2 a prescription that pushed David over into a state of akathisia and suicidality a lockup care center whose contracted doctors made money not by helping people but by admitting as many patients as they could squeeze into a bland and hopeless enclosure We knew it was oppressive when we were in it but in insight it was also a shameful failure of care Currently there is no standard of education for a diagnosis 3 Many people treat depression including family practitioners and social workers and the varying degree of competence is maddening for families who are desperate for quality care Families seeking help find professional camps divided between psychopharmacology and psychotherapy And often medications compound the suffering Caught in the middle patients are dying This year marks the tenth consecutive year our nation s suicide 4 rate has increased while outcomes for heart disease diabetes and cancer are improving Half of those who died by suicide 4 were under the care of a general practitioner One third of those who died by suicide 4 were under the care of a psychiatrist As one doctor told me It s time to put the head back on the body We demand excellent outcomes for every other major disease We track success rates for heart surgeons We compare and contrast survival rates for cancers Why has the treatment of mental illness in our country been so lacking that many inpatient psychiatric centers don t even bother tracking the outcome of their patients David s doctors didn t realize he d killed himself just one day after his release We could be saving lives by coordinating patient care sharing essential treatment information scheduling and tracking referrals and providing proper follow up care With today s technological advances a fully coordinated system of care

  • Are you ready to speak up about bipolar disorder? | bpHope - bp Magazine Community
bipolar and or anxiety disorder More people need to speak up and be advocates for themselves and for others We need others too know they re not alone Sheila December 16 2015 Reply Thank you Sheila fran February 3 2016 Reply I feel its my calling to talk to people about mental illness and would to find out how to accomplish this Penny December 16 2015 Reply I have lived with mental illness for around 15yrs I have had my share of hospital stays I continue to grow as a better person and I know that there are so many people that suffer in silence No more Over the past few years I have come to accept my disease and speak out about it Bipolar disorder is not something that you can always hide We must try to find a way to let others know it s ok I also suffer from depression and anxiety and seasonal Disorder And being a diabetic I have my plate full I have a part time job and an awesome support group Sarah December 16 2015 Reply Think this is brilliant Am a big advocate for speaking out about Bipolar mental health in general I ve suffered with depression for at least 27yrs am now waiting on a diagnosis of Bipolar Its only the last few years that people are more open to talk about it but it really does help to hear Not too good at the moment but hard to get the right help when you re in that black hole Francesca December 16 2015 Reply My husband and I have lived with his bipolar disorder for 16 years unmedicated in denial on his part and now for the last two on medication and all the challenges that have to be met with that issue Your short account was interesting but certainly not enough to really dig into My husband still refuses to let ANYONE know about his condition He puts on a mask in public and for this behaviour he pays a great price He does not realize it but the energy he uses on maintaining that mask often slides him down the slippery slope to depression We live in a third world country Amazon won t ship to us Other sites like Abe Books or Good Reads want to charge almost double the book price for shipping Can you help Maria December 17 2015 Reply This is by far the most helpful encouraging and optimistic blog post I ve seen on bipolar disorder in 11 years since my diagnosis Most out there only talk about how negative it is and how to get by but it simply doesn t have to be that way I was hospitalized for the first time this year and afterwards found a new doctor I had two other diagnosis as well that I wasn t being treated for I had already been in school the last few years took some time off to start a family and am about to graduate with an bachelor s in psychology but am going to straight into the graduate program of clinical mental health counseling This is now what I consider my purpose and the silver lining of having this illness I can turn my passion for helping others and empathy I have for them to help them I don t want anyone to hurt if they don t have to If I can help someone hurt just a little less than I ll consider myself useful We always hear that bipolars have to have different types of lives but we can have fulfilling lives too I have been dead inside for 11 years and now I realize that there are so many things worth sticking around for I also realized just how much I love being a mother I thought I hated it but it was the bipolar lying to me You re spot on about helping others even when I m having a low mood day It really helps me keep my head above water GREAT POST Eric December 17 2015 Reply Hi I think it is good I live in a professional world and have done very well I prefer to stay in my shell I have seen others not managing their BP issued and listen to Normal People talk about them People are not ready in the workplace to have someone come out and say I AM BI POLAR Bought your book for the wife and it creeped her out The reality is we are all on a timeline we will all end the same I view bipolar as a cancer some do better than others I can tell you in a way that may be had to understand that the depression is so low that you find comfort in it that it becomes soothing Then the other side where the closer to death you are the more you feel alive There is nothing good about this disorder CHEERS seekingthelight82 December 21 2015 Reply Report user I was diagnosed with bp 2 last summer just this past summer I was diagnosed with bp1 My new diagnosis threw me for a loop • The Pain of Misdiagnosis - A Discussion About Bipolar | bpHope - bp Magazine Community
t see why over five years of this same pattern it should be ignored I m just really scared because the manic periods are getting worst every time causing psychosis delusions hypersexuality wreckless behavior and now even aggression I just dont want to end up in a hospital before this is dealt with but so far I feel like my issues are just being pooh poohed for mummy issues Any advice would be great I feel pretty vulnerable right now I probably should have got an advocate March 16 2012 at 9 05 am 69789 anonymous 2 Participant Hi Weatherwax I wouldn t attempt to say whether or not you have bipolar anywhere on the spectrum or borderline or both because I m not a pdoc or psychologist However I do agree with you that a person can have both as I ve been diagnosed with both and I know this fits me my moods and behaviour That doesn t mean it is the correct diagnosis for you though I know that I would find it incredibly frustrating and annoying if my pdoc wouldn t listen to me and just carried on the course he has set without letting me question him about my diagnosis So what would I do I d change pdocs It seems quite clear that you are not getting on with the one you have and therefore it will be impossible to build up the therapeutic relationship you need to discuss your episodes of depression and mania and also to discuss the medication he is prescribing It sounds like he s being pig headed and not giving you any consideration at all That s tantamount to treating you like a child Is there anyway you can find a new pdoc Just my thoughts zephyr March 16 2012 at 9 51 am 69790 anonymous 2 Participant No I just have to sit pretty and be sensible till he diagnoses me then look for a second opinion If I walk away at this stage then it will look bad as if I m having a tantrum I have told him absloutely everything with honesty and have trusted him to do his job but this reluctance to address my current situation and instead my past is getting difficult for me He keeps telling me how he s doing a good job by looking into my history and hearing my opinion but I just feel like I ve got no where I just don t know how to firmly say this is not my personality this is a different issue which only occurs three times a year Everytime I try I just feel like what I ve said has vanished To add I don t think he s a bad psychiatrist I just feel he had a bias opinon before I came which he even admitted and I just feel like I ve had to battle with that opinion throughout my sessions with him I don t think he s
