makes it easy to parse responses from the server and deliver them to different parts of the application With that we are able to support deep linking back button and breadcrumb Last but not least important is the new map engine I built recently There are two parts to this The first part is the script I wrote that runs through any ESRI shape file and parses it to native AS3 code The second part is the engine that takes the code and renders it on the screen With this engine we can create pretty much any kind of maps quickly and efficiently View the tracker Swine flu infections around the world and in the U S Aug 3 2009 Post a comment Maps msnbc com Portfolio By Vu Nguyen Click on image to view the map I am particularly proud of the world map because we managed to create it from scratch in a day Even better I designed the code so that we could reuse the map again without any extra development time That means editors can just plug in a new data set and the map is ready to go View the world map View the U S map EDF Global CO2 Emissions Map May 18 2009 Post a comment Maps Portfolio By Vu Nguyen Design Map Programming I worked on this project a couple months ago The data set was interesting and I had full control over how to design and implement it which was a lot of fun Because of the short deadline I didnâ t manage to implement all the little details for this map But in the end it turned out well Click here to view the map Unemployment rate from 07 to 08 Dec 5 2008 Post a comment Maps msnbc com Portfolio By Vu Nguyen Map Programming The data set shows very interesting patterns The coastal states got hit hard by the housing crisis so their unemployment rates are worse than the rest of the U S You will probably notice that Michigan house of GM Ford and Chrysler is doing pretty bad In fact it has the highest unemployment rate as of October 2008 The only state that shares the same honor with Michigan is Rhode Island with 9 3 percent unemployment The coding part of the project took me about a day to write Kriss Chaumont designed the layout and manipulated the data We will keep updating the map every month when the new data comes out Click here to view the graphics The work behind msnbc com election maps Dec 3 2008 Post a comment Design Maps msnbc com Politics

The interactive team at msnbc com worked on it for months before I arrived By the time I started most of the core functionality have been written I ended up working on the polling panel and helped with the fundraising panel You should spend some time exploring the map because it has a lot of interesting data that is not immediately apparent on the first screen When you get tired from looking at the enormous amount of data you can head to the Analysis section and listen to what Chuck Todd has to say about the upcoming election In the same section you can make your own prediction or view possible scenarios And if you are not yet completely satisfied you can go ahead and check out previous elections Virtual Earth interactive map template Nov 16 2008 Post a comment Maps Portfolio Programming By Vu Nguyen Click on image to view the map This map is the first version of a more ambitious project that I am working on Right now it works like a tool for editors to map interesting news and events An editor can create a collection in Virtual Earth and use the rss feed generated from the collection to feed the map The tool is interesting in a way because it gives editors control over what they want to display They do not have to come to us the producers to make changes on the map The editors used the tool in a few projects and they seemed to like it At one point we had 3 or 4 projects using this tool from various sections on the site Continue reading Carbon Emissions Across the United States Nov 16 2008 Post a comment Maps New York Times Portfolio By Vu Nguyen Click on image to view the graphics Electric power production and transportation are the two largest sources of carbon emissions in the United States But there are big differences in emissions between companies and from state to state that may make it harder to reach any agreement on cuts Click here to view the graphics Disappearing Foods Encouraging a Comeback Nov 16 2008 Post a comment Design Maps Portfolio By Vu Nguyen A new book â œRenewing Americaâ s Food Traditionsâ by Gary Paul Nabhan identifies 93 foods once common in American kitchens but now in danger of disappearing Some are livestock breeds or varieties of crop plants others are wild species such as the Carolina flying squirrel The book organizes the foods by gastronomic regions which are shown on the map below Click here to view the graphics Prison Population Around the Globe Nov 16 2008 Post a comment Maps New York Times Portfolio By Vu Nguyen Click on image to view the graphics The United States has the highest incarceration rate and largest number of criminals behind bars Click here to view the graphics Toyota s Global Presence Nov 16 2008 Post a comment Design Maps New York Times Portfolio By Vu Nguyen
