    them A performance of Turning Points will take place on February 4th 2017 in Winchester Cathedral with the Waynflete Singers Southampton University Symphony Orchestra and the musicians of the Hampshire County Youth Service Last month I recorded my Piano Concerto in C with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Gavin Sutherland Keep an eye on this page for news of the broadcast date On BBC4 on Friday March 4th time to be confirmed I ll be presenting a compilation of archive film of great pianists including Benno Moiseiwitsch Myra Hess Artur Rubinstein Radu Lupu Murray Peraiha Perfect Pianists it s called I filmed the links at the Cobbe Collection at Hatchlands so you ll hear me playing Chopin on Chopin s own Pleyel I m currently working on Sterndale Bennett s Piano Concerto in F minor Number Four for a performance on March 5th in Orpington see my WSB page I performed this forty years ago in Graz when I was a student at the RAM and in this Bicentenary Year I jumped at the chance to try it again to test out some of the ideas about WSB performance that I ve developed since then I m very grateful to Raymond Lewis and his Orpington Symphony Orchestra for exploring my ideas with such enthusiasm And I m putting together the script for the first outing of Notes from the Piano Stool at the Pound in Corsham on March 19th I m including some pieces that no one else plays one s by Elgar and another s by Walton believe it or not And I shall be telling the unvarnished truth about Jon Vickers and the Tweed Jacket Sir Peter Pears and the Power of Suggestion and how I rode my motorbike up the A12 with a harp strapped to

    has enjoyed long standing partnerships with Ernst Kovacic especially notable is their broadcast of the Schumann violin sonatas on Clara Schumann s own piano Sir John Tomlinson and the late Philip Langridge In April this year he embarks on an ambitious Sullivan song project for Chandos working with Mary Bevan Ben Johnson Ashley Riches Besides this work on the modern piano David Owen Norris is an acknowledged expert on early pianos His discovery that the World s First Piano Concertos were written around 1770 in London for the tiny square piano led to a complete reconsideration of that instrument with an epoch making recording and concerto tours of Britain Europe and America His current early piano recording projects range from Mozart to Mendelssohn Sterndale Bennett and Brahms Norris is a familiar face on music television His analysis of Jerusalem in the Prince of Wales s programme on Sir Hubert Parry sent critics into raptures and his Chord of the Week and Inside the Score features have helped make BBC2 s PromsExtra one of the most watched classical music programmes in the world His popular Radio 4 Playlist series is often repeated and on Radio 3 his contributions to Building a Library are keenly relished to judge by the flurries on Twitter Norris has a long history with Radio 3 which discovered him as a young artist in his first few years as a solo performer he made over two hundred broadcasts For several years round 1990 he had his own weekly show The Works still fondly remembered and through the middle years of that decade he was one of the presenters of In Tune David Owen Norris s rise as a composer is more recent Audiences have been discovering his music through a series of major works the oratorio Prayerbook

    Contact STERNE was THE MAN Music Morals After the premiere of STERNE was THE MAN the Church Times wrote The keyboardist and composer Radio 3 celebrity polymath and piano virtuoso David Owen Norris and the Georgian writer and cleric Laurence Sterne go well together fond of everything 17th and 18th century Norris sometimes one feels should don peruke and breeches to go about his business His is the world of Hooke or Locke possibly of Voltaire He is as culturally travelled as the author of the fictionalised travelogue A Sentimental Journey or as any who made the Grand Tour bizarre were it not so clever and daring centred on a complete declamation of Sterne s celebrated 1764 Paris sermon The world première played to a packed Minster choir Indeed uplifted by a beautifully drilled cohesive quadripartite children s choir and resplendent tenor soloist Mark Wilde STERNE was THE MAN was bewitching a great event huge fun to be at See the film here At the bottom of the right hand column The piece commissioned by the Laurence Sterne Trust as part of its Voice from the Pulpit project presents Sterne s last sermon The Case of Hezekiah the Messengers which grapples with the moral problem of doing the right thing for the wrong reason Sterne was a non residentiary canon of York Minster where his uncle was the Archbishop During his lifetime Sterne s sermons were as famous as his novels and the Trust s commission is intended to draw attention to a neglected literary form The piece ends with a setting of the epitaph on Sterne s gravestone now in the porch of Coxwold church The title is taken from the couplet STERNE was THE MAN who with gigantic stride Mowed down luxuriant follies far and wide The piece
