    ardent sanglot qui roule d âge en âge et qui vient mourir au bord de votre éternité glühend Seufzer die durch alle Zeiten branden vergehend an den Ufern deiner Ewigkeiten Baudelaire Les phares Die Leuchtfeuer Are these impassioned sobs that through the ages roll And die away upon the shore of your Eternity Baudelaire Beacons transl by William Aggeler It has been a while since these lines were sent to me from Paris Jardin du Luxembourg where the monument of Charles Baudelaire can be found They were my inspiration to work on Baudelaire No beginning and no end The shore of eternity an invitation to travel If there is something like a destination it is not only Baudelaire s Paris but it is the foreign unknown landscape of Baudelaire s soul it is the voyage that counts never the arrival The beacons are shining but will they warrant entry into the safety of the harbour When the chasm separating the self from the world seems unbridgeable there is a subjective bridge imagination Imagination has the right to be wild the scintillating nature of imbalance turns into the spark of creativity The tightrope walk across the chasm between imagination and reality also creates moments of crystal clarity that have the power to provide order in chaos Fear of reality rejection of what is normal or common often drives Baudelaire into the realm of the unreal Although in Le spleen de Paris he devotes himself particularly to daily life a daily life coloured by n importe où hors du monde anywhere out of this world This cosmos is absurd paradoxical illogical Time and again his poetry overwhelms me yes life and death are lovers n est ce pas The 11 territories Baudelaire chooses are paradigmatic of his nightly travels into the land of delusion a room that changes its face the loved one s hair the devil s livingroom the city brimming over with people drunkenness the night poetry all of them travelogues of journeys through the world of the poet Destination inconnue Music fathoms the sky Baudelaire Baudelaire quartet 5 string cello percussion 2 speaking voices The music reflects Baudelaire s language the symbiosis of sound and time corresponds to the synaesthetic phenomena the harsher German and softer French languages serve as paired opposites In the foreground one finds temporal elements rhythm metre beat tempo rubato In tonal terms the darker modes are dominant which could influence the perception of time What is real and what imaginary time The instrumental combination of cello and percussion provides the sea for the texts on which the soul and its desires are moving roaming wandering like Baudelaire s eternally sailing boats Baudelaire s sub worlds e g A hemisphere in your hair Un hémisphère dans une chevelure The clock L horloge are positioned in over tone and micro tone constructions and sound bodies which can be formed merely by a focused relaxed bowing technique Aimlessness and flight are captured in the music by fugato

    Meltdown and is the first one done for video and live music The piece combines at 42 minutes of textural abstract video with abstract electronic live music For the video part of Meltdown some sequences of an old b w film by the french philospoher Guy Debord were digitally reprocessed and resynthesized where the reprocessing refers to ideas Debord used in his original film He called this technique détournement the recontextualisation of various elements of other films TV advertising etc to create new combinations and open new insights being built out of these detourned elements The electronic live music part of the piece does reflect the textural nature of the visual elements but still has to be much more than background music for the visuals It does develop a life of its own and raises the stimulus of the observer in a significant way by creating a dense atmosphere Meltdown has first been presented at the Moving Closer Festival in Warsaw Poland in June 2007 Bernhard Loibner live electronics processed bass guitar videoprojection Clementine Gasser cello Miko aj Trzaska saxophone bass clarinet music by Bernhard Loibner in collaboration with Clementine Gasser Miko aj Trzaska Performances 08 march 2009 Festival artacts
