  • Electric Gongs - Interface Design - davidnunez
invented a collection of instruments he called the Electric Gongs Using speaker coils wrapped around magnets adhered to points on the gongs we were able to isolate individual frequencies and tones We developed an exhibit about the gongs for the Austin Children s Museum They were launching a 9 month long collection of experiments exhibits and interactive pieces called Play it By Ear It encouraged kids to learn by playing Our piece was a highlight of the exhibition My role was to create a multitouch table as an interface to play the gongs Using the FTIR technique users could play multiple notes at once on a dynamic display The interface needed to withstand the intense conditions of users at a children s museum The unique challenge was to help the users infer the harmonious connection between notes of certain frequencies As tones were played lines were drawn between to other notes on the screen to show which notes would create pleasing chords A damping function was applied to the visualization to mimic the long decay of the gong sounds I also wrote the software that drove the speaker coils on the instruments 2415119593 8670e5a698 o 2415138067 916a3e3986 o 2415941478 2b34ba8a80
