  • INTERVIEW WITH LIZ MANDEVILLE, Warrior Summit
    to build on but deep knowledge of blues history and my place in it The same year I graduated from school 1996 I released my first CD on the Earwig label Look At Me Over the next fourteen years three more discs followed each greeted by critical acclaim wonderful opportunities like tours of Europe and the chance to work with some of the finest musicians in Blues It was while I was touring to support my third Earwig release Back In Love Again a CD that featured songs inspired by a series of terrible losses the death of both my parents break up of my marriage deaths of three of my music business partners all within the space of a few years and what it meant to be on my own in the world that I met the man who is now my husband Shell shocked by loss not wanting another painful experience I was not an easy woman to get close to but this man was and is exceptional A former marine and a union electrician Carl is a very serious guy He moved to Chicago to court me but had a hard time finding decent work I had been so seriously disappointed by my bad love choices that my attitude was No romance without finance Carl felt his best option at the time was to join the National Guard which he did Deployment is a fact of life for military families I was very proud of Carl s service following Hurricane Katrina when he spent a month with his Illinois Guard Unit helping restore order to that sad chaotic situation Hearing that he was being deployed to Iraq brought on a lot of other emotions and led to my penning Illinois National Guard Blues which is featured on my fourth Earwig release 2008 s Red Top Due to health complications Carl did not end up deploying to Iraq but he has deployed on several other missions the most recent being a peace keeping mission in the Middle East It was while sitting in a hotel room in Seattle last year after I d gone to see him off for that mission contemplating my next year without him that I wrote A Soldiers Wife Guard families get a monthly magazine featuring different warriors and their stories I was reading about a woman who had to leave her kids and go fight in Afghanistan when I got the idea for My Mama Wears Combat Boots thinking about the old school yard slam and how it s now a badge of honor for a mom to serve her country and wear the dreaded combat boots I thought how far we ve come as women who knows maybe one day a woman will be president Q Please tell us about your two new songs that you will perform for the vets I finally got into the studio last week and laid the tracks for those two songs Combat Boots is a rocker

  • Dominican University's Blues and the Spirit Symposium commemorates Howlin' Wolf's centennial
    surviving original sidemen who played with Howlin Wolf at Chess Records and around the Chicago area in the 1950s and early 60s Wolf s daughters Bettye Marks and Barbra Kelly along with Marie Dixon the widow of Chess songwriter and musician Willie Dixon and the founder of the Blues Heaven Foundation and several scholars will also participate in this discussion The theme for the Elders Council is Setting the Record Straight on Cadillac Records The 2008 film Cadillac Records purported to be the story of the heyday of Chess Records but it contains several historical inaccuracies This panel will bring together academics family members and most importantly musicians who played with Wolf during these years to talk about the man and the times The University was able to invite a very distinctive group of musicians who began their careers with Wolf including blues greats Hubert Sumlin in the film as in real life guitarist Sumlin was the source of much dramatic tension between Wolf and Muddy Waters Eddie Shaw Jody Williams Abb Locke Bob Stroger Eddie C Campbell and a few others to be confirmed Not only will they speak about those times but they will also come together for the first time in many years to perform at the pro jam following the panel discussion playing alongside some of the best contemporary blues musicians in the Chicago area This is a historic gathering of key musicians since the blues are the roots of American popular music these musicians are indeed the founding fathers June 10 th Day Program and Evening Events Thursday highlights include the keynote address by Chuck D who will speak on Blues Rap and Race Dr Karen Wilson of University of California Riverside who will speak on the Sacred and the Secular in Black Music as

  • Allman Brothers film premiere, Please Call Home
    saw triumph and tragedy as the band went from playing free concerts to selling out stadiums across the country but also lost two of its brothers seminal slide guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley These were the years that the group became the road warriors who broke down color barriers as the first integrated rock band to come out of the South It s the story of the rise to prominence of this great American institution who celebrated their 40th Anniversary by once again taking the stage at New York City s famed Beacon Theatre for 15 sold out shows this past March The Allman Brothers and Widespread Panic will perform at Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island in Chicago on Sept 1 and 2 Produced as a fundraiser for the Big House Foundation Please Call Home was directed by long time Allman Brothers Band Historian Archivist and Tour Magician Kirk West He and his wife Kirsten purchased the Big House in 1993 and lived in it for 15 years before moving out to begin the process of turning the house into a museum to honor the Southern rock legends the Allman Brothers Band A former Chicagoan West was
