  • Conversations Journal – Community As Theological Necessity
knew that I wanted this church to be different from much of what I had seen and experienced I wanted it to reflect the type of community that I read about in the book of Acts but had rarely experienced in the church Mindful of the fact that I live in a very different time and culture than the one present in the book of Acts I set out to shape a culture that would be driven by theological convictions on community rather than pragmatic approaches It took a lot of time and energy to accomplish this but by God s grace our church began to reflect the sort of churches that we were reading about in the New Testament It was a slow and painful process that required us to rethink success We gave up worrying about how many people attended on Sundays and became far more interested in the number of people sharing their lives their food and their homes with one another To read the rest of this article you can purchase the entire issue or just this article through our Journal Store Mark Moore Mark A Moore is a faculty member of The Leadership Institute www spiritualleadership com where he helps train leaders who listen to God follow Jesus rhythms of life and lead from the overflow He is currently writing a book called The Unlikely Contemplative InterVarsity Press which addresses the challenges of being a driven visionary leader and a contemplative You can connect with Mark on Twitter mooreamark Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to email this to a friend Opens in new window More Click to share on Facebook Share Opens in new window Click to share on Reddit Opens in new

the place that you really believed that I d just led them through a meditative exercise that had helped me immensely what else could I offer But in that moment of face to face interaction with him another answer came to me Several years earlier I d gotten involved in a twelve step group With head down and hands over my face I had struggled to confess my mistakes I d expected to look up and see disapproving shocked faces because some of these people knew I was married to the pastor at the church down the road Instead I looked up and saw nodding heads warm smiles and sympathetic eyes Those receptive understanding faces became the face of God for me They communicated grace in accepting me amiably passive grace as unmerited favor and their encouragement somehow equipped me to change active grace as empowerment This set me up to start seeing God continually inviting me into a life of fullness and freedom As I described this to my questioner I began to grasp that we really need other people on our transformation journey To read the rest of this article you can purchase the entire issue or just this article through our Journal Store Jan Johnson Jan Johnson is the author of twenty books including Invitation to the Jesus Life and Abundant Simplicity and a thousand articles and Bible studies She speaks at retreats and conferences and teaches adjunct at Azusa Pacific University and Hope International University Also a spiritual director Jan holds a D Min in Ignatian Spirituality and Spiritual Direction She lives with her husband in Simi Valley California You can visit her at JanJohnson org Click to share on Twitter Opens in new window Share on Facebook Opens in new window Click to email this
