from catalysis on the pattern of analyst As I stood next to a wheelchair with reclining back which was now the principal means of conveyance for Mamie Cohen I sort of found myself laughing a bit inside Today Monday is her Birthday She is 89 years old and lives at Samarkand in Santa Barbara a beautiful and well run retirement home that offers the type of care she requires As I gazed at the woman who I have become acquainted with and affectionate for I realized that my girlfriend Donna s Grandmother had undergone quite a transformation in these past few years She looked beautiful and at peace The best I have seen her appear as if she had grown younger The image before me made me wonder but I already knew that inside Mamie had changed Her disposition was a new one to me Last week at an Art Show Luau at the Stoneworks Gallery in Ventura Donna told me how one of the dancers a muscular tatooed man had come up to her at the event and in full wardrobe said these words I know you You are Mamie Cohen s grand daughter You need to come see her more often Turns out he is one of her care givers I had not recognized him as he coaxed Michele Chapin and others into a dance on stage I had been too busy laughing as I was required to race from one thing to another in what was possibly one of the most rewarding and hectic weekends of my Photography career More on that in an upcoming series of three blog posts Donna told me that he and Mamie had taken to watching football together Now that was a shocker Mamie had been quite an Artist when she was

  • Samsung NX1: We Have Lift Off
that read as Nikon at the time and was getting published regularly using that kit coupled with a Scott Preiss water housing for what wound up being regular swims into lineups throughout California My recollections are crystal clear as is the memory of the day when I packed everything up in a big box except the Preiss housing and 650 lens and dropped it all off at a Camera Store on State St to be sold off on consignment The choices in equipment were slim and not so clear at the time I had examined and spoken with people at Nikon and Canon For about 18 mos I had studied up on the two companies and where I saw professional imaging heading and looked at what I wanted to create In the end I chose Canon These are the reasons The first is that they seemed to be both listening and interested in creation of new technology in the facilitation of my vision Canon Professional Services exhibited a greater sense of care and responsibility to it s community members while Nikon exhibited a pronounced arrogance in Nikon Professional Services Arrogance is expensive I needed service In speaking with Canon and studying I saw where they would take technology and the choice was then quite apparent Nikon had parked I needed a fast and reliable vehicle You see that is what camera systems are methods of transport to our dreams At that time there really only was one choice open to me after looking at all facets and that was Canon I steadily bought in and began to acquire more and better imaging and the tapestry of my work as a result of Canon s collaboration became quite rich and clearly facilitated me becoming one of the leaders in my field of Photography It was the perfect choice as I plied my trade in Motion Picture production News Photojournalism Surf and Nature and Commercial Agency work The imagery I and others in my field created set a new bar for Photography Here is a hilarious video about camera marketing But the very stark reality for me as a creative is that the guy in this video s dreams really were my reality in an expansive career as Canon helped me to realize my dreams and visions As I carefully unboxed the Samsung NX1 this week I thought about my last three years of study on emerging tech I had closely monitored not just the evolution of the mirrorless camera but the advent of a new era where Photographic and Cinematic systems were to merge I was struck by the magnitude of what was going on as I watched Panasonic Sony Fuji Go Pro and some others do what I had predicted revolutionize the game But it was the massive Samsung conglomerate with it s quite recent introduction of the pro level NX1 body and lenses that really stole the show in the dynamics that mattered most I was enchanted by the

  • The Intrigue of Story
Photography waves Zuri Star The Intrigue of Story Posted on August 24 2013 by David Pu u 0 Comments I get this with reasonable frequency A publication or commercial client or individual will contact me regarding doing some work for them We sit down a back and forth ensues They really like what I am doing and want work which will enhance their online presence by engaging Social Media Then the conversation inevitably takes a dark turn when they state We need this imagery to go viral The next thing that generally occurs is a discussion of the type of work they want stills motion video etc Then the conversation turns to cost expense I detail those for the different types of media and personalities involved and the story which they want to tell The next question is something along these lines You mean we have to pay for that At this point I learn that the client has someone in their circle or office that has a camera They are self producing imagery There is no story It is what it is someone hoping to use a basic and frequently good image or video composition and hope that they can get social traction with it In the Creative Community we call gaining permission to approach social traction going viral becoming sticky The reason concepts become like glue in culture is that the intrigue of the story creates a rainbow of emotional response You never will ever be anything but a Carnival barker without the light and intrigue of people and their stories Why story matters they are about people places and experiences which spark imagination and inspiration in the heart of the viewer This process invites them to transmutate and become something very powerful a participant Anything less is

the symbology of the compositional elements Earth sky eternity I had spoken to my friend and colleague West Cook earlier He was at his post running the restaurant for a Casino here in Ventura We had laughed about the dense fog and how he would be missing nothing I had been wrong obviously I even set about proving myself to be in error as I spent the two hours after our conversation creating a funny series of images just by thinking about where to be as conditions changed and what to say via the camera That image above was my final exam I had been wrong But in following the lead of Nature something special was fostered Mothered into existence as it were I just finished perusing the first 12 people in the Follow the Light Grant competition Which is a Photography grant created by colleagues family and friends of my first editor and long time friend Larry Moore who succumbed to brain Cancer in Oct 2005 at the age of 57 The same age I am today as I write this Celeste Moreaux had kindly included me in this year s group of individuals who get to look at the entrants and their work With all the changes in publishing technology and communication venues since Larry s passing some things will stay constant First among those is the ability of the photographer to think and in process actually have something worth saying Of the first 12 maybe 2 got that Not bad really 2 out of 12 But the thing is we need to understand that what we create ought to matter We need to comprehend what this means mattering How to use your ability to touch a heart and draw people along So many of us get it

storytellers That is worth something So the integrity skill and life experience of a creator matters very much We function within a socio economic system that is quite leery of the increasingly open source access to their market In a conversation with two sage colleagues in Photography today I had to point out something Basically it was this Just because surf publishing has deigned to not let you play does not mean your voice is not valid In fact it is the opposite Established fiscal entities do not necessarily WANT the broad market to know of you Because then the market will look at you and being fear based that bothers many surviving publishers whose park between the lines mentality is enforced each day by Corporate rule We laughingly refer to this mentality today as the Race to the Bottom Seth Godin nails it here This may not be in anyone s best interests I am going to illustrate in a couple quick stories I met Ed Lu at Opus Novum s Sea Space Initiative Summit at Google last year Ed is a water guy He is also a Scientist and Astronaut He had a question So did many of the amazingly talented people there The question was one of funding At the end of the two day series of derivative workshops we all sat in a circle Three people sought answers to traction based funding questions Absolutely the least educationally qualified in the room the answer to their dilemma was crystal clear to me In short this is what I said I know how you guys can solve this The answer is you No one knows who you are You operate in agencies anonymously You all simply need to tell your story Here is Dr Ed Lu telling his

vehicle to a solution I once again asked myself what I was doing being here in SF with these great and compassionate men and women A lot of people seem to think I am pretty smart In some ways maybe I am It is why I find myself invited into some rather heavy conversations which have a bearing on the survival of the planet Oh don t get me wrong the planet is not really in much danger It is mankind which is BIG difference And it is fixable Most everything is really Even death is a fix of sorts I happen to be convinced that we can do better than that And to run around screaming the sky is falling in order to get people s attention is not only irresponsible but it invokes a fear based response which is the antithesis of a Faith and Creative response which is based on Love You see fear is based on Hate Hate also known as darkness is simply the absence of sufficient light Hope is rooted in Love Love illuminates all who hold her Here is the irony Love requires you to give She is only held as a flow Grab hold too tightly and like a tourniquet the flow of life ceases All of these people were on the boat because they are fans of those quantifiers not to do anything less than to create to assist and facilitate Why was I there What am I doing Pretty simple I have no secrets really I am just a guy who insists on doing the job set before me But this is how I approach the diverse and radical things which I find myself in the midst of Here is what I believe Man is where he is due to not asking the right questions There are reasons we do this Earlier today Rob Caughlan the great Environmental thinker had said this Pollution is just a resource out of place He had said it as he spoke with one of our fellows regarding the ongoing Nuclear disaster in Japan which BOS is deeply invested in resolving It struck me It should grab everyone I believe I am where I am not because I ask the right questions but because I go to my source and commune with it I actually learned the process while in a Bible College many years ago A preacher named Norville Hayes had said it in one of my courses Everyone always makes big plans and then goes to God and asks for Him to bless them I have a better idea Why not go to God first and ask Him what the plan is Then when you get done with the conversation you have a plan that is already blessed That is what I endeavor to do So I am really not so smart I just go to the right entity partner with it spend some time and ask for the plan None of what
