  • Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, in Ireland | Writing, life and other animals
do business in a socially responsible way to go that extra mile to be a good corporate citizen and to look after the people and the environment it interacts with It s about businesses looking outside the corporate box and acknowledging their broader responsibility to society as a whole Which all sounds very laudable But are businesses really doing it Plenty of high profile Irish organisations profess to be That Google list I mentioned earlier contains links to comprehensive CSR Statements from the ESB Coillte Tesco Ireland KPMG Repak and others But are they just words or is the concept of CSR really resonating with organisations and punching through the profit skewed view of Irish CEOs How many employees for example really and truly believe their employers are putting their best interests ahead of the corporate bottom line Or that management would opt to go with a more costly supplier simply because they could demonstrate better environmental credentials Would your HiPPO Highest Paid Person in the Organisation choose to forsake profit for the greater good Some might answer yes but my guess is that the vast majority would have to say no Or at least not yet But that could be changing The pressure on businesses to become more environmentally and socially responsible is growing all the time thanks largely to the high profile of environmental issues surrounding climate change Higher consumer and employee awareness of these issues and of how corporate entities are responding to them means that addressing them is moving out of the realm of positive spin and PR and is fast becoming an economic imperative People are demanding more accountability from the companies they do business with and the companies they choose to work for These days if a company can t demonstrate that its taking

  • climate change Ireland | Writing, life and other animals
At this stage the nay sayers who claim that humanity is not the cause of climate change and there are still plenty of well respected intelligent and knowledgeable individuals sitting in that camp have been well and truly shot down and it is widely acknowledged now that we are if not the direct cause of climate change at least contributing to and accelerating it Climate change is happening there s no doubt about that Whatever you believe is causing it it s a no brainer that our unsustainable plundering of the planet s natural resources has to stop Nature you see is very good at balance and we ignore that balance at our peril Life all life is inextricably linked to its environment Upset the balance of that environment as we ve been doing for decades and once its built in sinks and buffers have been used up nature will restore its equilibrium and from our perspective the results are unlikely to be pretty All of the indicators are screaming that nature s capacious tolerances are all but exhausted If we re to have any hope of averting the backlash or at least reducing its impact we really have to act now and act decisively And there again there is a problem The message from various climate change campaigners is all about cutting back reducing eliminating We need to tighten our belts stop using so much curtail our extravagant lifestyles All of which makes perfect sense but it s hardly an appealing message Make people believe that they have to sacrifice something in order to make a difference to the climate and you re fighting a loosing battle Sure you ll get groups of enthusiastic long haired activists with flowing skirts and goatie beards who smell faintly of lentils and essential oils to sign up People who are doing these things anyway will nod sagely and bask in the affirmation that they re making a difference But let s face it that s a niche market and to have any sort of impact at all the climate change message has to reach out to the mainstream Like trying to sell anything the emphasis needs to be on benefits Don t tell people to cut back eliminate and reduce highlight how changing the way they do things will make their lives better in all sorts of ways now and in the future At the end of the day we re selfish beings our modus operandi is typically WIIFM what s in it for me If the answer is nothing then unfortunately that s exactly what most of us will do nothing Technorati Tags climate change global warming Evening Echo column Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 15 07 One Response to Changing the Climate Change message New environmental blog Writing for

and in an effort to appeal to their target markets big companies are quick to adopt the veneer of environmental propriety Of course it s not just their customers that these organisations are trying to appeal to by turning over a new greener leaf Today s well educated highly skilled employees are ever more conscious of the impact their activities are having on the world around them While green credentials don t necessarily dictate a candidates choice of employer just yet they are certainly starting to factor into the decision for a growing number of bright young candidates The popularisation of environmental issues brought about by climate change has also spawned a slew of new jobs and lifted others from relative obscurity and thrust them into the limelight One of the most visible examples of this is in the media A few years ago your average environmental correspondent would be wheeled out once in a blue moon Today they re hitting the front page and prime time airwaves on a practically daily basis It s the same elsewhere in industry academia and across the public and private sector environmentally related positions carry more weight have a higher profile attract better salaries and offer improved career prospects No matter which way you look at it there s little doubt that the environment is now big business and it s growing all the time Which begs the question when is Ireland inc going to cop on and realise that to maintain growth in our economy preserve jobs and generally continue along the prosperous path we ve all become accustomed to we need to take environmental issues much more seriously In the past our environmental record has been woeful and current agricultural and industrial practices coupled with a widespread apathy when it comes

  • Solar paint could reduce carbon emissions | Writing, life and other animals
a solar powered paint which could theoretically result in warehouses whose entire surface area could convert solar energy into electricity Steel sheets are painted rapidly in steel mills by passing them through rollers A consortium led by Swansea University UK hopes to use that process to cover steel sheets with a photovoltaic paint at up to 40 square metres per minute The paint will take advantage of dye sensitised solar cells They re less efficient than conventional silicone based cells but are also much cheaper and can be applied to surfaces as a liquid We should see a commercial cell in two and a half years Dr David Worsley leader of the Swansea team told New Scientist There are still plenty of obstacles to overcome but it s an intriguing technology with potentially enormous global potential for harnessing the sun s energy Technorati Tags Environment solar power paint New Scientist climate change Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 21 14 Tagged with carbon footprint Climate Change Environment global warming solar power Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your Comment You may use these HTML tags and attributes a href title abbr title acronym title b blockquote cite cite code del datetime em i q cite s strike strong Name required E mail required URI Notify me of follow up comments by email Notify me of new posts by email Ireland s ongoing broadband debacle New environmental blog Subscribe to feed Get posts in your favourite feed reader Now blogging about Ireland s Wildlife and Nature Read Calvin s writing on Ireland s leading Wildlife and Nature blog Ireland s Wildlife on
