Academy was featured in a separate story about charter schools in the state Read the article you ll pick up on some interesting facts that are sometimes over looked in the debate on school choice One of the major items on people s wish list for the City of Newark is better schools Betters school so that their kids can compete with the best in the state country and the world at top universities and beyond Better schools so that their house values will improve nicely allowing them to sell and come out ahead Better schools for all types of reasons For now though Newarkers have three solid talking points as to why this is a city of choice in which to live not a default pick Lastly in another major boost to urban education McNair Academic in Jersey City placed second on the list right behind Our Mayor to D C Newsday carried a little item about Mayor Cory Booker s plans to head to D C should Sen Barack Obama win the presidential election Specifically he says that he s not leaving Newark Of course that won t satisfy any the skeptics who insist that he s using Newark as a stepping stone to further his political career and that even if he keeps crime low improves the schools attracts development and empowers people to change their lives for the better that kind of ambition makes him a bad bad person Booker told The Associated Press in January that he wouldn t be interested in a Cabinet position if one were offered On Wednesday he reiterated that sentiment saying there s no way he d leave Newark He s just past the midpoint of his first term in office and is up for re election With so much recent attention placed on the development of luxury apartments and condos from big time developers and celebrities a lot of people were downright scared that ordinary people including ones that need a boost to get out of whatever scary situation they are facing would be left behind I think we should have more developments like these Although Newark makes for a tempting and relatively easy commute away from New York City it is going to take a little while for New Yorkers so completely saturate the far reaches of the boroughs or Hoboken and Jersey City that they ll automatically think OK let s look at Newark Don t get me wrong I think we got a great deal and have reduced my New Yorker friends to smiling politely and placidly every time I talk about our place but I think that for a while we ll need to make affordable housing a major part of the residential real estate mix before we become a sizzling market Here is the part of the story that ran in USAToday Jon Bon Jovi s Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation is providing 1 million toward construction of a 51 unit building that will cater to homeless people with special needs like AIDS patients The 15 million building called Genesis Apartments will rise where there is now a vacant lot Joining Bon Jovi at Tuesday s ground breaking were Gov Jon Corzine Newark Mayor Cory Booker fashion designer Kenneth Cole and his wife Maria Cuomo Cole who runs HELP USA a national nonprofit that is helping to build the units Today I believe we re starting something Bon Jovi said Together I believe we can make a difference one street one neighborhood one city one soul at a time Bon Jovi who s foundation has built affordable housing in Philadelphia New Orleans and other cities said he teamed up with Cole to design and market a line of jackets in 2006 to raise awareness to combat homelessness Profits from that line provided the money for the Newark project he said Author Ken Walker Posted on Newark can be serious business owing in no small part to the challenges of child rearing Finding the right schools keeping up with parent teacher meetings ferreting out just the right extra curricular activity for your child you all get the drill This stuff changes your life forever and if it weren t for helpful advice from friends in the form of books emails conversations or whatever some of us would be more dependent on the bottle of a different variety of course than our little bundles Here is a new discussion forum for Forest Hill parents designed to be another source of advice and helpful information to moms and dads in Forest Hill This is great because I m the type of person who is generally friendly and great to know However put me under just the right circumstances and I might take hostages to get what I want And I wouldn t want to set that kind of example for the new Baby on the way would I Of course not So this group will do nicely for me

a city we got angry cried and rallied against violent crime and even called for the resignation of the mayor because his promise of making Newark a safer city has not yet materialized We thought Iofemi Hightower Dashawn Harvey and Terrance Aeriel would be the wake up call Yet two months later we ve experience 15 more murders and at least 3 of the victims have been under 21 years of age Marquis Shoulders a student at Westside High School who many said was good kid had his life ended after an argument with someone in a car that pulled up on the street where he stood in front of a middle school in the Vailsburg section But what is so much colder than the way in which he was killed is the aftermath of his death There are no protests down town on the steps of city hall There are no calls for the mayor s resignation There is no increase in county or state police presence No one is crying any more No one is angry Newark has fallen back into its complacent feeling about violence and has once again come to accept that murder is simply apart of our lives I remember talking to someone during a conference in March in Minneapolis Minnesota with someone who was from Chicago He asked me is it that bad in Newark and I replied without hesitation yes Someone who was with me who is an older guy who loves Newark and never likes to speak about it in a negative light sounded much like Police Director Gary McCarthy He replied by saying that its not random killings and little children but its gang members drug dealers people who are involved in crime However my assertions and beliefs have been validated all year And that is that bullets have no names crime is random in Newark and much of the city is in chaos An 8 year was shot a 3 year old a 70 year old woman the 3 gruesome murders behind Mt Vernon the 20 year old on Elizabeth Avenue and Meeker Street the 16 year old boy on Pennington Street the man who was killed by his son the man shot to death on Smith Street the same weekend as the Mount Vernon incident and the woman who was stabbed to death by her step son There are so many being shot and killed and its a shame that I can name this many instances without looking into the newspaper or knowing any of the inviduals personally Many of these individuals weren t involved in violence or drugs or gangs or general crime but they live in a city where they struggle and simple disputes turn deadly as quickly as the second hand on a clock turns My hope is that someone sees the light and politicians stop making heavy handed speeches about what it is that they re going to do and speak honestly to people The

sitting around sucking in air Like Like Reply Lidia says October 4 2007 at 5 24 pm Mr Booker and Mr McCarthy only acted on the call of the MEDIA attention received due to the unfortunate murders of three wonderful college students Where are they now and what have they done about the other unsolved murders in Newark They need to stop comparing the murder count and start redirecting their police department They have made wrongful arrest due to poor investigation improper police work failure to follow up with any leads and that s why the rate just keeps going up and there are so many unsolved murders in Newark Had it not been all the attention on the three students they would also be forgotten The demand must stand on the Mayor he can make the difference and the results are there he reacted under demand and hopefully they have the cold blooded murderers of the innocent young students Like Like Reply EAS says October 4 2007 at 11 39 pm The Mayor himself cannot make the difference The community must get involved as a few people stated earlier Let s not forget the long term crime that has plagued Newark it did not happen overnight However I think the mayor should not have initially promised to lower crime rates significantly because that ain t easy Like Like Reply Donna says October 5 2007 at 2 16 am Lidia you cannot be serious Everyone cares about the death of Marquis Shoulders the same way that they cared about those three college kids recently murdered You can tell by the everyday things that churches neighborhood groups and public officials are doing to stem the tide of juvenile waywardness and give young people the sorts of prospects and direction that will discourage theft and violence I ve got news for you The same Donna Jackson who got up on the steps of City Hall and very loudly and inappropriately called for Booker to pack his bags is now working with the mayor on a couple of initiatives to improve the lives of young people You don t have to like the mayor or agree with him on everything but try not to get on the WORLD WIDE WEB and plaster irresponsible outrageous statements like or or Newark will change when WE change In the meantime it is not all up to the mayor to take personal responsibility for our shortcomings as a community Like Like Reply Donna says October 5 2007 at 2 20 am Hey What happened to the quotes or or Like Like in a country with endless opportunities and it s a shame our youth is wasting them Yes i can say I moved out of Newark with my child out of fear As a single parent with a young boy we got asked why was my son wearing red or what does that red stand for Mind you my child was 3 at the time Drugs and gangs are taking over Newark and it s overwhelming You can get a gun quicker than getting a credit card And no I don t feel as though all the weight should be put on the Mayor It s our community that s we live and if we condone the behavior that s going on how can we complain about things not changing We have to do it together I love Newark and after this deployment i will return to help fight the battle As I child I had a ball growing up in Newark and I want my son to have the same You have no right to complain if you not doing anything to change the situation If you could see the way Iraqi s live maybe our people won t be so ungreatful Like Like Reply Paul says December 31 2007 at Safety Politics City Hall 1 Comment on Tancredo trying for the Presidential SPOTLIGHT Using Newark Killings to Force his own Political Agenda Few Sitting Shotgun as Newark Officers Ride Alone The people who are armed with legal firearms whose job it is to protect the citizens of Newark are at a disadvantage every day Those people are Newark Police Officers and my younger sister happens to be one Any given day an officer can call out sick get injured be investigated for improper behavior and so many cops are forced to ride alone When she was just three months into her first year of active duty my sister was riding alone looking for signs of criminal behavior and making traffic stops which most times are seen as routine Yet we know that so called routine traffic have turned dangerous if not lethal in the past when a lone officer in the heat of the moment forgets to call for back up Or a criminal gets the drop on them while they are walking to the driver s side window they re shot and can t get themselves to the radio in the car to get medical attention on the side of the road Just as much as the every day citizen who fears for their life cops are faced with the gruesome reality that they will have to ride alone What then can or what then should we expect of officers How effective can they be if there are shots fired and it takes five minutes for the closest unit which is a one man car to get to the scene and then an additional five minutes for another officer riding alone to come to their aide They can t be effective Criminals will get away and we ll all be singing the same song and having the same conversation Somebody got shot last night The truth is if there are six cops patrolling a geographical area of Newark there should be three cars cruising However to show more of a police presence the department has opted to instead put 1 cop in 6 cars as a strategy to deter crime Sounds simple enough and intelligently effective but more lapses in reaction time occurs And let s face it If a law abiding citizen like myself can see an officer riding alone and think about all the things that could happen to them Then the perpetrators of drug deals thefts robberies murders and so many other violent crimes are concocting devastating assualts Think about of a few years ago when solo cops were just being shot in the head for approaching criminals on the streets or at high school basketball games There were no words exchanged no punches or wrestling but a gun shot My sister and I spoke at length last night about how there is approximately 20 cops patrolling the entire South Ward district during her shift 8 hours Just twenty The South Ward should be crawling with uniformed and plains clothes officers because this is where most of the shootings are occuring And these officers shouldn t be riding alone with out back up just a few feet away because guns can kill within a split second As we discussed this issue and others she stated My supervisor expects me to bring at least 6 tickets back a day I told him you ll be lucky if I bring you one if I don t have a partner with me Why should she have any confidence is approaching a car of two three or four males who could be gang members She s not a six foot two 220 pound veteran She s a slender five foot seven woman who is just finishing her first year and is still developing the instinct courage mind frame and controlled anger that officers need to survive in a town as rugged as the Brick City For an occupation where you start the day praying to be able to go back home safely You have the added pressure of having to go the day by yourself Officers are automatic targets and are more the rivals of the gangs and criminals because they have the authority to take their freedom away and or stop their flow of making money Why not shoot them They are more the enemy than a rival gang because the rival wants to do what the other gang wants to do Gangs dislike each other for a totally different reasons and try most of the time to remain on their own turf and away from their enemies Cops have enemies on both sides and the old sayings goes The enemy of my enemy is my friend So to Mayor Booker Garry McCarthy and Chief Campos you guys have another egg to fry before we can talk about turning this city arounds Because like they say The Street Is Watchin Author Ken Walker Posted on August 14 2007 Categories Featured Tags Ameer Washington Crime Safety Featured Newark Police Department 4 Comments on Few Sitting Shotgun as Newark Officers Ride Alone Want To Bet No One Will Act Want To Bet Those words were the last sentence in Bob Braun of the Star Ledger s column in this morning s paper That question refers to his opinion that nothing will change in Newark even with the execution style killings of Dashon Harvey Iofemi Hightower and Terrence Aeriel Braun says Newark is a city neglected by the state for as long as I ve worked there and that comes close to 50 years We build interstate highways around Newark to avoid seeing it and its people We allow its property taxes to become confiscatory and then complain about the city s shabbiness We allow it s school to become useless warehouses of children until the state takes over and then the state itself fails so now talks of giving up In my opinion Braun hits the nail right on the head
