  • Dell Inspiron 640M on the way | Writing, life and other animals
gà 3490CT for work on the go and it s been brilliant but frustratingly slow at times After looking around I finally opted for a Dell Inspiron 640m which should be arriving later today with a bit of luck The Inspiron 640m power and productivity in a portable package It comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor I opted for an upgraded to the 1 83Ghz option for more processing power and free double memory giving me a whopping 2GB of RAM to play with I ve also opted for the optional 9 cell battery that will according to the spec give me a massive 8 8 hours of cable free computing on a single charge It will be much bulkier than the Portà gà of course but should still be quite a neat package considering the relatively high spec I ll post a review here once I ve had chance to play er work with it Technorati Tags computers Dell small business technology Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 9 44 2 Responses to Dell Inspiron 640M on the way Calvin says 11 May 2007 at 12 20 Still hasn t arrived as of 13 20 looks like I might have to wait until Monday Arrrrggggghhhhh Are you an internet addict Writing for life says 10 January 2009 at 13 46 that means I m always on On the laptop on the netbook on the WiFi enabled Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your Comment You may use these HTML tags and attributes a href title abbr title acronym title b blockquote cite cite code del datetime em i

to a conveniently unsecured wireless network just to check e mail or a profile page or twitter or whatever It s a slippery slope So I m thinking of starting a new group perhaps on facebook lol welcome to Internet Addicts Anonymous IAA To kick things off I ll go first My name is Calvin Jones and I m a always on internet oholic Admitting it is the hardest part go on try it for yourself in the comments below it s cathartic I feel better already Posted by Calvin at 3 21 Tagged with Addiction broadband Internet Social network Disconnected Comment Computing Evening Echo Column Rant Technology Writing 1 Response Nov 24 2008 Image via Wikipedia I sat watching the depressingly slow advance of the little blue progress bar on my laptop screen Downloading the 150 odd e mails that had accrued in my mailboxes over the last 24 hours was taking an age and as for checking the various websites that help keep me connected and up to date forget it On Friday evening we unexpectedly lost our fixed wireless broadband connection One minute it was there the next it was gone Like most broadband connections in Ireland it was an overpriced and under performing beast but it also put a wonderful world of information and connectivity at our fingertips Now it was gone and we were back to the excruciating crawl of a dial up connection You don t realise how much you ve come to rely on something until it s taken away I can t count how many times a day I d look up a website do a quick Google search to double check a fact go online to communicate with friends family and business contacts and to generally stay connected with the world around me Going back to dial up was like stepping back into the dark ages I had to remind myself that this was in fact still the reality for a rediculously high number of households in rural Ireland No broadband it took a while for the implications to sink in My first instinct was to go online do some research and explore other options but of course I couldn t That s when it hit me how could we run our home based businesses without internet access The answer not very well at all Everything about the businesses depends on the internet the websites e mail payments banking accounts Even the business phone line is delivered online Dial up simply isn t an option for us any more Unfortunately we live in what can only be described as Europe s digital backwater While Ireland has made great strides to improve broadband availability over recent years we typically pay through the nose for much slower connections than our European peers and an unacceptable proportion of Irish households still can t get a broadband connection at all It s curious that we find ourselves in this position as Europe s digital poor

  • Kayaking with a seal entourage off West Cork | Writing, life and other animals
this world Early the next morning we heard the seals calling out around High Island and Seal Rock it was flat calm so two of us decided to hop in the kayaks to investigate The other island turned out to be further away than it looked but we reached it without incident and headed around to the ocean facing side through a channel between the rocks That s where we encountered the seals There were a dozen or more grey seals Halichoerus grypus on the rocks As we passed them they entered the water and swam up for a closer look They ranged in size from cute youngsters through mid sized females to a couple of enormous bulls The size of the bulls made me nervous at first but they were more curious than anything else They d take it in turns to pop up in front of the kayaks and lift their heads well out of the water for a good look before flipping over with a spectacular splash and disappearing into the depths The seals stayed with us as we paddled along obviously enjoying some sort of seal game that we weren t privy to We progressed along the spectacular cliffs on the ocean facing side of the island but my attention was mainly on the horizon It s big whale season off Ireland s south coast and I was looking for something specific Suddenly I spotted it a plume of water vapour erupting from the sea towards the horizon rising vertically before being carried sideways by the offshore breeze then another and another Fin whales Balaenoptera physalus There was no way we were ever going to attempt to head out to sea on kayaks for a closer encounter with these oceanic leviathans but it was a thrill just to see the tell tale blows and know they were nearby The second largest creature ever to have lived on earth was swimming about a scant few kilometres off shore and here we were in the same vicinity paddling along in ten foot inflatable kayaks It was an amazing feeling Our seal entourage stayed with us as we rounded High Island and headed back across open water to our base on Rabbit Island It had been a remarkable and memorable wildlife encounter an experience that will stay etched in my memory long after the aching in my muscles has subsided Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 13 59 Tagged with Balaenoptera physalus Fin Whale grey seal Halichoerus grypus kayaking kayaks West Cork 2 Responses to Kayaking with a seal entourage off West Cork Jack Kelleher says 2 November 2010 at 7 18 You ve energized me to get a kayak and get it in the water Beautifully written Calvin says 26 January 2011 at 23 57 Thanks Jack my

  • Halloween in West Cork: a real scary goat story | Writing, life and other animals
to appease the inevitable onslaught of horrible little monsters as evening descended It was dark by the time we pulled into the driveway We live out in the sticks which is to say that dark here is properly dark not the softly lit parody of darkness that passes for night in the city The monsters would be coming soon I thought As we got out of the car the girls noticed what looked like sheep poo on the driveway in the glow from the outside light They headed off into the murk looking for the perpetrators expecting to find a few sheep grazing the back lawn Moments later they ran shrieking out of the night A dark menacing shape loomed out of the darkness behind them It was a big black billy goat and he looked none too pleased The girls and their mum ran inside I decided to stay outside and show this goat who was boss He was having none of it and stood his ground This was like the billy goats gruff story and I was feeling more troll like by the second The goat lowered his head which had been up around chest height to begin with and pushed me hard in the stomach Backwards I went Luckily someone had cut back his horns and he didn t have a run up so there was no real damage done but this was one strong animal Before I knew what was happening all 16 stone of me had been pushed through the front door into the hall In the confined space the stench of amorous goat was overwhelming We now had a disgruntled powerful and very smelly billy goat inside the house Not good Thinking quickly I backed out of the front door again trying to coax the goat to follow me Grudgingly it did and as soon as it was outside I doubled back closing the door behind me I breathed a sigh of relief and then the handle started to move The goat was trying to let himself back in I turned the key in the lock The goat which the girls had by now christened Jasper disappeared around the house I made my way to the back door and there was Jasper giving that handle a try too This animal was well and truly possessed We were safe for now but the shopping including that night s dinner was still in the car the girls were all geared up to go trick or treating and we were due at the school Halloween Disco in less than an hour The goat would have to go I eyed the hatchet next to the range but no I d have to think of something else I started ringing around the neighbours to see if anyone knew who owned the wayward beast No joy As I hung up I looked up to find a horse staring at me through the window This was getting ridiculous Luckily unlike Jasper
