  • Y: Going Downhill? | Clinton Hill Blog
out That said I would love for an alternative to open in the area And for those crying about newcomers from their whiny and entitled places please call the wahhhmbulance It s getting old Log in to Reply MadisonRez January 14 2010 at 4 26 pm Exactly Grand but your standards must be lower than what you expect from a club that charges 150 a month The big picture is that sometimes the Y is an incredible value and sometimes it is just average If you are not satisfied then you are free to spend more money elsewhere where you needs would be better met If 40 gets you a few broken pieces of equipment and a wait for a machine to be available so be it that is to be expected at this price point The next cheaper alternative is Prospect Park it is free always working and never a wait Log in to Reply GrandAve January 14 2010 at 4 36 pm Oh I totally agree MadisonRez but I think the point of this post is that 40 once got you more machines in a cleaner space Since that is clearly not the case anymore it s time t move on I m fine paying more and would be really happy not to have to leave the neighborhood to work out We ll see what the future brings I ve actually seen some posts in other forums expressing interest in opening gyms work out spaces in the area Log in to Reply MadisonRez January 14 2010 at 4 43 pm I wonder if a cooperative gym has ever been created and was successful A google search yields little Log in to Reply Clermonter January 14 2010 at 10 06 pm I would sign up for a new gym in a flash I use the Y because of convenience price is not the issue We need something anything better than the tiny crunch I have to imagine there would be sufficient demand to warrant another player entering this market Log in to Reply clintoner January 14 2010 at 10 55 pm it does seem to have been getting a little worse lately the broken paper towel machines the overly humid and slightly musty locker room etc the equipment seems to get fixed pretty quickly for the weight machines and the cardio machines less quickly they re closed tomorrow fri for the installation of new equipment which i m curious about one of the staff members said it included new treadmills with better tv reception not something i m particularly interested in but the guy asking was vehement about the lack i tend to go in the early afternoon when it is not really crowded at all i like it for this and for convenience i d be really interested in a gym space in the absolute though on a side note how are the classes there if people have tried them Log in to Reply davide5 January 15 2010 at 1 31 am Chris My sincerest apologies for my failure to include a definitive subject noun in my post I thought it was somewhat clear that I was referencing BklynPBR s post that commented on the lowly state of the Crunch Fitness on Fulton My response in essence was that Crunch membership fees are now approaching Equinox levels Although I did not perform a wiki search I can tell you my last Crunch bill was 98 month I guess I now stand corrected based upon your wiki search of the estimated Equinox monthly rates and Crunch is actually a great deal Log in to Reply alilamos January 15 2010 at 9 49 am I think the neighborhood ownership discussion is interesting I have lived here 5 years and I feel that my neighbors who grew up and who s famiies live here certainly have more ownership of the neighborhood than I do Our block has changed so much over those 5 years While some of the older neighbors are friendly and some keep to themselves everyone looks you in the eye and says hello when you pass like a neighbor I notice new neighbors don t even look you in the eye or acknowledge your presence They don t seem to have any interest in anything but using the neighborhood for cheap rent plus want all the resources of park slope They don t really care about the real issues their neighborhood has like deplorable schools and seem to have more of a NIMBBY attitude as long as they don t have to SEE the problems People feel ownership b c they have invested in a place so I don t know how someone who just moved here has invested themselves I have come to know some people on my block and surrounding area but in no way am I similar to people I see who know many people in the hood b c they ve all been here their families know each other they went to school here and there is history The thing about the changes that saddens me is that newer residents don t respect this deeper sense of ownership and investment My downstairs neighbor is in his 60 s and grew up here No way would I tell him I have as much ownership as him I respect his history and love talking with him to learn more about the hood the guy on the corner who used to always have the best cars back in the day the large german population that used to live here the terrible 70 s and how the crack epidemic tore the neighborhood apart as different people s kids got caught up in the storm I think our egos won t allow some of us to give the respect to people we don t respect for other reasons Log in to Reply alilamos January 15 2010 at 9 54 am I want to add that family is a big
