  • First week observations - davidnunez
fact I have a list in a note in Outlook with ideas for me to write about I think I have enough ideas to last for a year Now whether or not those will actually be interesting is an entirely other story Right now my audience is pretty small just a few close friends from Rice and one from High School so after a little bit of time probably as much time as it takes me to redesign the site probably after I move and establish a new IP address I ll widen the scope to my broader list of friends and family I m not sure whether I should write things about the people I know I question if that s a violation of their privacy I need to figure out a way to increase feedback hint hint Except for a way to get things started email nobody responds to my writing the same way they would if it showed up in their inbox Movable Type has a feature that allows me to send out emails whenever I update the page but I think getting dozens of emails from me would make me seem like noise I HAVE enabled

  • Spam and Email System - davidnunez
disorganized or type B or luddites with a cloud of digital detritus that enables them to defraud their families and employers by engaging ineffectively with pointless busywork rather than actually contributing to society Here s the reality check Human beings can t process thousands of messages a day Good news Most email does not deserve your attention You will not have to act on all of the messages you receive each day Saying I have too many pieces of email is admitting you have poor skills at prioritizing Shut up and deal we re all faced with the same or worse email and spam barrage If you can t deal with your avalanche of email then you and your system are outdated and broken Upgrade dinosaur Will the world end or will people suffer and die if you don t handle all your email If so why the hell are you talking to me instead of clearing your inbox Coping mechanisms Hire assistants Hit the delete key Go read Lifehacker Streamline your system Get in touch with yourself Climb a mountain and meditate on what s truly important So here s me 4000 messages daily including SPAM including mailing lists including automated notices that pass through my multiple servers hosting multiple email addresses The system I use filters that down to roughly 20 per day that MAY require a response or action They all come to the one inbox Using some Mail app plugins to triage route and deal I can handle these in under 30 minutes The rest are handled by autoresponders or are filed away through a set of rules I ve recently implemented some steps that automagically archive older stuff into a MySQL database in the most absurdly remote almost impossible chance I d need to refer

  • justin.tv and art. lebedev - davidnunez
is definitely a bigger thinker about the technology and political implications than Justin and his buddies I flipped through some of the justin tv archives and found myself transfixed it reminded me in many ways of the geek houses talked about in Microserfs watching these guys take meetings and putz around with computers all day is oddly satisfying background music Although right now it s 7AM in California and the dude is still sleeping C mon son get your day going Art Lebedev Studio is a design collective that produces a wide variety of projects physical objects toys industrial design websites graphic design blogs and print publications They caught my attention with their process section that shows examples of their creative process every day and also their different info visualizations of their body of work see this bar graph for example I am really digging the idea of participating in something like this Working alone is fine for some things but getting together w a group of smart creative people to just crank out interesting work either for clients or just on spec is kind of an intriguing fantasy I think a collective is different than just a design studio

  • Wired News: The Age of Cheap, Plastic Robots - davidnunez
a concert hall to watch machines perform Maid robots roomba scooba et al With their reluctant acceptance of hacking irobot has become an implicit supporter of robotic machine art see Make Roomba serial hack page How else can we hack our modern appliances to make them do things they should not be doing When will we be able to buy an appliance blank from the store and customize it to do exactly what we need in our own homes Robot Toys robot dogs aibo and the too many to count variants what is the Lego of robotics and Mindstorms doesn t count it s too expensive and too constrained think tinkertoy non proprietary components When will robot pets breed I disagree with Wired s definition of robot below I would argue that a vast majority of robots don t usually replicate complicated behaviors of human beings They just perform rote mechanics altering their behavior in response to inputs from their environment more like bugs than simians Wired News The Age of Cheap Plastic Robots To be fair these aren t all robots in the scientific sense of a machine designed to replicate the complicated behaviors of human beings but rather
