to check off the basic requirements cardio 3 check weight training check stretch 4 check break a sweat check get lost in music check smile nicely at others check I m a woo woo hippie what s it a all about Alfie kind of gal at heart If I can no longer go out completely on my own and have my feet in the dirt and my face in the sun like I used to in order to get my groove on because of medical restrictions then so be it I will find something else to help me keep my head on straight I ve done yoga 5 for years but never really had a practice as in learning more about it working to improve and understanding yoga s benefits I joined a local studio and have traded the gym for yoga classes of varied sorts and attend 3 4 times a week Here are the key benefits for me Focused breathing calms me physically mentally reduces anxiety and stabilizes mood Setting an intention for each session gives me permission to focus on one thing pushing away other demands Yoga is simply physical meditation Deep stretching brings blood flow to joints and muscles providing healing and renewed flexibility Move it or lose it Poses build muscular and cardiovascular strength Certain classes power yoga burn huge calories I learn patience and how to keep my mind calm while holding challenging poses breathe I learn how to clear my mind of nothing but the moment the present which I can take into my daily life Calming effect of a single hour s practice lasts for hours after Music played at my studio is transcendent type adding to effect Yogis participants are part of a community and tend to be supportive of one

is headstand shisasana it is an inversion that is referred to by some as the king of all yoga poses though really to reference a hierarchy in yoga is counterintuitive to its entire philosophy Headstand is something that always seemed so far out of reach for me that more often than not when it came up during classes I wouldn t even try Recently I ve been going through a difficult and important transition in my life healing from an extremely painful breakup while trying to avoid falling into the familiar patterns of depression mania or resorting to substance abuse to numb the intensity of my feelings Since the breakup my life has changed radically though I m discovering more each day that in fact I m actually returning to my true self and that I had lost a real sense of identity and comfort being my own independent person having sacrificed and given up a lot of myself and my life for him during the relationship I d strayed away from yoga when we were together and have returned to it during these past few months of continuing to heal and adapt In my newfound practice I feel the memory of my past self and suffering in my body in the transformation and growth of my ability my strength and balance After resisting for so long I ve finally given into change and have done so through this notion of radical acceptance that resonates through yoga I accept that headstand is not something that comes easily for me whether it s physical strength or fear that holds hold me back from the posture I ve made the decision finally to push myself to try it by accepting my current ability and the possibility of failure Yesterday I attempted it for the first time without the support of a wall behind me As I kicked up one leg and then the other I flailed I could do one leg or the other but not both at a time Finally I gave one final try and for just split second I was upside down standing on my head legs together and wobbling in the air It lasted only a second and I promptly fell out of it but the feeling in that moment was exhilarating it was not a feeling that I had done it but rather that I could that it was possible And rather than resisting or resenting that imperfection I accepted it I was in exactly the place I needed to be flailing maybe falling down but almost upright almost graceful almost there About the author Brianne LaPelusa Has 7 Articles Brianne LaPelusa is a writer singer and graduate student living in Chicago She is the cofounder of DOLLFEEDER magazine and a performing musician in the band DOLL FOOD Brianne was first diagnosed with bipolar II disorder at age twelve and re diagnosed at age twenty with bipolar I after experiencing her first manic episode Though she has
