    UM are also responsible for manufacturing the specimens and structures that will be tested The common partners in these two activities guarantee the compatibility between the manufacturing and the testing specifications The fabrication of small specimens involves all end users participating in the project and most of the technology providers The fabrication of patches for all tests both laboratory and full scale is done by the repair contractors AS2CON ENP and UM Full scale tests involve partners with high skills and experience in on site testing like AIMEN CETENA BV NTNU and NTUA NTUA and specifically the Shipbuilding Technology Laboratory has extensive experience in both laboratory and full scale test measurements The FE modelling activities of the project will be carried out by partners having a great deal of experience in the numerical modelling of large steel structures of composite materials and of composite patch repaired steel structures These partners AIMEN AS2CON CETENA BV HRS ISQ NTNU NTUA and UniS have experience with all major commercial finite element codes either general purpose NASTRAN PATRAN DYTRAN ABAQUS ANSYS MARC etc or specialised and in house developed software This fact together with the number of these partners which is considered more than adequate ensures the successful performance of the FE modelling tasks CETENA is very well equipped and experienced in executing and coordinating tasks of this type The majority of the R D partners AIMEN AS2CON CETENA BV HRS and TWI together with two end users ENP and SSA and two universities NTUA and UniS will carry out the work of developing the design procedures These partners approach the subject from various angles Rules concept from the classifications societies academic approach from the university straightforward and practically followed procedures from the technology providers and the yards their complementarity ensuring the successful outcome of the effort The presence of AIMEN with all its corresponding expertise makes certain the orientation of the developed procedures towards increasing the competitiveness of the European industry Partners CARDAMA CETENA ENP BV HRS SSA and AS2CON have direct or indirect access to many ships and ship owners or ship operators among which the final marine full scale test cases will be selected Partners like NTUA AIMEN ISQ and UniS have also close links to several national highway railway or port authorities among which the civil engineering full scale test application will be selected The complementary participation of R D and university partners AIMEN METTLE NTNU NTUA and UniS guarantees the successful performance of all corresponding design and experimental results assessment activities The technology provider partners and the end users are involved in all full scale testing activities Partners AIMEN CETENA and BV have a large expertise in on site large scale measurements and consequently have also the responsibility for performing the tests All partners will take part in the dissemination of results with TWI and the participating universities having a primary role Results exploitation is ensured by the trade interests of the participating technology providers AIMEN CETENA BV HRS

    competitiveness The Technology Centre AIMEN participates in numerous regional national and international R D i projects In the majority of cases in collaboration with the industry both SMEs and large multinational companies that can be grouped into the following five research lines Joining Technologies Laser Technologies Materials and Manufacturing Processes Design and Simulation and Non Destructive Testing Role in the project Related to Non Destructive Testing techniques AIMEN develops own R D projects as well as projects that are conducted in collaboration with the industry For instance AIMEN has investigated the Application of Non Destructive Testing Techniques by means of Ultrasonics for the Evaluation of Welded Joints by Resistance Spot Welding or Non Destructive Testing techniques for joints including ultrasonic testing induced currents examination by radiography and thermography and by penetrant testing In addition two new and innovative NDT techniques have been developed in AIMEN for welded joints by resistance and an online monitoring system to be implemented in the automotive industry which captures parameters by means of ultrasonic waves to draw conclusions on the quality of the weld Moreover new NDT equipments were developed including a tomography and electromagnetic NDT Furthermore AIMEN has developed projects that deals with preparation of the metal surface prior being subject to be patched by the composite The surface was modified by various abrasive or chemical methods using primer which increases the adherence between steel and composites Projects include Research Development Project of Resin Coatings for its Application in Commercial and Industrial Production Processes and Weld bonding development for thin metals using hybrid technologies adhesives spot welding adhesives mechanical fasteners Analysis of the steel composite joint by testing different adhesives and optimising thus the parameters of the process including thickness of the layer tack times etc based on mechanical tests of the joint Projects

    Formally it takes part in this project through its limited company ALVEUS d o o registered in Rijeka Croatia ALVEUS is an SME founded in Jan 2006 by the personnel of AS2CON to foster activities within the Croatian maritime and shipbuilding industry and exploit the pool of available experts and expertise in this part of Europe AS2CON focuses on research and development of new structural concepts and methodologies e g crashworthy structures steel sandwich panels AS2CON consults industry with structural analysis vibrations collision and grounding and optimization AS2CON develops customized engineering software and currently works on a new platform for concurrent group design of ships nG ZINE Role in the project Following the principal interests of the end users AS2CON aims to offer to the maritime market the COMPOSITE PATCHES as an engineered solution AS2CON aims to both design produce and install composite patches Therefore AS2CON will seek in the project to identify marketable applications contribute to the numerical assessment of behaviour of the patches To ease their customized design AS2CON will create a simple design tool for early dimensioning Most of all AS2CON will provide access to the end users produce patch specimens for testing and perform large scale

    A was founded in 1910 and dedicates its activity to the repair and construction of ships Based in Vigo in the Northwest of Spain CARDAMA is the biggest centre for middle size ship repair in the region Its quality and dedication makes this shipyard to one with the highest volume of work in Spain The following are the lines of activity in CARDAMA shipyard Design and construction of steel ships including trawlers tugboats cargo ships training ships oceanographics of up to 100 m length Repair and Transformation of ships of up to 2800 tpm Role in the project In relation to repair and transformation of ships CARDAMA offers its customers the following works and services Ship boiler making CARDAMA covers all types of boiler making works and ship pipe works both in carbon steel and in stainless steel or in aluminium Therefore all types of ship building repairing or transformation keelsons can be accomplished by CARDAMA Facilities include two boiler making factories one of pre assembly with two bridge cranes of 20 tn and another workshop factory with the following machinery 1 bending machine of 4000 mm and 300 tn 1 vertical press of 300 tn 1 horizontal press of 150 tn 1 numerical controlled cutting machine with a work envelope of 12000x3200 by oxygen and plasma Welding activities include electrode MIG welding TIG welding and submerged arc welding Six dry dock facilities for vessels from 1000 to 3000 tn of upward power and five tower cranes from 3 to 20 tn Ultrasound plate thickness Measurement of ultrasound plate thickness of the vessel structure approved by Bureau Veritas and R I N A Ship mechanics include works on shafting lines steady and variable propellers rudders servo rudders and fuses CARDAMA s mechanical workshop includes the following machinery One horizontal lathe

    the leadership of Pescagest S A a main local fishing company The objective of its constitution was the candidacy to the concession of infrastructures destined to the inserted construction and naval repairing in the new fishing harbour The potentialities of ENP are not depleted in the strict domain of naval construction The approximately 70 000 m2 of busy area the 350 m of quay to less than 6 meters and the existing characteristics of the buildings and structures offer conditions and elasticity for the integrated development of complementary activities among which stand out the nautical installation of one pole for parking and the maintenance of medium and large size recreational boats a project which at this moment is in the study phase It is today the Portuguese shipyard better equipped for the naval intervention in the gamma of small and medium boats with the additional advantage of a reply capacity that includes simultaneously steel composites and aluminium both for construction and for repair works The shipyard s technical staff is composed by 8 persons 6 naval architects and 2 marine engineers 71 directly productive personnel and 24 non directly productive personnel ENP uses CAD CAM methods integrated with CNC plasma torches to cut every hull part Then manual or semi automatic welding methods are applied by certified welders to ensure good welding lines These welds are often verified and certified by a Classification Society Quality control tools such as X ray photographs are used according to Classification Societies requirements Role in the project Concerning composite materials construction as a guarantee against the prevention of osmosis the whole hull is laminated at room temperature above 15 C and with relative humidity below 70 inside a workshop with air heating and filtering with walls thermally insulated with 100 mm of polyurethane foam
