  • Can a Placebo Cure Your Migraine?
foods nitrate containing foods nuts chocolate dairy products and red wine are a few examples that may bring on an attack In the United States more than 37 million people suffer from migraines and for many of those people each migraine may last for at least four hours How 66 people responded to drug treatments and placebos over the course of seven different episodes was studied Each patient was asked to describe their headache pain and symptoms at 30 minutes and two hours after an attack They were then given six packets in three sets of two pills as follows the first pair of pills was spun positively and labeled Maxalt rizatriptan a type of migraine medication the second pair was spun negatively and labeled placebo the final pair of pills was given no spin at all and labeled Maxalt or placebo Contrary to what the patients were told or how the packets of pills were labeled each set of pills always contained a Maxalt pill and a placebo Participants were then asked to document their pain It was discovered that in every patient they experienced better relief when they had been given a more positive spin on a packet of pills It did not matter if the pill taken was an effective drug or a placebo Our discovery showing that subjects reports of pain were nearly identical when they were told that an active drug was a placebo as when they were told that a placebo was an active drug demonstrates that the placebo effect is an unacknowledged partner for powerful medications Kaptchuk stated In layman s terms this apparently is another case of it s all in your head The therapeutic benefit of placebos is a great idea that can be further researched in many other areas It

  • Meditation Increases Brain Activity - Cliffside Malibu Blog
meditation focus is centered on one thing such as breathing or heartbeat suppressing attention to anything else Non directive meditation uses a technique that after relaxing allows the mind to wander freely and effortlessly wherever the mind wishes to go The Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU the University of Oslo and the University of Sydney are now studying how the brain works during different kinds of meditation When we practice meditation our brain processes more thoughts and feelings than when we are simply relaxing concluded a coalition of researchers The study indicates that nondirective meditation allows for more room to process memories and emotions than during concentrated meditation Fourteen people with extensive experience in different forms of meditation were observed while using concentrative meditation non directive meditation and just resting Scientists were surprised to find greater brain activity when the brain was not doing anything specific and activity increased in the same area where thoughts and feelings are processed This area of the brain has its highest activity when we rest It represents a kind of basic operating system a resting network that takes over when external tasks do not require our attention It is remarkable that a mental task like nondirective meditation results in even higher activity in this network than regular rest says Davanger a neuroscientist and co author of the study Mindfulness Zen meditative drumming Chakra Buddhist and Transcendental are popular forms of meditation with their own unique techniques However they all have the similar purpose of creating a more peaceful stress free self awareness for better mental health and concentration It is important for science to investigate the benefits of meditation and understand exactly how it works One thing is currently clear meditation stimulates the brain http www sciencedaily com releases 2014 05 140515095545

  • Binge Drinking Prevents Wound Healing - Cliffside Malibu Blog
many patients and understand delayed or difficult healing difficulties in some patients Katherine A Radek PhD and research colleagues from Loyola University Chicago published their results The study showed for the first time that binge alcohol exposure reduces the amount of white blood cells that chew up bacteria and debris This defect in part makes the wound more likely to be infected by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus The study also found that binge alcohol exposure impaired the production of a protein that recruits macrophages to the wound site Binge alcohol also reduced levels of another key component of the immune system known as CRAMP a type of small protein present in the outermost layer of the skin the epidermis These small proteins called antimicrobial peptides kill bacteria and recruit macrophages and other immune system cells to the wound site Currently 20 to 40 of patients hospitalized in the United States have issues with alcohol abuse The risk of serious infection of wounds and even death is twice as likely to occur when patients were binge drinkers They also had higher re admission rates than patients who did not abuse alcohol Binge drinkers were defined in the study as those who drank at least twice the legal limit along with a repeating pattern of excessive drinking followed by a period of no drinking The possibility to help reduce the healing time of a large number of patients by understanding alcohol s negative influence on wound healing is welcome news Binge drinking is dangerous and often a hidden problem so consider sharing this message to help spread the warning http medicalxpress com news 2014 04 binge drinkers slower wounds html Search for Categories Categories Select Category Abuse Acupuncture Addiction Addiction Recovery Addiction Stories Addiction to Pharmaceuticals Addiction Treatment and Program Resources
