  • On Saving the World by Bob Biderman
they could possible get out of that dreadful place But once gone they look back nostalgically Nothing but the bold nothing but the bolder who is left to tell the tale Who is there to pass the story on For the story must be told or else all will die out with me Everything will go if I don t save it So it s up to me It s

  • Iraq and Vietnam by Bob Biderman
and strike against the likes of Henry Ford to say nothing of the Blacks who at the time were living in an apartheid regime and saw more burning crosses and bloodstained hoods than the cherished slogans writ bravely on the national coinage The sixties in America swept all that aside A new generation who had taken to heart the slogans of their great and glorious leaders were astonished to find that those fine phrases only held true if you had the right colour skin and your politics didn t question the dictates of Adam Smith This was the generation that went down South in droves to right what they saw as centuries of hollow cant and injustice Some of them gave up their lives in that cause Others went to jail Still others were sent to Vietnam Vietnam was a national dilemma Like Iraq there were those good denizens of the Political Class well credentialed liberals who told us hand on heart that if we didn t fight in Vietnam we would soon be fighting the Commies al Qaeda of its day on the shores of California Back then it wasn t the Axis of Evil but rather the Evil Empires China and Russia that was sneakily behind the Red Menace There was also a theory spoken of with great earnestness by the politicos of the day with as much passionate fervour as the Powells the Straws and the Blairs which they called the Domino Effect It said that if we didn t stand up to those nations bent on sowing the seeds of World Communism now our children would regret it for if North Vietnam was allowed to succeed in their aggression then the other nations of Indo China would topple endlessly like rows of helpless ivories stood end

  • This Could Be the Start of Something Big by Bob Biderman
which is why I suppose marches almost always end up there We knew we d come to the right place because in the tunnels people had set up shop little tables which sold all the paraphernalia and gear that goes along with every demo books buttons and badges But as we emerged onto the green there were also tables from the various organisations focused around two other themes of the day Palestine and Islam The two of course are interconnected but the manner in which both were expounded made me feel slightly uncomfortable because of the vague but disturbing allusions to fundamentalism In fact as we walked further into the park toward the massing congregants we witnessed a curious sight of young Muslims holding aloft great orange banners bearing slogans such as Reject Western Solutions which seemed innocuous enough until you started thinking about the hidden subtext What solutions should be accepted then Eastern ones And what does that mean The rule of the burka These people clearly saw the march as a prime recruiting ground for young Asians who had been drawn here for diverse reasons who were angry with a government that seemed to be ignoring them who saw themselves targeted as scapegoats and who were searching for answers to fundamental questions regarding their future in a country that looked upon them as potential if not actual terrorists The young Muslim recruiters who met them with smiles and slickly produced leaflets as they broke ranks from the march and filed into the park were sharp and articulate They reminded me of the smooth talking Black Panthers during the 70s who so easily seduced the incoherent youths happening to connect with them They were seen as tough fearless willing to fight and most importantly ready to take up arms something that appealed to masses of hungry street kids looking for quick and easy answers swept up by the cult of the gun The Muslim recruiters were far less daunting and spoke nothing about arming themselves even in self defence But the essential message was the same You re either part of the solution or part of the problem the Panthers said There was no middle ground Maybe there wasn t then And maybe the middle ground is slipping away quickly again The orange banners which fluttered like sinister echoes around the periphery were mainly ignored by the mass of protesters including most of the Asians who were quickly filling the empty space beyond the great speaker s platform with its enormous overhead screen which projected the image of those on stage in eerie phosphorescence as if they were rock stars instead of rebel Labour MPs and marginalized artists and intellectuals the usual suspects as the media loves to brand them suddenly given a lease on life by their rise to prominence No longer voices in the wilderness they now articulate popular sentiments and the media that formerly vilified them is showing unusual respect since opposition to a war in

  • The American Talaban by Bob Biderman
hole I first read about him the other day when the newspapers told of the curious incident of finding a white American with the surviving Taliban prisoners Then today it turned out that he was just twenty years old and from a middle class family in Marin A sensitive young man so his mother said when asked about her son It seems he converted to the Muslim faith when he was seventeen and still in high school Then he went off to Pakistan to study with it seems his parents consent They lost track of him this past summer only to find out the other day that he had been fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan Now he is a prisoner of the American forces there What will happen to him is anyone s guess but I hope that they treat him decently According to the mother who is a Buddhist while the father is a practicing Catholic her son began his interest in the Muslim religion after reading the autobiography of Malcolm X It will strike some as odd that a white middle class boy from the affluent suburbs of San Francisco would have been drawn to the passions

  • The Angry Leviathan by Bob Biderman
Bush administration is talking about is finishing the job by evoking the flames of hell And yet the tiresome inertia caused by months of watching nation after nation bend to the will of the Angry Leviathan has made us all torpid and punch drunk We can hardly get up the energy to resist And so we watch as the Angry Leviathan begins to roll once more unstoppably crushing anything in

  • Pogrom by Bob Biderman
blamed not so much for killing Christ as for helping to strangle the native economies through their link with international finance Of course there was some truth in these fears but as Vital quite rightly points out the focus of blame was directed as always toward the wrong people For the vast majority of Jews suffered from the same excesses of Capitalism as the Russian peasantry The Jews who had gained enormous wealth through their cross national dealings were mainly exempt from the terror Vital spends a lot of energy trying to come to some determination about the cause of the brutal upsurge in sectarian violence that erupted with such ferocity and lasted for several years before dissipating into random attacks According to him there were over 200 towns and villages that were plundered with many Jews injured and killed The question is why Why then And why was it most severe in south western Russia The closest he comes to a reasonable answer had to do with the collapsing economic and social order with all the fears it engendered And the identification of the Jews with the worst and most rapacious elements of capitalism which was going through a

  • The Great Fear by Bob Biderman
does that mean And what does it mean when they say that the plague is just starting to be felt in countries like China and India where they expect millions more to die in the next decade The human mind can hardly conceive statistics like this We can focus on a lone instance an image of a child perhaps emaciated and tearful But millions It s like trying to comprehend the cosmos And yet is that not what happens in the world Death and putrefaction takes place in a cycle of mortality and renewal Mass disasters are commonplace Are they more today than a hundred years ago Is there a mass mortality chart that tracks the progress of genocidal grim reapers Or is something else going on like Michael Moore has pointed out the manifestation of fear that is pumped into our homes on a daily basis with milk cartons plastered with faces of missing children and TVs sending out endless images of mayhem and murder in order to keep us afraid and therefore malleable Certainly there is a Great Fear that has overtaken us as there was in the fifties This one is of a different sort but we already see the consequences like parents being cautioned not to photograph their children s school play because it might fall into the hands of paedophiles and end up on the Internet Or Israelis on the flight back home from Mombasa saying they are now too frightened to ever leave Israel Too frightened to leave Israel the most besieged country on earth What a state of affairs And yet the news yesterday also had a feature on the need to build more airports in Southern England because of the surge in overseas travel So which way is it going to be

  • The Imperial President by Bob Biderman
true I was thinking that if I were back in the States I wouldn t have voted for the Democrats either It s not a question of who s in charge it s more a matter of which one will play out their role as the producers of a new model Manifest Destiny What is surprising though is how the media has so easily fallen into line There seems to be a quiet understanding that the American Miracle will only survive if everyone believes in it hard enough It s like keeping the Stock Market afloat with fantasised helium Sometimes it actually works for a while until the spectre of the Hindenburg explodes again The problem is that America became the only model left of abundance that somehow has been able to equate itself with the mythology of eternal happiness And it s infectious Allegorical soap operas are repackaged sanitised and translated for the overseas media to imbibe and imbue In a half starved and chaotic world it acts as a magnet of tainted hope like candy laced with arsenic All this is held together with a powerful glue And Power is as Power does Like a reigning god America
