  • What to Do When You Don’t Win – Volleyball Coach Chuck Rey | Volleyball Blog | College Volleyball Coach
Ironically this piece was written on September 28 2011 His team lost 3 straight matches and lost 2 more immediately following this article After this 5 game skid the St Mary s team won 11 of their next 13 matches Staying the Course Process over Outcome By admin Last Thursday we played our first conference match of the year at BYU a new member of the West Coast Conference We knew they were very good even better than when we played them earlier in the season I felt like we were ready to play well and we were expecting a very competitive match It wasn t competitive We got crushed in straight sets As good as BYU is we certainly didn t make it very difficult for them In my seven years at Saint Mary s I don t believe we have ever played that poorly from start to finish in any match Against a team like BYU if you simply show up they are going to embarrass you which they did We still aren t sure exactly why we played so poorly Maybe it was simply a confluence of everybody on our team having an off night Maybe there were nerves Maybe I did not prepare them well for the opponent Maybe it was all of the above Whatever it was it was ugly During the match we gave the best tactical feedback we could and we did our best to motivate them to play better It just wasn t happening After the match I was very candid with them and I told them that I had thoughts of making them run sprints up the hill by the gym or tearing into them verbally ranting and raving like a lunatic I told them that when they play like that it makes me question everything we are doing I had the urge to do something radically different I wanted to make a statement In the end what we did was no different from what we always do We went back to work It is tempting when we are coaching to react in some extreme way when things are not going the way we expect them to go My ego has gotten in the way many times in my coaching career and that s when we blow up and start yelling and screaming and threatening In such moments we need to check our egos and think about what is truly best for the team If we are doing our very best in preparation for a match then no matter how the match goes all we can do after the match is continue to do our very best So we are staying the course We are as invested in the process of excellence now as we were before and we aren t going to let a bad match derail us from doing what we believe are the right things or from doing things the right way If we need to do those

  • Hugh McCutcheon on Coaching Men vs Women – Volleyball Coach Chuck Rey | Volleyball Blog | College Volleyball Coach
team matches side by side on my computer I recognized how passing and defense back court in the women s game still reigns supreme Not that it doesn t in the men s side men s blocking defense is a great priority but watching the men there is very little tipping or roll shots All in system and most out of system balls are swung with maximum force On the women s side I am watching an aging Logan Tom sorry Logan be a very roll shot and tip player I don t think her arm is as strong as it used to be reminds me of Karch on the beach in his last few years or maybe she s not getting up as high and resorts to be being a smart L2 ball control outside hitter But the women were able to win by keeping the ball in play Team IPE relied on their defense their physicality came into play at the net and ball control It will be interesting to watch Megan Hodge play this coming weekend to see if she can contribute offensively enough and hold her own passing to be on the roster to the Olympics The underlying story as we all know is the serving and passing game If you look at the FIVB stats pages the USA Teams on average are ranking near the top as a team for passing and serving You can keep up with stats and matches on these websites USAVolleyball org FIVB org Volleywood net live online feeds I am excited to watch the last matches of the World League and World Grand Prix matches and even more excited for the Olympics Of course I m hoping the USA Men will repeat and the USA Women will win their first

  • AAU Championships vs USAV Nationals – Volleyball Coach Chuck Rey | Volleyball Blog | College Volleyball Coach
Nationals no longer decides the best club team by age division in the country Unfortunately there are too many top teams that never play each other throughout the year Yet banners will soon hang throughout top clubs across the country claiming their team is national champion from winning either the AAU Championship or USAV Nationals But can a club justifiably raise a national banner unless their team wins both the AAU and USAV Open Division Championships in their respective age division in the same year and very few teams play in both events I m not denying the great feat of winning one of these tournaments nor trying to rain on their parade In a world where every kid gets a medal I m bringing to light the major division in juniors volleyball There are many underlying factors a team enters the AAU Championships or USAV Nationals just as there are many underlying factors these two organizations exist But one clear indicator of the divide is geography where East meets West Take a look at the teams East and West of the Mississippi River that entered the two tournaments in the Open Division At the AAU Championships 84 teams entered from the West and almost double that amount with 159 teams from the East At USAV Nationals it s the opposite 132 teams from the West and a mere 39 teams from the East This explains why I watched so many California and Texas teams at USAV Nationals in New Orleans this past week Based on the numbers the AAU Championship is an Eastern Championship and the USAV Nationals is a Western Championship Although I m NOT suggesting another tournament a Championship playoff like NCAA Football s new four team playoff for the overworked youths that make these organizations millions
