    In 2015 The Carnival Band and Ellis will present a selection of the ballads at the Spitalfields Festival June 11 the conference Voices and Books 1500 1700 in Newcastle July 17 and the Brighton Early Music Festival November 6 The recordings equivalent in length to 15 CDs will continue throughout 2015 and 2016 Andy Watts the founder of The Carnival Band says We re thrilled to have been chosen by Chris Marsh as the core performers for this project The Carnival Band has always been known for its ability to crossover between different genres especially early music and folk To underline the genuine fusion that exists in the ballad tradition we re launching the project alongside Vivien Ellis the perfect early music voice for these songs and Folkestra coached by Kathryn Tickell and Dave Wood It s going to be really exciting to see what these talented young musicians make of this material The research Hit songs and their significance in 17th century England funded by the AHRC is being undertaken by Professor Christopher Marsh of Queen s University Belfast and Dr Angela McShane of the Victoria and Albert Museum A broadside ballad was a song printed on one side of a sheet of paper that sold for a penny in streets and marketplaces Typically it featured a text of twelve or more verses several simple woodcut illustrations and the name of a suggested melody The pictures and tunes were frequently well known having been recycled from previous songs Chris Marsh says Ballads were the pop songs of their day and it can be convincingly argued that the modern music industry commercially driven and predominantly urban has its roots among the publishers of broadsides in seventeenth century London In terms of the subject matter of balladry love led the way

    and Capers tours with Maddy Prior in 2012 and 2014 we d like to take The Carnival Choir to a new level We re not touring with Maddy this year but we invite you to join us for A Carnival of Carols a special Christmas concert in which The Carnival Choir will take centre stage As in previous years preparation will take the form of a one day workshop a rehearsal on the concert day and loads of on line support in the form of recordings and music to download The choir will be on stage for the whole of the concert and will sing in about half the items in the programme the rest being performed by The Carnival Band Singers will learn arrangements from A Tapestry of Carols Carols and Capers and the band s extensive repertoire of seasonal music They will learn harmony parts and descants as well as the tunes and will be given access to downloads of sheet music and mp3 sound files or a CD on request to help them prepare for the concert On the day of the concert the choir will join The Carnival Band for a final rehearsal The cost to
