waves Zuri Star Significant Presence Posted on May 15 2012 by David Pu u 0 Comments In my morning rush to ply the pixel seas today I ran across a notable piece of reading from Seth Godin It gave me pause as I looked at the laundry list of crazily diverse imagery in front of me He writes about Hard Work on the Right Things I highly recommend it for a number of reasons Principle one being that the world at large will endeavor to convince an Artist that they have chosen poorly and what is produced will never be of any real significance It does that with good cause and to appropriate affect to weed out the insignificant Preparing for life With most vital creatives who operate in a space time continuum different from the diverse cultures that they can be found within this is rarely true in the context of a long view To illustrate here in this post is a little sampling of what was on my desktop this morning The depth of what could appear to be little reality grabs to the uninitiate will prove to be far greater as time passes I know that Which

Santa Barbara Seth Godin Shawn Alladio Sierra Partridge social change Social consciousness social sustainability surf culture surfer Surfer magazine surfing surf photography Sustainability travel ventura Wave Photography waves Zuri Star Life Channel Family Photo Album Posted on December 23 2010 by David Pu u 0 Comments The Irons Entourage Surfer Poll It was not so long ago that I shot everything on film The reasons for that are mostly archive based Film provides an analog image which can be scanned to whatever resolution and file size a client requires But then the 5D Mark 2 came along and with a parallel arrival of imaging program technology it became possible to equal and in some ways exceed the imaging potential of many films Even in motion picture 5D Mark 2 generated image I have an amazing amount of work sitting in image vis a files and huge binders My sons have both worked scanning those into my library system In process they each got a tutoring in digital post production and by contact got to see what really went on in my life The world of each artist is a LOT like a film or a TV Channel We have a storyline and plot modus Dana and Bruce Brown Seth Godin had this to say I found it very on point I consider what I will shoot carefully and pursue it by placing myself in the right timeframe and mindset to witness things that the average person viewer may not get to but really should experience Otherworldly So every once in awhile I will take a glimpse through the scanned image files which are archived in several folders Generally speaking no one will have seen these besides my sons and I So in a way they are family photos Java Here

mean Larry was a bar setter in surf photography He had shot me in my Pro Surfing career and it felt remarkable that here we were years later together and that he had become a proponent of my work So the magazine came out and Larry ran the shot postage stamp sized William laughed and tried to be encouraging Oh that is just Larry trying to motivate you Geezus William I just got kicked in the nuts This is how it works Yep that is Larry I shot this photo using a water housing made by a well known surf photographer and close friend who also happened to be a housing builder I used my wife s Minolta X700 body with a Minolta 28mm lens and RVP 50 film The water housing was hers as well Veronica was one of two female surf photographers working for Surfer magazine when I became a professional surfer Quite a ground breaker that way She was my wife friend and photographer It was a great excuse for us to travel together She rarely used the water housing Ronnie swam like a rock I knew this first hand from having pulled her to the surface before Larry called me into the office shortly thereafter and asked me to bring my housing I made the drive down to San Clemente and as I handed the housing off I could see what looked like anger on Larry s face F ing he said saying the photographer housing makers name What I asked Flame told me that the 3 8 inch thick plexiglass port that my lens looked through ruined optics and that it was the housing makers means of sabotaging his competition Fix it were his sole words of advice I did later that week taking the port to a plexiglass fabricator and having him glue 1 8 optical grade glass in place after milling away the 3 8 inch thick plex that was ruining my lens view I was still shaping boards at the time that I shot this image I have pretty much always been a board builder I started when I was 12 The board Adam is riding is one of the first ones that I built for him after he had come to me and asked if I would coach him I was shaping and building boards for a lot of pretty good surfers at the time All of them were highly motivated Adam Bobby Martinez Mary Osborne A long list actually But these are my close friends to this day The net result of Adam s commitment and our joint efforts resulted in him becoming one of the winningest amateur surfers in US history In 12 months time he won multiple regional and two National titles on both short and longboards that I built for him start to finish If anybody has won so many events in such a short time frame coming from out of nowhere so to speak I am

  • Samsung NX1: Throttling Up
new kit I anticipate some challenges but fully expect myself to be far more versatile and nimble as a professional content creator Here is a fantastic piece by another change agent in this Olympus imaging renaissance Enjoy I did especially since I will never need to travel through an airport with three pelican cases and 180 pounds of gear ever again This week a new lens arrived A Rokinon 85 mm F 1 4 full manual lens by Korean MFG Samyang It was 269 00 and features great optics and very pleasing bokeh But wait what am I doing Using a camera body with bleeding edge AF as a manual focus body Why Well in the short run the supply of lenses a pro uses which have Samsung NX mounts involves a short availability list and even at half Canon s price they still are in the 1200 each range for the most part though there ARE some exceptions More on those in upcoming posts The reason I got the 85mm is that it will translate excellently as both a fashion lens and a Cinema lens where honestly I do not even use AF And it is 269 bucks And the Samsung body utilizes a great imaging tool called programmable focus peaking which allows one to achieve razor sharp focus without the usage of AF The Samsung NX1 body has other focus assists as well in accomplishing and checking focus which is a critical issue for every high resolution sensor camera Below is an image shot on the Rokinon You can click on any image for a larger view and hit the back arrow to return to this blog text Shallow DOF and shot at 1 40 second iso 400 with Medium focus peaking green Now to the real downside of the Rokinon Close focus sucks at a 3 3 feet minimum That is death to a Cinematographer So what to do Get this The extension tube set from Neweer I regularly shoot with extension tubes What they do is bring in the field of focus to close macro range Neweer makes great stuff frequently at a fraction of the price of OEM camera manufacturers products I immediately put my set to use on both the Rokinon 85 and Samsung 16 50 Perfect range and sharpness and pretty darned good AF on the OEM Samsung lens Here is an image using the Samsung 16 50 lens with the Neweer extension tube Focal Length 50 0 mm in 35mm 77 0 mm OIS On stage 2 1 1250 sec f 7 1 ISO 400 More on lenses I own a LOT of Canon mount glass made by both Canon and Tokina My glass is carefully selected and is worth more money than I care to disclose So what the heck about that Is it time for a fire sale This is what I did after learning that adapter MFG geniuses Metabones said they could not produce a Samsung NX1 to EOS

  • My Truth
Organization or person which stands in an effort to accomplish something of merit or value must predicate it s existence on belief Some call this belief system Our Truth Recently I watched as one of the companies I am a part of had it s leadership disappear and not only jeopardize the organization but potentially engage in some actions which could cost a lot of lives and careers The person is doing what I call Flailing which is sort of like beating the air with your arms as you head for the bottom of a fall which you embarked upon when you stepped off a cliff The process of deciding how to respond to another s flailing and hurtful dangerous actions had me examining what exactly my own Truth is So I wrote it down as much to be clear to myself as I would want it to be known to my colleagues and friends I have always held that we owe this to people to be transparent in this way My Truth I know the following statement well It is a vital part of my Truth Everything which we see begins in the unseen arena of energy and the arc of Time All that exists has it s foundation in a realm that the Religious call the Spiritual So when we look on something we are seeing the physical manifestation and result of something which occurred was authored in the arc of time in a different dimension from the one in which our physical selves reside within We came from somewhere we are here we head somewhere So we have the ability to exercise what we are spirit soul and body as architects on this planet We are that capable But our intrinsic nature is to be corrupted by

surf photography Sustainability travel ventura Wave Photography waves Zuri Star Why Posted on October 19 2013 by David Pu u 0 Comments Everyone has reasons for the things they engage which by their actions define that person The sage old adage of It must work for them really does not cover the reasons why people do things that well I thought about why I do some of the things which I engage as an Artist this week It was brought into high focus for me by conversations with editors who I greatly respect in publishing and commercial ventures It made me think about why I shoot what I do especially the Ocean stuff I mean the world does not need another perfect glimpse of my watery world So why do it why swim with a camera every chance I get The flippant answer would be Because I can But that one is far from accurate I am very good at what I do Possibly one of the best I have ever seen That is not why I am not doing it to be labeled as the best I really could care less about labels being applied to my work by

  • Breathless
law in this Country Because what does one do when Governance becomes Rule and Tyranny descends The Veterans once again led the way In defiance of a Federal shutdown of the Vets Memorial by the Executive Branch the people of the US occupied it Here is some coverage of what has been going on which Factory Media has declined to air Freedom was never free While the black hearted nature of many in leadership depresses me the courage of these Veterans and their families and our heavily downtrodden working class is indicative of strength and hope I had thought on what the American Flag means to many recently and recognized especially watching very educated people fall willingly into partisan thinking once more that maybe she should be flown upside down for now Those of you with Military or nautical backgrounds will know what that means I ran across this piece by Nahko Bear It is called My Country One man s take on the land he loves I hope all the Artists and Musicians pick up their tools and get to work Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are inalienable rights Best to recognize when they disappear that someone has sold them and in process you Did you know that an inalienable right is one given by God Maybe think about that Pursuit of Happiness Posted in Blog Featured Essence Why 3 Responses to Breathless Stan Frantz says October 14 2013 at 9 48 am You have any proof of this One really had to look no further than see the barricades put up under order of the Executive Branch at the Veteran s Memorial on the Beltway in DC for an illustration of what we as a people have allowed to rule over us The President had it locked down That was expensive And I am not speaking merely of the likely 1000 fold increase in daily expense to fence and guard the Memorial but of the complete loss of respect for the rule of law in this Country Ergo your entire premise is base on a fallacy Not to mention lies One person and one person only is responsible for the shut down of the Federal Government Everything that happens during that shutdown is therefore his fault And that man s name is John Boehner who deliberately refused to allow a vote on a continuing resolution to keep the government open In that act defying the democratic principles this country is based on That is not just tyranny of the minority it is treason Your publishing this blog and your posts on Facebook make you an enabler of the IMHO treasonous Tea Party faction of the Republican party who were seen rejoicing after the government shutdown They had gotten what they had planned to do for a long time and were quite open about their glee in achieving it including everything that happened as a result national parks and memorials included Then in the most hideous display
