  • Here comes the rain again: West Cork Summer | Writing, life and other animals
be anywhere else in the world but for the most part soggy wet dull and bloody cold There s a song that could easily be the West Cork summer anthem Its pretty much perpetually stuck in my head from the end of May until mid September As soon as the familiar scattered showers of spring elongate into the protracted solid periods of unrelenting rain that are the hallmark of a West Cork Summer it s there I guess I should at least be thankful that the song is bearable Here Comes The Rain Again by The Eurythmics could this be the ideal West Cork summer anthem I LOVE living and working in West Cork and feel very privileged to do so but please please please can we have a little bit of sustained sunshine and some slightly warmer evenings Lighting the fire at the end of June because you ve got frostbite in your extremities is frankly no fun at all Be Sociable Share Tweet Share this Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to share on Google Opens in new window Related Posted by Calvin at 9 44 Tagged with Eurythmics music rain Summer Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your Comment You may use these HTML tags and attributes a href title abbr title acronym title b blockquote cite cite code del datetime em i q cite s strike strong Name required E mail required URI Notify me of follow up comments by email Notify me of new posts by email Ireland s Wildlife Blog Site Finally Live Subscribe to feed Get posts in your favourite feed reader Now blogging about Ireland s Wildlife and Nature Read Calvin s writing on Ireland s leading Wildlife and Nature blog Ireland

  • Climate Change | Writing, life and other animals
CO2 emissions global warming Video Geological time graphic from USGS Animals Climate Change Environment No Responses May 29 2008 Very brief post just came across this really cool public domain Graphical Representation of Geologic Time from the USGS and thought it was worth sharing here enjoy You ll find more on geological time from Wikipedia here Posted by Calvin at 16 00 CSR the new buzzword of corporate Ireland Business Career Moves Column Climate Change Environment Writing No Responses Apr 16 2008 Published in the Career Moves section of The Evening Echo on Monday 14 April 2008 CSR when I first heard it I thought it was another one of those far fetched American crime dramas Then I discovered it was an acronym for Corporate Social Responsibility and remained none the wiser So I Googled it interesting aside did you know that the name Google was an accidental misspelling of the word googol the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes and was promptly presented with 4 530 000 results on everything anyone could ever want to know about Corporate Social Responsibility First stop Wikipedia that font of online knowledge which informed me that CSR is a concept whereby organizations consider the interests of society by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers suppliers employees shareholders communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations This obligation is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation and sees organizations voluntarily taking further steps to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large When I got my breath back I read it again CSR then is basically a commitment by an organisation to do business in a socially responsible way to go that extra mile to be a good corporate citizen and to look after the people and the environment it interacts with It s about businesses looking outside the corporate box and acknowledging their broader responsibility to society as a whole Which all sounds very laudable But are businesses really doing it Plenty of high profile Irish organisations profess to be That Google list I mentioned earlier contains links to comprehensive CSR Statements from the ESB Coillte Tesco Ireland KPMG Repak and others But are they just words or is the concept of CSR really resonating with organisations and punching through the profit skewed view of Irish CEOs How many employees for example really and truly believe their employers are putting their best interests ahead of the corporate bottom line Or that management would opt to go with a more costly supplier simply because they could demonstrate better environmental credentials Would your HiPPO Highest Paid Person in the Organisation choose to forsake profit for the greater good Some might answer yes but my guess is that the vast majority would have to say no Or at least not yet But that could be changing The pressure on businesses to become more

  • Summer | Writing, life and other animals
summer has been ridiculous No wonder the travel agents are seeing a surge in business It s enough to make anyone want to hop on a plane But back to the darkness it s getting properly dark much earlier Yet another reminder that we re running out of summer with just the occasional glimpse of sunshine Perched out beyond the western edge of the time zone we tend to enjoy a little bit more light than our neighbours to the east when the clouds don t obscure it that is In midsummer I can be outside at 11pm and there s still a glow in the sky to the west It s not light but it s not quite dark either more of an elongated twilight But despite a daylight extension courtesy of our peripheral geography the nights are definitely starting to draw in Like everything else that life throws up this presents yet another dilemma for parents With the school term literally around the corner do you start to re establish school time routine and get the kids to bed earlier or do you let them stay up later to wring every ounce of potential out of the rapidly evaporating holidays Continue reading Posted by Calvin at 23 42 Tagged with back to school Evening Echo Column Parenting Summer West Cork The end of summer Children Evening Echo Column family West Cork No Responses Sep 02 2009 Column from 19 08 09 Image via Wikipedia House martins whirl and swoop overhead making the most of a brief spell of sunshine to feed themselves up before the long journey ahead They re gathering now in large numbers preparing for a migration that will take them across Europe to sub Saharan Africa for the winter After the summer we ve had I wish I could join them Soon the swallows will follow suit the hedgehogs will intensify their hedgerow foraging before settling down to hibernate squirrels will horde caches of food blackberries will ripen It can all mean only one thing summer is already drawing to a close But nature isn t the only thing telling us that things are about to change Parents the length and breadth of the nation will have noticed other signs As the new school term approaches the kids start getting restless realising that their long weeks of freedom are coming to an end It affects parents too conscious that there s not much of the holidays left we rush to cram in all the things we ve been putting off over the summer break Last week for example we found ourselves on Sherkin Island putting up the tent in weather that was let s face it marginal at best It was certainly a far cry from camping nirvana but we d promised the girls and after letting much of the summer slip by waiting for a break in the weather we suddenly realised that time was running out We panicked packed and headed for Baltimore
