  • The Collaborative Effect
pursued a work on our own Why Because it illustrates the energy of two souls in harmony while in critical pursuit of the creation of an astute statement Brian Kasbar sent this film to me by acclaimed director Tom Shadyac It came on the heels of a conversation with Shawn Alladio Ed Brenegar and some others on the subject of leadership and in particular Team Building The film is called I AM You can watch it here it is 3 26 minute segments I highly recommend it The film left me a bit unsettled after a critical view It took me about 2 minutes to figure out why Though it connects most of the dots fairly well about how we as a part of creation and universe could change things by better choices it fails and this may be by intent on the part of the film maker to elaborate on exactly how we ought to DO that make the shift Yes it alludes to Love being the way But it does not illustrate to the viewer how to connect to love aside from making the choice to connect with others and in doing so with better intentions and thought the entire Universe will shift Surge It will not Though yours may Here is why We are all designed as a part of the plan of the Grand Architect to be individual lightning rods so to speak of the Light of the World That light in fact really is Sound Some call it God I know I do By it everything was created that is Your spirit is your antenna you connect to the sound and begin to broadcast light by a choice made via your soul The film leaves out that aspect Big problem creating an equation for change

  • Respect for the Subject
still getting our probing and often intrusive job done Easy really You put SELF last For those of you who know me or my life and work very intimately you get that I have complete disdain for selfishness especially within the realm of basic Commercial Photography I truly believe what we do to be simple So if that is the case we ought never to be on stage But ALWAYS out of sight Our job is about servitude Chumash Maiden I learned something very important working in Motion Picture as a set stills photographer Always stay out of the talent s eye line Of course that is easier for me being 5 5 I dress for the background we shoot in Blimp my camera or use longer lenses if it is possible for me to stay out of the set s staging area I just follow the DP and the shooting script I do my job Document Iconize the peak moments of a scene Simple really For some people When I came into Photography and Film making I had a conversation with Editor Jeff Divine after he had given me my first cover At the time I had closed my rather high profile Company and stepped out of both Radio and Television Broadcast work having just turned down the opportunity to be a co host on a Nationally Syndicated talk show I was done being looked at So I figured what better place to hide than behind the camera Blossom Jeff knew what I was working towards I confided to him that I disliked the attention I had received from the latest cover shot and like a distressed and somewhat selfish child of a budding imaging creative I complained You know Jeff I only chose Photography because I reckoned that I could become anonymous I just wanted it to be about someone else finally and not be at the head of everything Jeff looked at me and with that soft smile of his shook his head and said It is going to be far worse than anything else before in your life David What were you thinking Well he was sort of right But just sort of I doubled down on my efforts to remain anonymous I even went into stock Photography production in signing a contract with burgeoning Commercial giant Corbis Images where I figured that surely in a stable of great names alive and dead whose work was being pushed to the fore I could just disappear But all that did was raise the bar Having been a competitive athlete and businessman I found myself just slowly one upping my colleagues And they liked that In fact I think we all shoved each other along Great names in stills and motion picture imaging People who I had read of and whose works I had admired all my life But in being around those great creatives I noticed something about them They NEVER let it be about THEM They

  • Ocean Ohana: Guardianship
and had immediately taken to each other Like brothers Turns out the man is a Scot living overseas and while my life reads like a dime store piece of fiction his ramps up into an arena that makes my own ethics in work study and adventure appear like those of a slacker Turns out that A is a water guy A former foreign military operator he told me how he had survived an open water training exercise I had grinned at the account because his solution to being left far at sea with his gear and making it back to land was brilliant His gem handed to me without fanfare was this You know the concept of Stewardship That really does not apply well today Stewardship implies that we watch over and maintain what is already here and that everything is okay and in good shape What we need and what ought to be pursued is Guardianship That is where answers to the issues really lie And he said it in his Scottish accent as we both stood barefoot cooking I have thought about that statement nonstop for a week now For the past several months I have been reading up on a rather pointed example of abused land sea and air and need to write a little piece about it that will matter The problem I am examining has been in existence for a very very long time Many have protested it Controversy has surrounded it Billions upon billions of dollars have been spent on it Nations focus on it And I must write on it The analogy of me being a teensy tiny drop of water falling and being lost in the big pool of data both accurate and false on the subject has not escaped me The question was not so much one of what to say research and observation tell us that It was how to say it A s statement both informed and woke me up Those who are a part of the Ocean tribe have a responsibility to become Guardians We either step up and do so or we become imposters who let terrible things be done to others at the expense of our Ocean and individual Nation s health and well being The world needs informed Blue Voices now more than ever It is up each one of us to determine how the future will play out I learned long ago that the saying In God s Hands is relative to our relationship with Him and that for me spending a life in the Sea leaves me uniquely informed regarding just what the statement means And I see it in the brothers and sisters of my Ocean Ohana Wisdom and Strength and Love The principles of Guardianship I travel to find light like this Imagine gliding through liquid fire Each one of us does this paddles out into the sea of life Home truly is where the heart is Posted in Blog Featured

  • Triiibes 2012. What: Is Happiness
at the terminus of a very detailed business plan s fulfillment But surfing and the Ocean were always there I was always hungry for my next ocean experience It NEVER stopped that yearning to achieve what I could not have known that one day at 42 years of age I would be paddling out on this board which really was something I made for riding large waves and not for the sort of small to medium size day at Rincon point just North of here that I would run smack into what As a professional surfer I had made my career riding shortboards In the world of professional surfing those are the craft of choice the journeyman s tool so to speak Out of all the boards I built probably 30000 of them were shortboards Maybe 1000 were big wave boards sort of built along the lines of this one I have a crystal clear memory of the moment I ran into what The interesting thing however is that the actual details of my moment of clarity of revelation which were contained in what was to be a defining wave in my life are a little bit blurry There is a reason for that But I am going to let you figure out what it is There is a little bit of cryptic me for you Now Rincon is a rather long wave We call the place Queen of the Coast This day was maybe ceiling high The swell had been pretty big for a few weeks and I had been riding this board a lot The waves were dropping off a bit and I probably normally would have chosen a shortboard to ride which would have been better suited to what I would normally do on a wave For some reason I grabbed the 7 8 gun It was an innocuous wave that I caught Nothing special about it on the surface of things Stroking into it I recall a keen sense of drive inside of me and for a period of what was only probably a minute and a half all those years in the water exhibited themselves in a very complex series of maneuvers on that wave At the end as I accelerated out of it and into the flat water off the back of the wave it hit me I had just surfed a wave not perfectly for my sport peers judge or anyone else but perfectly for me I was not really thinking per se I was doing I had just done it I had discovered my what That what was flow between the energy contained in the sea and me And in that instant I recognized that I was done with my growth in surfing I had finally caught up and run against the answer to my what It was a strange but very rewarding feeling I cannot say it was happiness it was more a sense of mastery a knowing that okay I can DO that at last I get it I did not realize it at the time but that incredibly rewarding moment was the harbinger of great change in my life Because I had located my what My goal Which I had inwardly assumed would be unreachable That is how man is wired We all need to find our what because in that we create motion and movement flow which in a essential linchpin to happiness In this same time frame as that epiphany laden moment my company was at a crossroads of growth going from factory and two stores to my business plan of five locations where which point I had planned to sell the entity off and move into something else I have never really enjoyed being a CEO or a leader I tend to be happiest pushing others along to succeed Just how I am wired I guess In the middle of all of this for a number of reasons I had made the decision to divorce my wife and change few things in my life but was torn on what to do regarding all of the business sprawl which I had created as well as how the impact of all the change would impact everyone in my life We had amassed quite a bit of stuff and along with that came a debt of responsibility to both family employees surfboard craftsmen Community and more I think of my process in discovering what to do about all of this sort of like me spazzing out In many ways I had run into a wall That wave which was such a defining moment in my life really had seeded the need for change What I was experiencing was a cessation of flow in my life I needed to again find my what One thing for sure that I was certain of happiness was far from my cluttered little world One evening a fire started in the hills here It was during a clearing wind event and I was watching from down here by the beach as the wind fanned the blaze and it began to sort of rocket through the town I was a personality on a morning radio show at the time where I did a surf report and a few other things occasionally One of those other things was live reporting on events like large swells and fires etc So I rang in to the station and we began a public service type live report on the fire Since my Ventura retail store was front row center on the fire I drove over hung up my cel telling the on air guy Rick that I would call back from the shop landline in a moment I unlocked the back door of the shop and in the light of the fire coming through the display windows I saw a guy dressed in black wearing a ski mask LOL I still see all of this in slow motion by

u 0 Comments Golden Reflections This link is to a new piece by Zuri Star called Keep Holding on It fits the New Year quite well It seems that all around us this past year there was friction In fact I found myself enmeshed in three massive battles all at the same time I did not author those I simply said no to three entities I saw as abusive of my fellow man community and Ocean Environment friction ˈfrik sh ən noun the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another a lubrication system that reduces friction the action of one surface or object rubbing against another the friction of braking conflict or animosity caused by a clash of wills temperaments or opinions a considerable amount of friction between father and son So as we close out 2010 here are a few things to lubricate the road ahead A fantastic treatise on love from the eyes of babes How to change the world completely one girl at a time The Girl Effect Beauty that matters Sent along by Fernando Ismerio A stunning high speed slow motion look at the oceans Seth Godin on 2011 Best to use

  • No Substitute
analogy for all the things in the world which may seem real and vital but are in fact mere facades Gabe is an A list model and budding actor He and I had been sort of chomping at the bit to work together Josh s project was first bite Josh Slavin Performer Songwriter Josh absolutely rocked his performance Though his real name is Joshua Pu u his performance name and alter ego is Josh Slavin He literally becomes another person while performing If I was there as his Father I would have been shocked But as his Director Co Producer and collaborator I was pretty stoked at what I saw Dafoe was amazing as always Donna Von Hoesslin styled did wardrobe and mixed our toxic cocktails Analogous props Robert Catalusci was his normal nine ball mix of happy creativity and passion as Art Director We really had a great crew Who you work with defines the quality of your life So by 2 30 am as we wrapped all of us though tired were really looking forward to seeing the final video and were still in high spirits Though Josh is my son I would never do a project and ask those busy and talented colleagues of mine to help for that reason I did it because I believed in his vision He met the bar for being a subject In the course of the night I actually realized that by the end of the video I would need to apply myself a bit to match HIS bar I like that We shot it on the Canon 5D Mark 2 and GoPro HD systems Which once again proved themselves as the future of creative film making No Substitute Imitate limit ate Settle for less Substitute infiltrate I m not impressed
