first hand witness whose voice is a first hand narrative account This is a common circumstance today and frequently creates the disparity we find between online published statements and the hard light of day reality of the Ocean community White Sharks engage in live birth and generally are thought to have a gestation period which ranges between twelve and eighteen mos They are thought to give birth to between 2 and 14 pups per cycle Pups range in size between 3 and 5 feet depending on the age size of the Mother and number of young she bears through gestation They are born ready to engage as predators and many believe adult females intentionally give birth in places which present the least environmental threat to their young Some call these places proving grounds where the young can stay near shore frequently in shallow waters feeding on smaller fish and marine life before moving out into deeper waters in search of fatty and higher calorie prey before eventually adding larger mammals and pinnipeds to their diet as they reach maturity Make no mistake about this It is an old wives tale that shark s don t like humans in terms of being food source We as a species are apex predators but we are made of meat and some of us have sufficiently high fat content in our body mass index to fit quite nicely into the White Shark s diet plans White sharks predate their own species So it is not logical to believe they will not predate a human Plus our behavior in many ocean activities frequently creates the appearance of taunting or teasing the shark Think about how we are with a domestic cat or dog of our own when they swat at us and or romp Keep in mind that as a species we are traditionally not menu items because we are land inhabitants However more people than ever in our history are in the Ocean today Things are changing Right now a fairly large number of young whites and other sharks are in the area To me it looks like a couple breeding cycles worth of whites from what I am seeing based on sizes Due to our hot water event a large volume of normally tropical fish are near shore off the California Coast Couple that with the El Nino Southern Oscillation we are in and this condition of high and exceptionally large biomass increase could be in place for some time Simply put the Ocean is quite alive and the sharks are an integral part of that cycle So these young whites will not need to transition offshore into deeper waters In fact as the Fall migration engages we could see greater frequency of larger migratory whites near shore as well I have experienced white sharks in the 12 18 foot range multiple times when holding the camera in dawn s light It is always pretty interesting and not as alarming as it may

place on this blue marble where I have explored that has not left it s mark on me or left a portion of it s psychic presence upon my self This after all is what life is about relating That two way street thing creates a hook to the heart Maybe it is a Hawaiian thing that acknowledgement and understanding of a ina I do not know really There have been certain things on my heart for many years for Bali I have long been aware of the high number of drownings which occur in Indonesia and Bali in particular It seems that every time there is a big swell holiday or week end ceremony people pass away in the ocean I had been thinking about this for a long time I am sure many have The Aussie and US surfer waterman lifeguard culture has long been coming to the island and we all think similarly when it comes to ocean safety We are an Ohana You never want to lose family Wayan Gede Suardana is a lifeguard at Kuta He sent my wife a note the other day and said that they have a Surf Club that trains at Lebih Beach here on E Bali and that we should come to workout I went And there it was One of the best answers to public ocean safety Why best Because it is a culturally led answer As I watched the guys and one little girl training in similar drills to our own lifesaving programs I saw so many similarities in attitude that I found myself constantly laughing out of the strong sense of familiarity and kinsmanship it bestowed Turns out the Lebih Surf Club has been in existence for 3 mos Their first competition is against Java in 2

a huge amount of resources yet creates a tableau that allows for a connectedness to occur for Humanity which confers a lot of pleasure joy education and diverse other benefits As we taxied out into the darkness I held the little Samsung NX1 in my hand along with a suction cup lens skirt for shooting through windows without reflection In no time the pleasure of acceleration had us rocketing into the night sky above the warm velvet darkness of the Pacific Oddly enough fourteen hours passed rapidly and we woke to find ourselves descending at dawn s first light into Taipei This image is the entrance hall at the Taipei airport attached This is what people see as they pass through Taipei security I am shooting from above the very typical western themed fashion mall type facility The funny thing to me about it is that the imagery you see put up in the large translight displays is an Americanized version of Western Eu fashion Very Cosmo Vogue This juxtaposition of mall surreality with Chinese security and the highly polished facade said a lot to me Wish I could have had more time to shoot Airport security is VERY different there and in Bali as well Much less obvious You can locate all manner of embedded staff quietly observing Cams everywhere too if you know where to look It contrasts strongly with the US where security is far heavier handed and more obtrusive in every way The oversight is subtle in Taipei As we passed through Customs on Bali my wife got pulled for additional screening She brings seaglass and some surfboard resin waste for her upcycled jewelry program with her along with as many gifts as we can carry for her staff and our friends here As the agent was going through all of her stuff another rather inconspicuous guy sidled up to me and began a conversation He actually was the security lead but you would need to know that In a highly skilled manner he walked me through all of the basic intelligence questions and I told him what he needed to know At the end of it he quietly looked at the customs agent who was questioning Donna and the customs session ended they welcomed us both to Bali and we were on our way to the greeting area outside Bali has really upped it s game at the airport New facility The entry hall is massive with high ceilings and AC The old chalked x system which marked tourists for search with a white x on their baggage and a tout bribe is now gone Another big change is that tourists from countries with favored Nation status no longer need pay the approx 35 00 US visa entry fee The US is on that list along with Australia and a few others There is some more info here at Bali com This is what Bali looked like the last time we were here A happy
