    artistic and economic development of numerous Nunavut communities In Pangnirtung the Guild played a significant role in the weaving studio s early history In order to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first exhibition of Pangnirtung tapestries held at the Guild in 1972 the 2012 exhibition celebrates a journey through four decades of creation The current retrospective exhibition embodies more than thirty tapestries some of which were included in the first exhibition at the Guild These creations which call on numerous areas of expertise including the design of the piece as well as the interpretation of that design for the tapestry and weaving allowed both men and women to acquire specialized know how while achieving a collective activity this is a fundamental value in Inuit culture Today these artists work side by side to produce unique artworks that are held in the highest esteem the world over This exhibition was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Uqqurmiut Centre for Arts and Crafts the Pangnirtung based tapestry workshop In order to attest to the vivacity of their art a group of Pagnirtung artists will attend the event and will be present at the show s opening Lecture given by
