of work done around the house Stuff we d been meaning to get around to for years is now finally sorted It s an old house so there will always be more to do but you get a great feeling of satisfaction from finally accomplishing the niggling little and not so little jobs that you keep putting off One of those jobs was to finally insulate the attic We finally got that done last month and what a difference it s made In a house with 10 ft ceilings keeping warm had always been a bit of a challenge now with the solid fuel range installed and the attic swathed in insulation it s veritably toasty and we re using less fuel The question that immediately springs to mind is why didn t we do this years ago the answer of course time money kids Somehow despite all the doom and gloom surrounding us I can t shake the feeling that 2009 will be a very positive year Folding banks collapsing economies and a global climate in turmoil notwithstanding I m feeling very upbeat about the coming year Which is unusual from a person who s response to the do you see the glass as half full or half empty question is typically What glass It s hard to pinpoint why but I m sure 2009 is going to be a really wonderful year Bizarre I know but there you go you heard it here first One of the things I m sure will endure into the new year and for many year s to come is the tendency to conduct completely useless research that reveals absolutely nothing of any tangible value Why do we keep pumping money we can ill afford to spend into studies that we really don

  • Living in Ireland: summer rain stops play! | Writing, life and other animals
12 August 2008 at 14 22 Having said all that we were meant to be going camping for a couple of nights on Sherkin Island with friends on Wednesday looks like the weather s going to scupper that plan too Jon says 13 August 2008 at 15 45 In fairness If Ireland was such a fab place as some think as a country or Cork as a City or any Irish City it would feature in the top 30 of the World s best places to live It doesn t and it isn t and probably never will As for nostalgic musings on rustic west Cork a la Alice Taylor mode Come on and wise up Do you or your kids want to grow up listeneing to that comaile mucker foul mouth disgusting drivel Do you wish alcohol fuelled manifest violence vandalism and socially unacceptable drunken whackery to be the order of your life Take a bus to Limerick via Cork and then then have a serious re think about life in Ireland a la Alice Taylor fantasy mode In general We make excuses all the time and fantasise that these problems aren t in our back yards We harbour nostalgic fantasies about some elyessian Ireland of yesteryear we pretend that we are transcendent culturally advanced and non mono culltural moving forward not backward Really Take a bus train extended trip and listen to the abject regression that we accept as culture Look at the drunkeness of our society See the filth of our weekended streets left in the wake of drunken yobs and mindless muckers whom penetrate the land like a soggy mist leaving a trail of destruction in their mindless wake Unlike our fantasy mucky island places like New Zealand Aus Canada Switzerland etc do actually figure in the top 30 We should stop making excuses for our violent mindless culture culchier and seriously consider another place to live Visit Switz or NZ Try Whangerai Gooogle Earth it See the photos Now compare the stats These are top 30 material And yes If we could remove the above foul stains in Ireland it might be a resonable place in Summer time if you put an umbrella over it margaretmartina says 13 August 2008 at 18 47 Jon Please do share with us where you do you live now if you find Ireland so bad im dying to know what country or area is it you find so great to live No one says Ireland is perfect sure what county is I live in Cork am from a farming background and have recently bought in the city and went to school in the city and I love it of course there are bad eggs can they not be found everywhere crime and anti social is a world wide phenomenon i m not making excuses for ireland i don t need to its my home and I Love it as do my friends and family the weather is out of our control I do remember fab fab summers when i was young ts in the last few years our climate has changed greatly which is a pity sept last year was lovely so fingers crossed for a late summer again this year As for the language drunkenness class problems you mention are you telling me places like New Zealand oz America don t have these issues wake up of course they do and I have seen it for myself same as here pockets of areas with youths or social drunkenness on nights out Crime etc people now are exposed and have the same influences on a world wide scale If your argument was on cost of living i would be a bit more inclined to agree with you on more recent years but suggesting anti social behaviour is at a different level here then other countries i cant where you are coming from M Calvin says 15 August 2008 at 1 46 Hi Jon Some of us don t have to Google Whangerai some of us have been there In fact have a hat hand made there that I use to ward off the West Cork rain works a treat As I said earlier in the discussion been there done that in lot s of places around the world and yet I CHOOSE West Cork as home over all of the places you mention Wonder why that is Couldn t be the climate that sucks Guess it must be something else jon says 18 August 2008 at 15 31 Did you listen to Liveline RTE1 today Host confirmed that social climate was under water and that Irish drunken foul mouth yobs had moved onto international holiday aircraft More evidence of the drunk and disorderly social Climate we pretend does not exist Has anyone taken a train Cork Limerick yet If someone is not living here because of dodgey phsical climate they cannot be living here for the dodgey social climate Perhaps it s for tax purposes and int l tax bank laws usually the case Perhaps too many Ireland s Own Alice Taylor fantasies abound Ireland is not like that It s a pint swill culture If not that then perhaps we are just afraid to emigrate Check out Mercer Top 20 Get out while you can It s never too late Listen to liveline RTE and get the full picture It s not nice It s not pleasant It is disgusting margaretmartina says 18 August 2008 at 15 48 Calvin wondering if you headed to Sherkin Island at the week end after all i know friday night was fairly bad weather but Saturday was really Fab weather thought of you and was wondering if you had gone camping we were in clon for the week end great time had really great week end were in the clogeen holiday homes a big gang of us and sat out for hours before going out saturday night really made the week end for us Calvin says 18 August 2008 at 16 23 Didn t make Sherkin in the end weather too unpredictable for camping Ended up on one of the little beaches beyond Unionhall on Saturday Had a wonderful day BBQ on the beach caught fish kids had a ball even went swimming Sunday yesterday wasn t so hot though lots of sogginess again Guess we were right about the camping Nothing worse than putting camping gear away in the rain margaretmartina says 18 August 2008 at 16 24 yuck too true still Saturday was a win glad to hear Calvin says 18 August 2008 at 16 28 Jon One man s meat and all that Not sure what your beef is with Ireland but it is your beef and certainly not mine Some of us are in fact very happy here Yes Ireland has its shortcomings yes I get frustrated with barmy politics the weather and some of the social issues you mention but none of those things are unique to Ireland and on balance I find far more good than bad So I guess we can agree to disagree and move on After all it wouldn t do if everyone wanted to live here the place would get far too crowded C Jon says 18 August 2008 at 22 34 Ignorance is bliss like bias and sometimes that isn t a bad thing Ignorance is healthy like bias one just must have one Ignorance is many things but Not knowledge on the best place to live Mercer don t rely on ignorance they rely on intelleigent 40pt national data many factors that make a place a people top 20 or not top 20 Nationmaster rely on more West Switz better than West Cork West NZ N better than West Cork Vancouver better than West Cork etc There are quite a few places better than West Cork and many more worse this doesn t mean west Cork is best It only means you may not be knowledgable enough to realise there are better places west warrandyte and so on A colleague of mine west Cork said he hated the fact that midges summer time make him itch and that loud exhaust pipes wake people up randomly in the night and that if if one could record the foul mouth language of tourist village Glengarriff he could not bare to live on idyllic Garnish Island So girls and boys it seems like La Gomera is far more interesting than West Cork according to NASA It seems like West Gigantes is far more interesting than West Cork according to NASA It seems like the key word that binds opinions on W Cork Limerick Moyross etc are non substantive and not collated by weather stats social stats related stats ie DYSFUNCTIONAL In The Extreme Admit that you might be affected effected or Irelands Own Alice Taylor fans or indeed that ignorance is bliss I like you might even be dis affected But let s not fool ourselves people Neither W Cork Cork Limerick Moyross etc is the best place to live Ask NASA Ask Mercer stat Ask any OAP They ought to know Calvin says 19 August 2008 at 0 14 or ask the Economist Intelligence Unit which in 2005 ranked Ireland at No 1 in the world in its Quality of Life Index WARNING links to aPDF file That s right no 1 it surprised the bejeysus out of most people living here I seem to recall The following year the West Cork Enterprise Board conducted an independent study based on similar empirical criteria within Ireland and guess what West Cork came out with one of the best Quality of Life scores in the country Take the two findings and draw your own conclusions The point being you can take statistics and wield them any way you like but at the end of the day it boils down to this if you don t like somewhere don t live there if you do well I don t think I ever said West Cork is the best place in the world for everybody of course it s not but I happen to believe that it IS the best place in the world for me and my family at this particular point in time As I think I ve already mentioned different people want different things At a guess I d hazard that West Cork and Ireland probably aren t right for you Jon but a lot of people who are far from ignorant happen to be very happy here You never did mention where you live did you Jon Just out of interest As for the charges of ignorance well we ll let s just let people read the posts and judge for themselves Jon says 19 August 2008 at 1 00 EIU stats valid 2005 for given profile at that time 3YRS ago NASA EIU Mercer Nationmaster etc and ancillary stats see att accurate relatively and the host of other stats that do not mention Cork Limerick Moyross etc and they do not even address crime ridden ireland But West Cork is hardly free from foul mouths loud pipes Is it Abounding in violence drunk disorderly behavior Cork County per cc index according to DDP stats ranks very high in drunk disorderly crimes Irel Crimes that statistically are likely to affect us all Shocking Intolerable Now You may make excuses and so might all of us but DPP stats do not lie nor do intl stats a la mode EIU Mercer NASA et al Listen to liveline RTE tomorrow Study Stats Word on street etc As for where I am from W Cork and as to where I live Alps neither I nor you nor others can escape the awful foul mouth pint swill culchie er camaile bland mindless indifference that both you and I and other s may wish to fantasise about and pretend does NOT exist It does It is disgusting Statistics do NOT lie per 2000 in tota um format see stats Is La Gomera better Is La Laguna better Is Lugarno better YES according to stats and that doesn t include Vancouver Zurich Canton etc Do you REALLY want to live in that WET soggy boggy mucky foul mouth pint swill agressive unruly violent mindless vandalous culchier If so with full respect stay in W Cork Limerick Moyross etc You might ESCAPE 1 day and good for you margaretmartina says 19 August 2008 at 9 14 Jon I have a feeling you re not really missed in W Cork you don t sound like a very nice person at all A lot of anger I am wondering do you remind them all of your views every time you come to west Cork to visit that must be a howl A Yawn comes to mind this is getting very tiresome and cheers for calling us ignorant and as if we know no better are not well educated well employed or are well travelled I can assure you I am We all have choice and in not being ignorant we do respect your choice each to their own Is it not polite to respect ours and our love of home Well to repeat myself no where in this world is perfect and we never said home was perfect but it is our love of home that keeps us here by choice Now on the Alps I may be wrong but do they not stretch from Austria and Slovenia through Italy Switzerland and Germany to France Please do share with us which country you have settled for Its funny but I have a friend here from the French Alps region She moved here for a better quality of life We are all heading to her wedding in French in a few weeks to a Cork lad So she seemed to find what she was looking for here in Cork x Calvin says 19 August 2008 at 9 57 Interestingly Jon is posting from an Edinburgh IP address so perhaps it s the Scottish Alps he s settled for Forgive me if I m mistaken here but don t the Scots have a bit of a reputation for drinking and swearing as well But then perhaps it s the balmy Scottish climate that appeals Don t get me wrong I ve absolutely nothing against Edinburgh or Scotland wonderful place to visit Just given the choice I personally would choose West Cork every time A lot of people would choose the other option of course That choice and diversity is all part of the rich and varied tapestry of humanity We want need and like different things long may that diversity continue Jon says 19 August 2008 at 17 07 Hi Calvin Yes Edin IP Working for festival 2 wks more I live 1hr ex Swiss Italy most of year and Masca winter Yes Scots as bad if not worse than Agreed about diversity etc For the record I actually like the natural setting of W Cork and have great affinity with it Nature wise it s up there if all the above as per prior msgs was removed W Cork would indeed be more suitable than it already is for some And in all relative accuracy I m addressing what s by and large outside rustic W Cork The negatives I quite rightly address are by and large the bigger towns and the weekend nontourist waste lands So you guys are prob outside the above and ensconced in the more rustic Alice Taylor type places I commend that and It must be truly amazing that you do not hear boy racers foul lang etc Inchageela Johnstown is like that Nice and Rustic Ballingeary GouganB etc Alas Glengarrif was invaded by midges boy racers drunks and foul mouths last time I visited Disgusting Unfit for both man beast You re obviously quite rustically removed from such dysfunction Well done As an irishman it actually saddens me no anger what I others last saw not just in GlenG It was so prolific even in Bantry Skibb We had to leave I admire people who are not affected by the above You clearly are not in ear shot of what I address And live in a more rustic rurality So next time your out and about and hear none of what I mention Enjoy it And girls as for reminding of views the sickness that permeates our naturally lovely land is no laughing matter and the disgust that I m sure you will witness next time in Urbanity is no howl But it s an Irish thing I suppose I like you will pretend it doesn t exist I have learned that much at least and I thank you for it Best regards wishes J 0035385 1273222 sms or email as per Jon says 20 August 2008 at 1 39 Margaretmartina Forgive ourselves I us ye you for your ye r defensive writing style But are you i we or We caps or e extra 1st or 3rd person s singular plural Are you ye a n other Siamese twins triplets singular or other On one note you it says i 1st person then you become uncertain on another you it say s we 3rd person s Are u a hybrid psychophant with pleasant leanings towards dysfunctional schizophrenia 1st 2nd 3rd or in France the road trip with the children had proved a remarkable success We d packed plenty into our trip and after the initial spell of inclement weather we d had our fair share of sunshine The kids had enjoyed themselves immensely and when the children are happy by extension so are Mum and Dad We were looking forward to a relaxing few days in France before getting the ferry back from Cherbourg to Rosslare Little did we know that we d never make the boat It happened all of a sudden One minute we were travelling along the road towards a town called Mont de Marsan the next the driver s side wheels touched the grass verge and everything went haywire My wife who was driving swerved back onto the road but overcompensated The car veered into the oncoming carriageway right into the path of a truck I remember grabbing the wheel and swerving us back onto our own side of the road then we lost control The car skidded first one way then the other before careening off a twelve foot bank into the ditch below At times like this the adrenalin kicks in your brain goes into overdrive and the world around you slows to a crawl Your senses become heightened and you notice everything in minute detail sights sounds smells touch everything In the passenger seat I was busy noticing the undergrowth rushing slowly towards the windscreen I braced myself for impact and then we hit with a sickening crunch I watched with detached interest as the front of the car folded in on itself like a cereal box being crushed for recycling My mind was on three things the children I was willing the car to stop so that I could look after them It finally came to rest and the world lurched back to normal speed The car at the garage where it was towed after the accident I quickly checked myself over Everything appeared to be where it should be and I wasn t in any immediate pain A glance at my wife told me that she was conscious and was busy unbuckling her seatbelt I followed her lead pushed open the door and went to check on the girls In the back seat the three year old was crying in her car seat which was a good sign She was fine One of the twins who was sitting next to her was fine too apart from a few abrasion marks from her seatbelt Then I saw my other daughter in the back row her head slumped against the window blood trickling from her nose Between her closed eyes a rapidly growing bulge was turning a violent purple blue colour My heart lurched and for a moment I feared the worst but when I spoke to her she opened her eyes was able to talk to me and could move her arms legs fingers and toes After one night in a French hospital she was discharged with nothing more serious than a slight fracture to her left elbow Our insurance company flew us home a few days later leaving the remains of the car in France It had been a horrific end to what had been an otherwise fantastic trip but it could have been so much worse We re just glad to be home with everyone in one piece Technorati Tags parenting travel children France car crash Posted by Calvin at 14 43 I need a holiday Children Evening Echo Column Parenting Travel Writing No Responses Jun 28 2007 Published in the WOW supplement of the Evening Echo 27 06 2007 La Beule is a long established seaside resort on the Atlantic coast of France It has an incredibly long beach 9 km somebody told me I took their word for it lined with multi storey apartment blocks and hotels with the odd casino thrown in for good measure Like most anything that sits on the edge of the Atlantic for any length of time these buildings looked shabby and in need of maintenance It reminded me of the North Wales seaside towns of my youth perhaps a little more affluent What reminded me of North Wales even more was the weather It was raining billowing black clouds rolling in behind massive breakers The rain didn t stop the kite surfers though they were leaping about in the surf with abandon carried on massive jumps by the gale force winds Between squalls we perched on a bench on the seafront sharing out the bounty we d picked up a little earlier at the supermarket Bread pâté cheese salami and sundry other things the French are rightly famous for It was wonderful fare I have to say and the children were in good spirits despite the inclement weather It had been raining since we d arrived in France two days earlier and after a couple of soggy nights camping we were waiting to meet my wife s sister and her family They live in Tours about two and a half hours drive inland up the Loire valley and have a holiday home in La Beule It doesn t take long for camping in the rain to dampen your spirits and I for one was looking forward to sleeping in a proper bed again Waiting isn t something the children are fond of at the best of times In the rain it can be pure torture and in the rain abroad after a long drive and two nights of camping it s even worse I finally relented and put a DVD on the laptop for them For a while peace reigned while we suffered through the world s worst ever animated version of Cinderella It had come free with one of the Sunday papers and I d thrown it in the bag for emergency use only This was an emergency The following day dawned bright and blustery It was a massive improvement on the
