required to follow Tempers flared and unfortunately relations were never fully repaired Living in a house that s having extensive work done to it is not something I d recommend to anyone it s just taxing as hell on the nerves 5 Your dog is enormous What kind is it Okie is a French mastiff called a Dogue de Bordeaux They are fairly rare but were admitted into the AKC last year in the Miscellaneous class so in time I m sure they ll be more common He s just turned one year old last week he has a lot of growing yet to do He ll likely be somewhere around 140 lbs when he s done He s great fun and as gentle as a lamb but he DOES snore and drool A lot LH NOTE yesterday in the park I was talking to Steve when Okie shook her head and her drool flew right into my mouth I d be remiss if I didn t mention our other dog The Veal She s a Boxer 10 5 years old I can t say enough good things about her and her breed in general if anyone is looking for an athletic fun loving good natured easy keeping companion think about a Boxer Check out www boxerrescue com or www secondchanceboxer com 6 Favorite place to eat in the neighborhood I d probably go with Smoke Joint the BBQ is excellent and the owners are great guys who know how to make you feel welcome and appreciated Same goes for Cafe Martino on Myrtle we go there for breakfast on the weekends and the owners treat us like old friends I can t overstate how much that makes a difference to me good friendly service We find many places treat us like they re doing us a favor by serving us they rarely get a second chance We also like the food and atmosphere at Luz and we take out from Los Pollitos ands Castros pretty frequently We went to Bonita this weekend and it was very good as well I m sure we ll be back 7 What do you most wish would open in the area I could fill a book but the short list is Grocery with fresh produce and baked goods not necessarily a gourmet place but a decent clean greengrocer I know the wife wants fresh cut flowers too Would love a gym we joined Fitness Academy just weeks before it closed Crunch is a bit of a hike Also I dream about a restaurant a simple place maybe just slightly more upmarket than an average diner I m thinking about the equivalent of an EJ s or Veselka maybe Someplace to sit and have a burger or something after 8 PM What gives with the only diners in this neighborhood closing so early 8 As an artist do you feel the neighborhood is conducive to creativity Do you worry that artists will be forced to leave due to rising prices Well the art school s presence isn t felt as strongly as I d hoped it would be But I do see creativity everywhere that s New York I see it in handpainted shop signs and xeroxed yard sale flyers and graffiti It s everywhere and I derive inspiration from everything at least i try to but I m an illustrator which means I m a commercial artist I m often most inspired by a paycheck and or a deadline Since I moved to NY I ve witnessed an increasing lack of interest in or sympathy for creatives NY has become a playground for wealthy suburbanites who have done their best to reshape the city in their image The small designers from Waukeegan who would move to NY and open a dress shop on the LES who can do that anymore Who can afford to when there s always a Chuck E Cheese or Radio Shack looking to expand their empire Ultimately though I dream NY s inhospitable attitude toward the people that made it what it was will backfire and there will be a creative diaspora Places like Kansas City and Dayton OH will find more artists living in their midst while NYC is populated solely by bankers entertainment lawyers and celebrity chefs 9 Are you involved with SONYA If so how can a local artist align with the organization and participate in the annual SONYA Stroll I am not as I mentioned above I m a commercial artist so most of my work is of little interest to art enthusiasts To my discredit I ve never taken the time to learn much about SONYA 10 If you were a flavor of ice cream what would you be and why I had to enlist some help on this one Sofie says Rocky Road because you ve got crispy bits and soft bits Long pause And you re always sweet Awww Thanks Steve Steve Wacksman www houseowax com This entry was posted in interview on November 29 2006 by lesterhead No New Cafe YET on St James 2 with loud conversations and train noise It just seemed so out of place in the G station But in a good way The G platform is normally fairly quiet and it was nice to hear the music echoing through the station A peaceful way to start the morning I wanted to talk to him but didn t want to disrupt his performance Know him Send him our way so we can chat with him He wasn t there today I was Myrtle Leave a reply When I first moved to the Hill Karen s Body Beautiful resided in a tiny storefront on Clinton Avenue north of Myrtle I was thrilled to see her move to an exponentially larger site on Myrtle earlier this year the store is spacious peaceful and warm and really makes sense on our ever changing Myrtle Ave The absolute coolest thing about Karen s store is the fact that she creates ALL of her products right there on site A modern kitchen sits directly behind the front counter allowing shoppers to watch her work her magic Getting to know Karen When did the store first open I know it was originally in a different location We opened the first store in February 2004 and the current location our expansion in Feb 2006 How did you learn to make your own beauty products My friends and I tried it once and nothing turned out correctly My husband and I spent our 2003 summer vacation from teaching High School History learning how to make personal care products We bought books and ingredients and did lots of experimentation We signed the lease on our original location on Clinton Ave in November 2003 Since we were still teaching at the time it took us 2 months to make enough products to stock the store and we opened in Feb 2004 It was very exciting because we taught at the same school in the history department we would come home make shower gel shampoos body butters etc and drive them over to the store every day Out of the experience making the products off site at home and hauling them to the store did we decided that it would be wonderful to put the kitchen in the store to streamline our production and we thought the customers would get kick out of actually seeing the products being made Do you live in the neighborhood If so how long have you been here I live in Bed Stuy I ve lived there for 2 years What have been some of the challenges in owning your own business in Brooklyn On of the challenges is maintaining a daily production schedule to keep up the our internet and in store demands Since we make all of our products from scratch in the store we have to be open daily making products in order to fill internet orders and keep the store stocked It takes alot of work and time to hand make and package thousands of soaps lotions candles etc Favorite place to eat in the neighborhood My favorite place to eat is ABistro on Carlton and Myrtle The Senegalese Fried Chicken and French Toast on Sunday Brunch are FABULOUS What would you love to see open in Clinton Hill There are sooo many things Myrtle Ave needs A few more restaurants including a vegetarian one and bars are necessary to generate more foot traffic to support businesses like a butcher shop flower shop clothing stores gourmet fruit and vegetable grocery store and bakery Any insider info on what else will be opening on Myrtle A new hair salon that caters to white hair will be opening soon on Myrtle between Waverly and Washington I also know that several flower shops and a butcher are very interested in opening on Myrtle I see the shop is quite roomy Do you ever offer classes seminars or events We have KBB Spa Days where a masseuse and an esthetician come in to do spa treatments birthday parties and seminars on health and beauty What s your most popular product Our Body Scrubs are most popular They are very moisturizing they exfoliate soften and leave you with brand new skin If you were a flavor of ice cream what flavor would you be and why Hmmm

have tons of flavor not just heat Devil s Doodad will keep for up to a year in the fridge Will the Devil s Doodad empire expand Matt says it mainly depends on how his pepper crop does each year At this point he only sells his sauce at the Fort Greene Farmer s Market and at his job and doesn t turn a profit though he breaks even Matt will likely be at the Farmer s Market again this Saturday though he says his supplies are running low So get there early if you want the Doodad You can also send him an email with hot sauce in the subject line if you would like to reserve a bottle or get on Greene SetSpeed reports on the turtle esque progress of a new BBQ joint opening where the Cambodian place used to be as well as the irish pub slated to open next to Le Bagel Delight This place was advertising broadcasting World Cup games and it s STILL not open Maybe they meant the 2008 World Cup He ponders whether the pub points to the Murray Hill ification of the hood God I hope not I wonder how this ll fit in with the neighbors and Moe s The BBQ place definitely seems like a good choice for the area Both Clintoncentric and Brooklyn Record have clued us in on the former Italian restaurant on DeKalb that s been undergoing renovations It s slated to be Bonita YESSSSSS I do admit to the area already having some stellar Mexican Pequena Los Pollitos but Bonita will be significantly closer to me than the other two Depending on the quality of the guac it might be tacked on to my list of regular dining options FYI the original is in Williamsburg My bad the pub and BBQ are both on South Elliott near Lafayette Bonita is on DeKalb across from iCi This entry was posted in dining fort greene new on August 29 2006 by lesterhead Bistro Lafayette 4 Replies Bistro Lafayette is the meeting place for the Bed Stuy North Improvement Association I figured that if people are planning on attending the meetings Monday nights at 7 30pm someone should review the food there And since I like food So Bistro Lafayette My little ride parked outside as Marise opens up The inside of Bistro Lafayette It s located on 338 Franklin Avenue not Lafayette Avenue as previously posted between Greene and Lexington Avenues Why is it called Bistro Lafayette Wouldn t Bistro Franklin Bistro Greene or Bistro Lexington be more appropriate I guess Bistro is a French word and Lafayette is that famous French dude so maybe it does make sense Anyway I digress On my first visit more on this in a second I took the recommendation of Marise the very pleasant hostess and ordered the Lafayette Burger a burger with goat cheese and carmelized onions for 8 I was too excited that I got my food and took a bite before I remembered to take a picture Again While the idea of goat cheese and carmelized onions sounds great on a burger there was something still missing Good idea good ingredients but something keeped it from being great I couldn t really put my finger on it and I probably could have figured it out but I got caught up in a really funny conversation with another patron and Marise that I totally forgot to take notes on the food An incomplete food review by me just wasn t going to cut it Lesterhead s a real pain in the butt sometimes So I went back the next day for breakfast Bistro eggs with a side of Turkey bacon This time I ordered the Bistro eggs for 5 Eggs any style toast grits fries or home fries I got my eggs over medium passed on the grits they get all over everything and got some Turkey bacon on the side Turkey bacon was excellent home fries were good but my eggs were a little overcooked Eh I ll live Now while I do have to say the food is just passable I would go back again because I had such a great time eating there It s usually tough to eat alone in restaurants but I never felt like I was eating alone as the patrons and staff were all really nice and willing to
