Parenting Writing It s got to be the Toyota IQ maybe Marketing social media 2 Responses Jul 15 2009 Toyota Ireland s latest publicity campaign for their new micro saloon the IQ is going to include handing out four of the teeny tiny four seaters to bloggers twitter users The lucky individuals will get to use the car for six months in exchange for blogging tweeting about their experiences with the vehicle The promotion was announced by toyotairelan d on Twitter 4 Irish bloggers wanted to give happy homes to 4 Toyota iQ s for 2009 check out http bit ly YV9gT Predictably they ve been inundated In under 12 hrs of launching our IQ promo we ve had excess of 100 applicants 13 incr in daily traf to toyota ie 30 new fols ds twit wk If you ve got a blog and a Twitter account are over 21 and you live in Ireland you can apply for the 6 month Toyota IQ test drive but hurry applications close on Friday You can check out the full terms and conditions here It s a great idea one that s already generating a lot of social media buzz and provided Toyota handles it properly and leaves the individuals to write openly and honestly about their experience of the IQ it could be a real winner for them Who knows if this works out for Toyota it could make a wonderful case study for next year s follow up to Understanding Digital Marketing Posted by Calvin at 14 37 Tagged with blogging IQ Ireland Marketing promotions social media Toyota Twitter Grown up Marketing Business Marketing PR Rant 1 Response Jan 14 2009 Image by Thomas Hawk via Flickr I just read a post in my Feedreader from Damien s corporate portal Mulley Communications where he looks at the difference between marketing and PR the former he surmises is akin to a quick shag while the latter is more of a long term relationship I can see what he s getting at but to my mind PR the building of relationships and reputation for a brand is part and parcel of the bigger overall concept of marketing Marketing encompasses pretty much everything from the inception of a new product or service what does the market want need demand it s design to meet that want need demand it s promotion and sale follow up support everything Including PR So yes there are companies out there who subscribe to the short sharp shock approach to marketing and to PR snapshot advertising campaigns a flurry of press releases coverage for a new product or service and then silence There are also companies that understand the value of building long term productive relationships with their customers with influencers online and in traditional media with society at large I think it s probably more useful borrowing Damiens relationship analogy to compare businesses with people There are those of us who perpetually lurch from one short term

  • healthy fruit and veg for kids -- five a day with food dudes | Writing, life and other animals
of the eating habits of our children Ireland s overall record is none too healthy so any initiative that encourages and rewards children for trying fresh fruit and vegetables and goes on to foster a healthy awareness of the role fresh fruit and vegetables play in a healthy balanced diet is an incredibly positive step The Food Dudes programme was originally developed by the University of Wales Bangor as a response to growing childhood obesity and other diet related issues in UK schoolchildren It revolves around four unlikely super heroes the Food Dudes who act as positive role models for healthy eating and involves an initial phase of repeated tasting of fruit and vegetables in the classroom over a 16 day period with rewards for children who participate followed by a second phase which extends the message beyond the classroom into the home encouraging children to bring their own fruit and veg into school in special Food Dudes containers Their progress is measured on classroom wall charts and children are awarded Food Dudes certificates and other rewards for achieving specific goals Pilot studies in England and Wales demonstrated conclusively that the Food Dudes Programme delivered significant and long lasting increases in children s consumption of fruit vegetables In Ireland the scheme was introduced in three phases the initial pilot in 2002 03 an extended pilot scheme from 2005 2007 followed by the 5 year national roll out that began in 2007 and is currently underway It s great to see the government get behind a scheme that s genuinely innovative and tackles an issue as fundamental to the nation s future as healthy eating in children It smacks of all the things a government should be responsible forward thinking accountable inspirational and pro active with a healthy dollop of common sense on the side It s just a shame some of those same characteristics weren t a bit more widespread in Brian Cowan s cabinet Maybe if they were the country wouldn t be in the mess it s in Still you have to applaud small victories and the Food Dudes programme certainly qualifies on that score So a hearty well done to Mr Cowan and his government for a job well done Now there s a sentence you won t read very often in a newspapers these days Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 0 23 Tagged with five a day food dudes fresh food fruit vegetables 3 Responses to Food dudes helps focus us all on five a day Fluffy Links Tuesday 24th November 2009 Damien Mulley says 24 November 2009 at 6 38 blogs about Food Dudes I might sign up for this myself Joe Scanlon says 24 November 2009 at 8 28 Sounds like a great initiative Well done food dudes I nearly woke the house

  • Yippee! Coffee is good for you…. | Writing, life and other animals
like diabetes and Parkinson s disease at bay Some studies have shown that coffee may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes declares an article on the site going on to explain how researchers at Harvard analyzed data on 120 000 people over an 18 year period and concluded concluded that drinking 1 to 3 cups of caffeinated coffee each day reduces diabetes risk by several percentage points compared with not drinking coffee at all but drinking 6 or more cups slashed men s risk by 54 and women s risk by 30 over those who avoided coffee This study is the latest of hundreds of studies which suggest that coffee may be something of a health food especially in higher amounts says the article Over the past 20 years according to www healingdaily com over 19 000 studies have been conducted to examine the impact of coffee on people s health and the results for the most part are pretty good news for coffee lovers like me The claims seem to hold water too Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tenessee is home to the Institute for Coffee Studies where teams of researchers conduct pioneering bio medical research into the properties of coffee and its effects on human health They also routinely scan scientific literature gathering and analysing coffee related data from studies around the world Many of us have worried that something this good must be bad for you says the Institute s director Dr Peter Martin MD But the latest scientific evidence indicates that in moderation 2 to 4 cups per day coffee may offer key health benefits ICS is the first research institute to study exactly how this may be Not much is known about this side of coffee because most studies have focused on caffeine but coffee

they finally settle down It s amazing how seemingly exhausted children get a sudden rush of energy when a parent mentions bedtime Yes getting them settled can be a challenge but once they re down usually sometime between 8 and 8 30 on a school night they go to sleep quickly and tend to stay in a deep sleep all night That according to researchers in Japan is a great sign when it comes to establishing healthy sleep patterns for later life Continue reading Posted by Calvin at 16 46 Tagged with bedtime Children evening echo Parenting parents research sleep Another one bites the dust Children Evening Echo Column holiday Rant No Responses Dec 31 2008 Image by Leorex via Flickr That s it then by the time you read this 2008 will be coming to a close In the wake of the Christmas festivities it s only natural for us to reflect on the events of the bygone year The ups and downs the side to sides the struggles and the joys the challenges and the achievements all done and dusted For us 2008 has been an interesting and productive year We got a lot of work done around the house Stuff we d been meaning to get around to for years is now finally sorted It s an old house so there will always be more to do but you get a great feeling of satisfaction from finally accomplishing the niggling little and not so little jobs that you keep putting off One of those jobs was to finally insulate the attic We finally got that done last month and what a difference it s made In a house with 10 ft ceilings keeping warm had always been a bit of a challenge now with the solid fuel

joined the pigeon in the drink I finally managed to fish him out He was still surprisingly perky all things considered and there were no broken bones but a close up look at his wounds confirmed my worst fears He wasn t going to make it I climbed back up the vertical bank Hello Guster chorused three little voices as I reached the top and in that moment Guster the wood pigeon became more than a soon to expire wildlife casualty he became one of the family I knew what was coming I was advocating a swift end to Guster s suffering but as usual I was outnumbered In the face of tears much vocal protestation and ludicrous ultimatums like if you kill him Daddy I think I might throw myself in the water and I ll never speak to you again I ended up carrying Guster back towards the car and a trip to the nearest wildlife rescue centre As I d predicted Guster never made it His valiant fight for life ended about twenty minutes later on the walk back to the car The girls were gutted I was relieved for the poor thing It s better that he died by nature proclaimed the little one earnestly between tears They insisted on bringing Guster home and giving him a proper burial so an hour or so later we were ushered into the back garden I dug a hole placed Guster s body wrapped in newspaper into it and the girls said their goodbyes and pushed the earth over him Guster the pigeon RIP I was the only one who d held Guster while he was alive so nobody noticed that the newspaper wrapped remains were considerably lighter than the living bird had been Later that evening as I
