    most important aspects of self care is to remind them to do their school work and studying on a daily basis rather than cramming and pulling all nighters We also know that for children who are prone to depressive episodes extra sleeping can make a low mood worse Can exercise help my child Many children with a mood disorder may complain that their energy level is very low others may report that they have so much energy they can t sit still Exercise often has a mood elevating quality and especially for children with depression may help them feel better Children who exercise may be involved in team sports 4 which can give them a more positive self image and higher self esteem Exercise also may help a child to become calm before bedtime When children have very high levels of energy during a hypomanic episode extra strenuous physical activity may help get rid of some of that agitation that often accompanies mania and hypomania How do we manage diet weight and appetite in my child on medication In children with bipolar episodes one of the more common symptoms is an alteration in appetite Some children with depression may have a loss of appetite food doesn t taste good or they re not interested in eating and this may lead to weight loss Other children with depression have an increased appetite they start eating lots of carbohydrates and may experience weight gain 3 Many of the medications that are used to treat bipolar disorder can be associated with increased appetite and weight gain This can be accompanied by secondary complications including elevations in cholesterol and triglycerides alterations in glucose metabolism and alterations in insulin in extreme cases some individuals may develop diabetes Other individuals may become hypothyroid and start to
