  • New “Touched With Fire” Movie—Finding the Beauty in Bipolar | bpHope - bp Magazine Community
What an amazing detailed review of such an important film Now I am very much looking forward to it Thanks Angie January 19 2016 I have been fortunate enough to be able to live without medication since 2010 I have battled this illness for nearly 20 years Regular behavioral therapy and limited social environment are my life now so I can follow this med free dream I can live with that I do miss working full time but my psychologist is positive that I will be able to return someday with my advancements in recognizing my behavior Some days my brain just can t get enough feed I don t know what I would do without online classes and painting to provide the constant stimulus I have come to the point in my life where I recognize the true beauty that comes with what others call an illness I am no longer ashamed or live in fear of ridicule or persecution This is me and I wear it well Kitcat January 20 2016 Like many folks I was misdiagnosed with major depression at age 13 during my 1st hospitalization I was correctly diagnosed in my 20s now early 40s Thanks to regular ECT treatments I am more stable than I ve been in a very long time I used to hide my illness due to shame embarrassment pain etc but not for the last 7 10 years Often times I tend to blurt out that I have bipolar so that it will explain to those around me if it seems like I am off I feel it s better easier to explain ahead of time than try to explain in mid episode I am so excited about this move Most movies that have bipolar characters portray the characters in such a negative light and many times that s all people know about bipolar I am so looking forward to something different Kitcat January 20 2016 BTW I know that alot of folks are negative towards ECT but this was my choice after extensive research and after trying almost every medication known to man or so it seemed Krissa January 20 2016 Like many of us I was misdiagnosed for years with major depression and anxiety My first hospitalization I was 17 and I m 41 now It wasn t until after the birth of my daughter 12 years ago that I got properly diagnosed However at that time I did not like my diagnosis Bi polar meant crazy right And those meds they gave me made me feel like a zombie made me gain weight and took my happy away So for years I went on and off meds and was hospitalized many times for both manic and depressive episodes some of them resulting in suicide attempts one of which I was on a respirator for 5 days I seriously felt like my doctors guinea pig from all the differant drugs combos and doses i tried After my last hospitalization a few years back I found my manias were just as bad as my depression I was paranoid and experiencing psychosis I had experienced that before but never to that extreme and it scared me Being happy just wasn t worth it anymore Finally I am on a combination of drugs that work for me I can feel happy all on my own I can complete tasks I went back to school I have two jobs and work full time I run a household My oldest daughter recently got diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and yes it s scarey but it did not send me into a depression I am thinking and coping in a positive and healthy way I have down days sometimes I m human but I take my meds faithfully I have a wonderful support team around me and meditation has worked wonders for me Bi polar is a piece of who I am but it is not everything I am At my work today i help people who are struggling with mental illness i know first hand how tough it can be living with mental illness but there is hope It should be treated just like any other illness and we need to the proper steps to take care of ourselves to prevent from getting sick I wish you all peace and love on your journeys Poppy January 20 2016 I have had Bipolar 2 all my life It s a very creative brain that sings paints writes A Brain that was gifted down thru out the years from my Fathers side It wasn t until 1997 that I was Hospitalized for the first time I was 47 going through para menopausal dad died of cancer my brother had to go in a hospital for heart problems All in that year 1997 Way to much to handle Three Hospitals that year I was admitted to I hated being on Meds and a course every time you try to get off of them by yourself it s a disaster The 3rd Hospital was like being in prison Later I found out from my Doctor that they purposely made it miserable and hulmulating so you don t find yourself back in a hospital So that stay I was listening I wanted to get off my meds but this time I did it the right way I worked with a Doctor that weaned me off the Depakote and replaced it with Salmon Oil 9 pills a day plus reducing Depakote under the Doctors Help After several months I was only taking two Salmon oil a day It worked I was off the meds and had the balance that was necessary Another thing I learned was to make sure even though I always believed in the Natural food yoga exercise before that happened If you can t sleep stop what you re doing because most likely you re having too much fun If you can t eat Stop eat healthily

honor the disease and also find the humanity For the role of Marco I was looking for someone who was very intense but socially uninhibited says Dalio I needed the edge of someone who s desperately trying to shine in society but who s really covering up a very vulnerable and sensitive side That ended up being Luke Kirby a Canadian born actor whose credits include Cra h Burn Rectify and The Astronaut Wives Club Kirby actually had some insight into playing a character with bipolar thanks to a part in a production of Jump Cut at the Women s Project Theater in New York City in 2006 A review in the New York Times described an utterly captivating performance by Luke Kirby as Dave the brilliant young manic depressive whose circular inescapable fate is the central mystery of the work Says Kirby I was happy that experience was available after germinating all those years ago 9 He took it all to another level when he got direction Dalio remembers We went for long walks when he would open up about himself and his own issues Kirby says he was intrigued by Marco s motor his defiant spirit and audacity that were equally inspiring and bewildering as was his exhaustive determination He was also drawn to the theme of the sweetness and universality of love Two people fighting for that is always a good hook especially if it rings true and is challenged authentically Marco and Carla s relationship gives many opportunities for that he reflects Like Dalio Kirby thinks the movie opens the door wider for engagement around bipolar The movie goes beyond normal and abnormal he says Bipolar 1 has so much more dimension The bridge to connect with what we consider abnormal isn t that far Production Values Dalio started the script for Touched With Fire as a film student at New York University s Tisch School of the Arts That s where he met his wife who was a fellow student And that s where he encountered Spike Lee the famed director producer writer and actor 10 He actually chooses students to get behind and support Dalio says of his erstwhile professor And Spike shows tough love I clearly remember him telling the directing class There are 36 of you here One of you will be a director and the others might go on to do other things in the business He implanted that fear along with a desire in me to succeed I was fascinated with the idea that Carla has this great talent for writing poetry and when she falls in love with Marco they believe that being bipolar fuels their creativity Katie Holmes Lee patiently prodded Dalio through multiple drafts of the story and ultimately served as the film s executive producer During filming he showed Dalio shots from other movies as examples of what might work or not for Touched With Fire Lee almost never phrased his teachings as statements or comments

now stocked up for a few years When she took their cat to the vet and came home with an extra kitten Rory accepted the kitten with open arms she reports and they now have a rule that they only go to the vet s together He isn t a pushover she says he just knows that in the spring I pull a few whoppers and that is OK In fact she says Rory took the news of her diagnosis better than she did They were dating at the time Elizabeth says and Rory made it a point to find books that would be helpful He never judged me for having bipolar she adds I m very lucky to have found Rory Sidebar Learning when a hug can help When Heather and Ken first met in fall 2002 Heather certainly wasn t in the mood for romance She was experiencing serious depression and very resistant to dating but Ken waited patiently When we did start dating I was very forthright about having bipolar disorder and he was very understanding recalls Heather 44 Now Heather s relationship with her husband is a rock that steadies her when symptoms crop up In Heather s case that s often behaviors that signal depression not getting out of bed failing to eat healthy foods and crying a lot After nine years of marriage Ken has come to understand what his wife needs when she is ill And Heather made it a priority to communicate to her husband about what kind of support she finds the most helpful Sometimes it s just the simple things that are important Heather says A hug from Ken can be very grounding when I m having a difficult time He also knows when to give me space such as when I get irritable angry and when I lash out Perhaps more importantly Ken and Heather have an agreement that they ll promptly address any worrisome symptoms Heather admits she s not always receptive when Ken spots signs of depression or hypomania such as being quick to anger or spending too much on online shopping yet she will usually agree to call her doctor Couples therapy has also helped us she says We ve learned not to blame each other when we discuss sensitive issues such as my bipolar disorder and to respectively express our feelings Sometimes that may mean taking a break or even going to different rooms when a discussion becomes too heated She adds What has been most important is for both of us to realize that I m more than the identified patient in our relationship I m Heather a wife who is more than her illness and who needs and wants hope and love from her partner Sidebar In sickness and in health Dan and Dolores have weathered 43 years of marriage and Dan s bipolar swings Dan now 73 was accurately diagnosed in his late 20s He and Dolores were contemplating marriage and she accepted the news along with the man He was a real charmer and had a wonderful sense of humor Dolores remembers Dan was in a stable period when they met but shortly after the wedding he slipped into depression For the next decade he cycled from months of mania marked by reckless spending and anger to months of immobilizing depression to stretches of stability that might last half a year He went through a series of jobs never keeping one for long I was ill and non productive and she was the provider and caretaker Dan says Dolores held down several part time jobs taking their two children to work with her because they couldn t afford child care The couple went through two bankruptcies It was painful and it was devastating but I didn t leave because I don t believe in divorce says Dolores 75 But even in the most difficult moments Dan s sense of humor would come shining through They held on until Dan found the treatment he needed at Washington University An equally important turning point was their decision to start a peer support group in 1980 which became one of the founding chapters of what is now the national Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance DBSA The work not only helped his wife become more educated about the disorder Dan says but through running meetings she gained many skills in talking with me in a very helpful and therapeutic way We learned how to communicate even around tough topics and not blame the other person Dolores adds Dolores admits to mixed feelings about their marriage over the years but says that their life improved as their ability to address Dan s health got better He has changed in a really positive way over the years she says And our communication strategies just got better and better We feel so blessed now Sidebar Another definition of partner People who are single may find a family member who becomes a partner in recovery For Jackie that s her dad Larry We ve become an amazing team at managing my bipolar I explains the 25 year old We even have a special binder that we keep on the coffee table that has copies of the most important papers about my illness and how we should handle things The binder includes a list of her medications and what they re for contact information for her doctors steps to take in various crisis situations even copies of some of her homework from psychotherapy Jackie has found the skills she s learning in dialectical behavior therapy especially helpful in managing her symptoms When she comes home from group she shares new information with her father Also really helpful she says is both of us reading everything we can get our hands on about bipolar We test out new techniques for managing things to see what works best for us For example Jackie now keeps track of when or whether she s
