  • COSMIC SOUNDS REMIXED VOL. 2
this compilation sees tracks from the old and new side of things reworked for the dancefloor Kicking off with Butti 49 s update of Dusko Gojkovic s Quo Vadis Samba the album includes alternative takes on Janko Nilovic s Giant Locomotion from London s Block 16 and Belgrade s Painkiller Septet alongside So Hayashi s space jazz version of Jan Wroblewski s Katorna and Ex Robot s broken jazz reworking of Kerleta s own Move With Time File next to Compost and watch this label grow Andy Thomas PERRY HEMUS Woodlands Records Wow really fantastic well done I Love Panoptikum especially but all the remixes are v solid and I look forward to playing them out NIK WESTON Mukatsuku PR Favourite tracks by BUTTI 49 MFP COLLECTIVE and SIMBAD TOM WIELAND Les Gammas Panoptikum It s getting better all the time cool artwork My fave tunes are Bojan s painkiller the Simbad detroitish one wicked PETER ISAAC Jally Jazz Stunning collection of obscure tracks from European artists all remixed by contemporary producers Highlights include Butti 49 s easy samba mix of Dusko Gojkovic s Quo Vadis Samba and Block 16 s dead funky flute led remix of Janko Nilovic s Giant Locomotion There s tons more music spread out over 2 slabs of vinyl and the vast array of sounds take in jazz house samba bossa nu jazz beats funk and techno A very impressive collection and although many won t recognise any of the names here this shouldn t deter taking a closer look DAVID BASSIN Free Fall Bay Area What a fantastic album The first Cosmic Sounds Remix album was one of my favorite compilations of last year and it s safe to say that Volume 2 will wind up on the best of 2004 year end list As with Volume 1 artists and producers were asked to select a track from the CS catalog and work their magic Butti 49 Electrosacher So Hayashi Block 16 and others did just that and the result is practically the definition of future jazz From slammin samba and modern afro beat to slinky spooky grooves and plucked Middle eastern flavored strings there are a myriad of unusual flavors that all come together brilliantly for a most satisfying collection DUSTY GROOVE http www dustygroove com Eastern European jazz classics remixed The sound here is really tremendous a fresh take on a sound that s still mostly underground 60s and 70s recordings from former Iron Curtain nations most of which are groovers based around the modal fusion or funky styles that were big at the time in the west The set brings together 9 older recordings previously issued on Cosmic Sounds in the originals with remixers that have a strong appreciation for the grooves and who open the tracks up without losing any of the charm of the original The stunning thing is how jazzy the whole set feels with most of the solos or instrumental tones still very much in the forefront

  • DUSKO GOJKOVIC - East Of Montenegro
Dusko Gojkovic This was the legendary trumpeter s only show at the BJF but his performance at the Dom Sindikata Concert Hall in 1975 went down as one of the highlights of that memorable year Sophisticated use of local folklore in jazz would be a strong forte on this album as well as in Dusko s long career Line up names are speaking for themselves Excellent musicians in obviously good mood inspired by festivals atmosphere All that justifies unusually long tracks for Dusko KEITH BAKER what a find really really enjoyable RUI TORRINHA Porto Portugal Absolute masterpiece Hard to believe this album came a long way such is its contemporary relevance Cosmic Sounds delivers a brilliant contribution to revise the state of jazz and all the knowledge of great masters like Dusko and his quintet An album that I already listened more than ten times in two days Something really special indeed Favourite tracks no particular ones at all the whole album is my favourite track PETER JOPPICH what a find this recording sounds fresh as if it was recorded at the latest jazz festival in 2003 the highest timeless quality another milestone in his long career putting together the spirit from his meetings playings and travellings at this concert session what a luck that this recording from that period came out nowadays and did not get lost MANFRED BLAAS I received the CDs two weeks ago and listened extensivly They re just great Check out the Spontaneity and Energy of the Solos by Dusko Goykovich tenor player Ferdinand Povel and the nowadays lesser known rhythm section pianist Vince Benedetti bass player Bert Thompson and my favorite drummer Billy Brooks Really great You ll enjoy it DUSTY GROOVE A lost chapter in the career of trumpeter Dusko Goykovic a live

  • NOW'S THE TIME by Kevin LeGendre
by ordinary people so we re grateful Thanx to Kevin for 2 years of Now s the time This is a pretty gift for all music lovers around Let s hope it s not his last one My favourite tracks Burhan Ocal ft Jamaaladdeen Tacuma and Kadash with his Nile Troup ROCCO PANDIANI Right Tempo Italy You really got me with this one DAVID BASSIN FreeFall San Francisco Kevin LeGendre the host of the BBC London radio program collects some of the show s highlights and what highlights they are Jazz from around the globe representing some of the genre s most innovative artists working in a myriad of styles Sounds of Africa the Middle East Jamaica and Eastern Europe are given breathtaking arrangements by Charles Brackeen Omar Sosa Tied Tickled Trio Peter Apfelbaum and Kadash The Nile Troup to name a few Kudos to Cosmic Sounds for yet another outstanding release ENNIO STYLES Stylin Australia This is heavyweight powerful music I ve been curious about Kevin Le Gendre ever since I heard about his show I could never check it out because I was always at work at the time it was on Now I can t check it out at all So thanks for putting the compilation out because I don t know how I would have heard this music otherwise Kevin obviously has a unique ear and I m sure that finding these tunes was a lot of work there s a lot of really bad contemporary jazz to wade through The liner notes comment It s not Nu Jazz even though it s new jazz really sums it up Marrakesh by the Omar Avital Group is particularly breathtaking DUSTY GROOVE One of the most striking albums on the always striking Cosmic Sounds label a rich collection of contemporary jazz tracks showing the underground spirit of the 70s is alive and well The tunes on this set are of recent origin but many of them feel like they could have been lifted off of some of our favorite compilations of older tunes mixing jazz and world music influences like some of the best sets on the Soul Jazz label or some of the excellent Shibuya Jazz Classics series The material is compiled by Kevin LeGendre in memory of his similarly titled show on the BBC which presented work in a similar vein and the scope of the music is a bracing reminder of the persistence of creative energy in jazz CHRISSIE MURRAY SIMPLY COSMIC The loss of Kevin LeGendre s Now s The Time show on BBC London is another diminishing blow to jazz on radio Kevin has kept alive with an engaging passion a seriously neglected area of the music constantly reminding us of the debt we owe so many overlooked African American freeform and World pioneers stretching back to the Sixties and Seventies Now some of Kevin s priceless collection is set out in the Now s The Time compilation on the enterprising Cosmic Sounds

track Ennio Styles remix of SHQ s Cuban Chant The piano jazz mutates progressively into a more modern beast as crunching beats and squidgy synth take up the slack and ride the tune for all its worth until we are bang up to date Magic stuff Then for the first time we get a glimpse of the modern side of the Cosmic Sounds catalogue several high class remixes of Arkestra One cuts The animals friend Johnny Morris guides us through some mutant disco on Filling it with Song twiddled around by Panoptikum Gak Sato serves up I Really Want You with driving insistence and if I m not mistaken grabs an achingly beautiful strings phrase from the Janko Nilovic LP that was kindly slipped in along with this album This is perhaps my fave track its almost hypnotic The other one to capture my attention above the pack was the closing Belgrade Sound System remix of Coxless Pair s Contemplation I m a bit of a sucker for the kind of scary beats dished up by the likes of Third Eye Foundation y see and this does the trick just as effectively massive drums kick hell out of a single skwonking horn parp with dub set to maximum oh yes this is the stuff all right D ya get the impression that I really enjoyed this LP You d be right a righteous celebration of the goodness served up from a label that both strives to progress with its new moves and diligently protects the legacy of the masters of Eastern European jazz at one and the same time without doubt this LP is a concise illustration of those high standards and long may they continue cos I ll be with them from here on in THEVIBES NET Italy Click here for the ITALIAN REVIEW MARK XANGO Satelliet Holland Great great great stuff My mom will thank me for playing these ones 3rd of March it was album of the week on our Satelliet radioshow and we ll be playing it a lot more I m sure Some very strong elasticism between the 1960 s 1970 s and our present time Cosmic Sounds is making us very happy here in Groningen Personal favourite I prefer doing the dishes while playing this one Curly is the Crate Soul brothers opinion on Arkestra One But the bunnies out here love to rock their bums to the Ennio Styles treatment most RAW DEAL Groove Sanctuary I really love Mr Nicola Conte s remix Bloody hell can t this man do no wrong Me likes Eddy Dus s funk run down groove on STRAIGHT NO CHASER spring 2003 by Andy Thomas Whilst Zeljko Kerleta s Balkan Express compilation opened our ears to the breadth and quality of Yugoslavian jazz during the Sixties and Seventies his Cosmic Sounds label has also been responsible for pushing the new sounds of Serbia This project from the London based Belgrade jazz obsessive covers both bases with reworkings from
