on his 8 6 Hobie stinger Quad The boys were short boarding their friend was body boarding A few other people were scattered on the point Pretty amazing that Chuck could even stand having just completed what I knew from personal experience to be an incredible marathon out to Cortes He had taken an 11 foot SUP to the wave Chuck is a tripper An elite athlete in so many sports that it is sort of mind blowing He is one of my favorite subjects due to his savvy and yet easy going nature We have spent some amazing times together around the world Here we were again scoring within eyeshot of my house A few hours later we grabbed a late breakfast at Cajun Kitchen in Downtown Ventura and after headed immediately South in what had become a bluebird 75 degree Santa Ana day A check of an infrequently surfed mysto spot saw it vacant and somewhat fickle at 3 4 feet Before I knew it the boys had scrambled down the cliff and I struggled to catch up as loading a water housing and getting into my 5 mil wetsuit takes a little time This particular wave washes up a cliff and sends a backwash wave immediately out to sea which sweeps sideways across the next incoming blue sparkler It is a high degree of difficulty wave to surf Yet Chuck was somehow managing to stay astride his SUP board I am sure he was the first to ride it on that sort of craft Hmm I pondered as I slipped over the boulders and out through the shore pound two firsts for Chuck in 24 hours Cortes here It is complex pioneering a new sport SUP is so young that it has not yet found stasis amongst the ocean going community Many people hate the big boards In similar fashion to what occurred with the advent of the birth of modern longboarding there is extreme resistance and punishment aimed at its proponents But people like Chuck are rare in any sport He is so level so polite He reminds me a lot of Garrett MacNamara in his exercise of restraint when SUP surfing a break As senior watermen they have it down and are diametrically opposite of the more novice surfers who use the board s superior paddling power to dominate a break We picked off a few good ones surfing alone for an hour and a half before Fred Viela and Jake Kelley showed up There not really being room for all of us we opted to reliquish the wave to them as we had already gotten a good turn I grabbed a couple images of the two before we left I like the fact that Fred and I always seem to be in synch I was stoked to get an image of him at his home break As the day waxed long and afternoon waned we all found ourselves at another seldom surfed fickle spot

o dark thirty and swam Backside as the tide dropped after seeing some of the prettiest Queen in a while go off with a light crowd post dawn The Backside swim was hilarious as we broke two boards bodysurfed got slammed spit out of barrels went over the falls and generally just had a great time being watermen The joke level was high and it was often difficult to keep my head above water as I laughed seeing Larry get pitched into mid air sans board in a body launch or Lars sliding into the barrel since he broke a board and opted to bodysurf sans fins We would be sitting out at the end of the rip and one of the boys would intone Surfers in the rip throw away your board and wave your arms someone will be along to help you presently The guys are lifeguards Then we would reposition and 1000 tons of solid blue North Pacific swell would rear up and a spinning emerald green slab would beckon and challenge us to do something while the others taunted and or encouraged the person in the saddle At the end of the swell as I sat in the office processing what was a best case scenario for combination of swell and weather and sand position I watched the Pipe Masters go down in flawless 4 6 foot ultra clean conditions In fact it was VERY similar to here Because by the time the swell dropped and weather moved away it was an 8 of 10 possible on the scale of swell and weather for Hawaii What I saw as I processed these images below which are a small segment of the 120 image final file blew my mind A lot of the guys I know were having the performance showcase of a lifetime in a format designed by Kelly Slater that is incredibly innovative and performance encouraging as it downplays the hassle for wave factor that occurs in most competitive formats So as it turned out for Swell 2 the true and only real history was made in small surf not large Not to take away from the big wave events that did go down but the real story occurred at Pipeline and at some other spots in California that maybe only you and a few friends knew to be at because well you just know when your spot is going to deliver Because you are a surfer And we all now watch to see what the Earth will deliver having had a couple dress rehearsals I find myself sort of holding my breath as I believe we could see something big But that IS why they call it weather whether You have to watch it then be there My hope is that people are responsible and that no one does anything for the camera but because they are surfers and that is what we do Here is the blog of Hobie waterman Chuck Patterson who

  • Pursuing Happy
so people continue to fight over the use of a cemetery Legally that is exactly what it still is People s families and the History of Ventura are buried there No park for you but here have this cemetery The dead won t mind After all they are dead The act violates all manner of State and Federal codes as well as the basic conventions of humanity in every culture of the earth To make matters even more onerous one James Sumner a Medal of Honor holder is also interred there Ventura just wanted a park Parks are happy places Cemeteries are about something else The bodies lie there still Understand Goal of Governance Now don t get me wrong Politics are dirty business and politicians seldom are leaders of any real sort They typically only follow the money trail So why expect Ventura to be different Because Venturans live there And for that reason this tract of Coastal Land could possibly be one of the most vital assets in California But only if Venturans determine the direction and application of Law Civil Liberty and Development We must pursue Happiness We must seek it out architect it and make it work for our future generations There is smart growth in that Anything less is just demise As the Occupy Movement and crime in high places struggle together for control the only real chance for happiness is for the community to assume control of it s destiny and in doing so be allowed the opportunity to pursue liberty and happiness It is why I will not expatriate much as I love the peace that exists elsewhere in the world It is why I am and remain an American That is my choice I am not paid to be here I want to be here Want to see a happy future for your children Occupy your town Take it back from those who are there to milk it for personal gain You and I must do this There is no one else with that responsibility who will do it for us I hope things change yes But regardless of who is in a City Govt position we all have an investment in our Communities and must believe it to be worth all of the struggle to restore and must understand that eventually the townships of America will be occupied by the Citizens and not prurient interests hiding behind false flags Icon of Ventura Justice Judge McGrath s home Seems like a prudent thing to me the pursuit of happiness For everyone It is why our founders wrote it into the Law My son Josh produced this A young man who is an idealist rooted in the realism of our National Socio Political condition A Venturan No Substitute He gets it So should we Love your family Cherish your Community Occupy Take your town back Make it YOUR homeland You restore our Country by doing so That is an honorable thing Light Fantastic Happiness Posted in Blog Love Does Winning 26 Responses to Pursuing Happy Carla Bonney says November 5 2011 at 10 48 am Thanks for all your continued efforts in our City through your courageous words and unbelievable photographs Reply admin says November 5 2011 at 11 24 am Carla I have watched you bravely soldier on at your own risk and personal expense for the love of this Community It is an honor to know you Thank you for everything that you have done and all that you have tolerated for Ventura and our future Reply michele says November 5 2011 at 11 40 am Thankyou Sat Nam Reply Sean Davey says November 5 2011 at 3 56 pm I absolutely LOVE your community spirit David I wish everyone had such passion for their own communities Aloha Sean Reply stephen Ryan says November 5 2011 at 11 27 pm We have the same problems here in upstate Ny where our city school district 65million dollar budget just got a 5 9 increase when will it stop government riding the backs of their tax payers Time to close down the gravy train folks Oh yea it is the same with people from outside our community That have been elected by slim margins and have hijacked our school board their dirty tricks continue so join the club and we will throw the people out next time Reply Evie says November 5 2011 at 11 58 pm Thank you for sharing your perceptions of what is happening to our city of Ventura You lay it all out no stone unturned Yes it s time for change We need to take back our city Reply Joy says November 6 2011 at 12 02 am Thank you BOTH David and Carla Excellent Reply Roger Muir says November 6 2011 at 12 08 am Excellent observation There seems to be a lack of genuine concern for our community and a growing demand for happiness to be provided by the government at ALL levels of government Sad Reply Tony Dolz says November 6 2011 at 2 59 am David both your words and your beautiful pictures are poetic symbols of the love that we have for our United States and very close to our hearts the love we feel for our community and friends in Ventura I share your optimism and pray that we will see change The change that I hope for is limited small government that is fiscally responsible and minimally instrusive The role of government is not to give us anything as it invariable means taking from some to give to others the role of government is to protect our Natural Rights as described in the Declaration of Independence the Constitution and the Federalist Papers The role of government is to stay out of the way of We the People as we seek our own happiness in our own individual ways You mentioned Carla Bonney I know Carla and she is one that understand

mean spirited shenanigans of some local politicians It was so depressing that these elected officials could treat the people I live with so poorly and with such disrespect that I found myself in a cave today So while I was in there I did some Art In this blog are three images and they are called the Apocryphal Wave Series Here I will save you the trouble apocryphal əˈpäkrəfəl adjective of a story or statement of doubtful authenticity although widely circulated as being true Revelation I found these photographs buried in a 27 000 image edit file digital cave this evening and decided to paint a little bit Brightened my mood Here is a little editorial piece written by Camille Harris today She pretty accurately describes what is happening to Venturans But it is more than just my podunk little town It is all of California Yep You know what comes next As California goes Time to build something apocryphal No one will notice Everybody does it So here you go Three images They are real Okay so they may NOT be photorealistic but at least someone is being honest around here Proverb Seth Godin pounds a few nails into the framework of restructuring in this blog So cognitive dissonance well in hand I have crept out of the digital cave and seeing it sleeping on the hillside have tipped the first cow in the series Take your community back You live there You pay for it Your children deserve that It is how this State will return to health It is where safety health and happiness lie Mind the cow though Posted in Blog A Day at the Beach World Oceans Day 4 Responses to Apocryphal Wave Shawn Alladio says May 26 2011 at 9 31 am And life

court where it will be examined for compliance with State law first and ultimately Federal If the city is found to have violated those laws defense is very difficult as the City has in it s employ litigators also known as City Attorneys So if found to be in violation of the law the blame game comes to a halt pretty quickly as you see exactly where the buck stops The last choice is what Cities do not want to ever occur Here is why If a City Government which is an incorporated entity has been found guilty of violation of State or Federal law in the writing of and enforcement of it s municipal codes and on examination it turns out that they have been making claims on their insurance for errors and omissions the Insurance provider will generally be required to cancel that Corporation s policy as legally as you cannot insure crime Why was it a crime Because the City has in house legal counsel They know the law This demonstrates intent Then as the corporate structure evaporates the officers of that city which wrote the municipal code become potentially individually liable for crime and in turn are open to civil litigation for the damage wrought by that code What can occur as now the City has in effect killed its ability to govern is that the duty of Governance may be turned over to the county What this does is completely eliminate a layer of government and expense to taxpayers This is not as implausible or positive as it appears to be at first Fiscal viability of an entity is based on the simple law of cause and effect Public inability to pay for Government creates pressure on Government to survive If that Government collapses the obligation to Govern goes to the next highest authority With a City collapsing the burden of governance can fall on the County This has been seen lately So the fiscal system is intertwined The public must thrive for Government to exist If it falters and the cost of Governance stays rigid it all collapses in on itself eventually Ventura is in trouble financially because California is in trouble and State budget funded income streams are fast disappearing What the disappearance of State and in some cases Federal funds does is place extreme pressure on the City to survive So the City makes fiscal choices based on increasing income And Ventura has made some possibly poor legal and business choices as Government typically does not run their business according to benefit being equal to or in excess of cost This is due to the historic existence of external capitalization via State and Federal funding and tax revenues etc Need I elaborate Time for my town to do something It starts with me I hate battle Someone always has to die But I have little choice in this one That makes me angry It may do the same to you as well

  • Hybrid Vigor
term is reserved for describing the increased performance of a species But in Ventura California we have been seeing our fair share of the above described noun more in the form of a verb Verbs denote action When a person and in turn a community becomes insular the processes of growth cease Of course growth has many forms But the one we all ought to be after is sustainable personal and community growth This sort provides a stable platform that better ensures an economic social and even spiritual future for a community Several years ago I noticed a change in Ventura and I believe it may be in response to not just published media but efforts on the part of some folks not in City Hall but employed by the City Those folks with Global scope at heart began to craft a public persona for this town that communicated the unique venue for people to live in that is Ventura California I saw people begin to move here from various parts of the globe With them came new ideas tone flavor that in a short period of time began to create a cultural shift McGrath Family Farms Party Cultures have the same affect on a community as filters do on light They color them Those filters can make a community ugly or pretty productive or destructive This shift was a good one But here is the deal if my town changes from it s eco conscious art savvy community driven sense of purpose the flow of people here would shift and likely not in a good way Attractive Environment With much controversy surrounding the lack of enforcement of our Federal Immigration laws it is a quirky thing to do to argue for an influx of foreigners But here again is
