  • TRX® training for performance – Q&A with Jamie Hinton Of Team Freespeed Skechers Performance
cottage beam a kids climbing frame and a couple of hotel doorways Q Can TRX help with off season stretching and rehabilitation or is it mainly used within your competition training programme For me the stretching and rehab part is just as important if not more so than for competion programme Over the past couple of years I ve realised that racing at the top amateur level is as much about injury prevention than how strong fast you are There s no point training to your max but risking injury that can put you out for a chunk of the season The suspension trainer allows much more of a stretch into deeper muscles than any static stretch or general cool down If injury does occur you can tweak the way you use TRX to find the right intensity Exercises can be as tough or chilled as they need to be Q What s the best exercise to improve on each individual element swim cycle and run The swim is all about full body movement reach pull and rotation I use the TRX to keep everything open and moving freely with a number of stretches e g the Lower Back Stretch with rotation which increases flexibility in the lower back and hamstrings and improves upper back mobility Also it feels amazing I often do this in the morning even before coffee For the cycle strength is key particularly in the quads and glutes I go for the Crossing Balance Lunge as it really challenges the hip s rotational movement strength and increases mobility If I m feeling brave then the Pike with Mountain Climber is probably the most intense move I ve found on the TRX It builds masses of core strength which I m looking forward to summoning in the final push of a big race Q How much will your TRX training programme vary from winter to summer Through the winter off season we ll work more on building strength with the TRX It s a period where we can work on progressive overload and building some muscle when we re not competing as regularly Then as we build closer to the season through spring we ll focus our training more on building core flexibility mobility and power Q Which discipline benefits most from improving your strength and flexibility It s tricky to pick out one as the benefits provide progression in whole body movement I ve found that the stretching exercises have helped my swim technique and reduced some of the post training tightness in my upper back The cycle and run disciplines will benefit more from the TRX core work and explosive power movements we re incorporating Ultimately anything that shaves seconds off race times is beneficial For more information about TRX products and education visit https uk trxtraining com or to find out more about Team Freespeed visit http www teamfreespeed com Related Stories Swim Tip Getting The Correct Hand Position Should You Finish A Bad
