    perspective and value for each individual on the team A gifted quality of mine one that developed through an unconventional family upbringing is a high emotional intelligence It has taken me quite some time to understand and recognize this quality and why I am able to connect so well with athletes But I must admit I was inadvertently not equal with my distribution of attention to each of the individuals of the team It is easier for a coach to provide more feedback and connect more with a high performing player on a team than it is to connect with a non starter Unintentionally there can be a time of awkwardness around a non starter because that player may carry a tension a disgruntled feeling an unwarranted animosity towards a coach for a lack of playing time Avoidance was the unconscious reaction to a potential confrontation glare or snarky remark rather than open up a healthy dialogue to build a better relationship The dialogue which can be should be life related a simple How is your day today but instead distraction by the immediate practice task at hand was chosen Obviously every player has a parent s but it wasn t until the birth of my children this incredible bond formed with my twins babies that barely coo nevertheless speak have I realized the true and equal value of every member of the team I think about a parent at home miles cities states and even multiple time zones away not able to connect with their child because their child s life is consumed I already dread those days Yet these same parents have entrusted me with providing a secure empowering environment in which their child can grow I realize I had not adequately provided water for the garden to grow evenly I ve never treated a player poorly in fact I believe all the players I have coached had a positive overall experience but I recognized this past season how I can be a better coach Acting on this recognition I made it a priority to make an equal effort to learn more about each player To better communicate to find out how their day went how they are doing in class how their family was back home Through these small simple efforts I noticed a positive shift in the overall weather of the practice gym a harmony while traveling to competitions an upward swing of the overall team chemistry The greatest underlying thought that resonated in my mind was how I would feel as a parent should a coach not offer courteous attention to my son or daughter It s the basis of human respect each and every one of us deserves no matter our position in life A tangible solution to quantify my actions was a simple checklist on our daily practice sheet There is a list of every player s initials on the practice sheet and I would make a simple notation of each interaction with

    technical abilities You can never expect a player to perform within a tactical construct outside his technical capabilities It is important for the coach to understand that each player on the team must have a specific role The player must accept the role feel comfortable with it and feel confident that the coach will in fact use him or her consistently whenever that role is required regardless if the player is the best or the poorest on the team In selecting the team the twelve best players are never chosen because the twelve best players will never make the best team Players willing to subjugate their egos for the good of the team are more valuable than those better players who may not be starting players and who will destroy the internal fabric of team cohesion Generally we look for nine potential starters three who will not start but who will replace by position the six starters The balance of the squad is made up of specialists who have one or two outstanding skills which have the capability to directly score points to change momentum or to prevent the opponent from gaining momentum Create a very specialized tactical system which takes maximum advantage of the players abilities Specialization is most likely the key Pre match warm up the team should ignore the opponent as much as possible Immediately before the game begins the coach should gather the players together so the last thing they hear before going to the court are the two most important elements of the team strategy and tactics During the course of the match the coach must constantly remind the players about the strategies and tactics to be used The key element is to constantly refocus the players attention which will naturally stray off the game plan back to those tactics which will bring success to the team You must constantly focus and refocus the players attention It is important for substitutes to be used early especially in a match that the coach expects will be a long close difficult one For a substitute to be effective he cannot be put into a match for the first time and be expected to perform at a high level Substitutions should not be made simply to allow players to play Players to do not have the right to play they have an obligation to do what is best for the team that by definition is what the coach decides Coaches Must Develop a Philosophy with which the Team can Identify Every team will take on the characteristics the demeanor the emotional nature of the head coach The coach must be aware of this and must strive to create a positive environment so that his strong characteristics will be adopted by the team and the team will benefit by the very natural association that they have with the head coach It is critical the coach exhibit some of the following traits a The coach must be prepared at all

    the situation from a distance or ask another employee who s close with her to check in and make sure she s all right Keep it simple If you ve identified that the problem is a personal one stick to simple and comforting responses I m sorry or This is a horrible situation Don t tell him that everything s going to be OK or imply that he should buck up And resist the temptation to tell a story of your own The last thing in the world an anxious employee wants to hear about is how you handled your own or someone else s illness says Kreamer Focus on work related concerns The most helpful thing you can do is listen and try to help them solve their work related concerns Kreamer advises If you discover that an office issue prompted the crying work with the employee and colleagues if necessary to address it If it s a personal problem you can also help her make a plan You might say something like This is rough let me know what would be most helpful to you and we ll see if we can make that happen Try to get specific Can you temporarily reduce her workload Can you set up regular check ins to monitor the situation and how it s affecting her work In the most extreme case it could be necessary to suggest a leave of absence and bring in temporary help Kreamer says Don t play psychiatrist There may be some situations that you re not equipped to handle mental illness or substance abuse for example In these cases or in any situation that you re not comfortable addressing refer the person to HR or an employee assistance program EAP This shouldn t be your first reaction when you see tears but you also shouldn t take on something out of your comfort zone Pay attention Don t wait for a crisis to tune into people s emotions Provide opportunities for employees to talk with you about what s going on in their lives You might set aside a few minutes at the end of one on one meetings Kreamer suggests asking questions like Are there any issues on the horizon that might affect you Let s put them on the table and see what we can do about them This gives employees permission to open up Often employees are frightened to ask for help because they feel they re risking their value to the organization she says Sanchez Burks research shows that being attuned to your employees not only makes you more human it makes you a better leader too Principles to Remember Do Act like you would in a social situation be comforting and solicitous Keep your responses simple and focused on the employee Make a specific plan for handling the situation going forward Don t Judge people who bring emotions to work it s not unprofessional to cry it s human Try to
