  • Tried and tested: Zoot Laguna
The barefoot technology feels great against the skin but also does not feel out of place when socks are worn It was difficult to notice the varus wedge in these shoes Zoot claim that the guidance is only there for those who need it and engage it Once running in the shoes it became apparent where this training falls into the market Not a race day flat and not a max cushion shoe but a training that sits right in the middle A shoes that is fast enough to do speed work tempo and longer distance racing in with enough support and guidance to keep you moving The shoe had great traction and felt very very responsive when the pace was changing With the price point at 90 it sits right in the middle of the mild pronation shoe sample and with the feel and features it has the shoe comes up trumps Overall the Zoot Laguna shoe is a well designed shoe that can be used for a range of running for longer distance racing to speed work and temp runs The barefit technology again works brilliantly and for those triathletes who always run without socks this is an amazing feature The laguna was more suited to the shorter faster runs as when it got onto the longer runs more cushion would be favoured With the weight of the shoe coming in line with other guidance shoes on the market this shoe is up there in the mix More info on these shoes and other zoot products can be found at www zootsports com Related Stories Tri d and Tested Zoot Ultra Tri Aero Skinsuit Tried and Tested Zoot Makai Racing Shoe Let the races begin with Zoot Makai Tried and Tested Zoot Diego FILED UNDER Gear Tech TAGS

  • Buyer’s guide: Wetsuits
even with a tired core Grab a buddy and give yourself at least 10 minutes to get the suit on once that CPS locks you in it s difficult to pull the reverse zipper down on your own Getting out of it on the other hand is a quick solo job for a fast T1 View Larger Image Orca Equip W Our testers went crazy for the hot look of the Orca s blue and silver striped arms A magical low neck keeps water out without that dreaded choking feeling while the shoulders feel as soft as those in more expensive suits With good rotational aid and a fast feel the Equip is a steal A few caveats Curvier women may find the cut too straight And escaping from the tighter feet openings may require a little extra effort in T1 View Larger Image Neo Sport NRG Sleeveless W Neo Sport nails the tough part about designing sleeveless suits keeping water out of the neck and shoulders The downside to that tight fit Swimmers with large lats might feel a pinch The mid calf cut off makes for a lightning fast transition but feet draggers might want the extra buoyancy of a full leg The NRG s thick 5mm front and 3mm back will give you the maximum allowable buoyancy without making you overheat in warmer swims A subtle sparkle takes this suit a step beyond basic black View Larger Image Huub Aegis M This suit offers everything you need to get through your first triathlon great buoyancy help with rotation a snug fit and easy exit features Throw in a simple but aggressive looking design and you ll have your game face on when the gun goes off More experienced swimmers may find the shoulders inflexible compared to the most free moving suits while Clydesdales may find the Aegis fit a bit too slim View Larger Image Blueseventy Fusion Full W Even the best swimmers feel like they are strapped on a rocket pack when suited up in the Fusion Perfectly placed buoyancy panels aid rotation and raise hips in the water for ideal body position Pink honeycomb catch panels on this women s suit give the suit understated femininity Blueseventy keeps the price low by using more affordable rubber which translates into slightly thick shoulder and elbow material that may chafe some pits on longer swims But nothing beats the Fusion in speed for your dollar View Larger Image Aquaman Bionik Sleeveless M Think of the Bionik as an extra layer of insulation when it s not quite warm enough to go suitless It won t pop you out of the water with tons of padding but it has a nice neutral feel that ll let you work on your stroke and your kick unimpeded While comfortable the low neckline may let too much water in for some athletes View Larger Image 2XU V 3 Velocity M One tester said it best I feel like I was cutting

  • Gear review: Huub Archimedes II
to put on suit with a comfortable neckline and still have a fast removal with the breakaway zip Swim Test So with these changes how does the suit perform I m 5 foot 8 ½ or 174cm with a 40 inch chest and currently a lot closer to 12 stone than 11 and used the SMT sized suit which fitted perfectly I did do a quicker refresher on putting on the suit by watching this video Worth a visit for the hint to have the zip up around an inch before putting it on which is needed as that first inch because of the breakaway zip is a little sticky Before trying the Archimedes II I went through test swims in my old suits to get a comparison Starting with my first entry level suit that weighs a tonne and feels like a straitjacket but even in my most recent top of the range suit the usual things sprung to mind tight around the shoulders and calf muscles and a feeling of bunching in the material around the back of the knees and elbows when swimming A quick non scientific speed test had me going around 1 second per 50m quicker in my current suit to my original entry level suit Putting on the Huub Archimedes II is relatively painless certainly the calf release makes getting the bottom half on extremely simple and the top like any good fitting wetsuit is still a bit of work I was concerned that with the new thinner panels that the suit would be more liable to tears but due to the inherent stretchiness in these areas it s actually the thicker 5mm panels that are more at risk to tears something to keep in mind The suit is still delicate and I d recommend using very thin gloves when putting on to avoid nail nicks The release panels and white detailing aid in getting the suit position spot on and the zip is simple to operate solo In the water the first thing you notice is the freedom around the shoulders the difference is obvious There seems to be no resistance or fight here and swim motion is natural Whilst for open water a straighter arm and more swinging stroke may be preferable this suit doesn t involuntarily force you to adopt such a style This flexibility in the shoulders along with the thinner arms and lower modulus bicep release panel gives the feeling of a sleeveless suit like wearing the ideal swim skin Adding to this is the fact that below the knee there is no real sensation of wearing a wetsuit but above the knees and around the core you can feel the x o skeleton compress and hold the body in shape There is a stark contrast between the compression around the thighs and core and the freedom movement and sense of nothingness in the lower legs upper back shoulders and arms A great mix of stability and compression making
